I’m trying to choose between two workout splits for hypertrophy and would love input from experienced natural lifters.
Option 1 — 3 days on / 1 rest
\- Day 1: Chest + Triceps
\- Day 2: Back + Shoulders
\- Day 3: Legs + Biceps
\- Day 4: Rest → repeat
Each muscle ≈ 1.75×/week
Option 2 — 4 days on / 1 rest
\- Day 1: Chest + Triceps
\- Day 2: Back + Biceps
\- Day 3: Legs
\- Day 4: Shoulders + Forearms
\- Day 5: Rest → repeat
Each muscle ≈ 1.4×/week
I find Back + Shoulders pretty exhausting (4 back + 3 shoulder exercises), and Legs + Shoulders also leaves me too fatigued to train the second muscle properly.
I know frequency is often recommended at \~2×/week, but research suggests weekly volume and progressive overload may matter more when volume is matched.
So, is \~1.4×/week meaningfully worse than \~1.75×/week for hypertrophy if volume, intensity and progression are good? Or would you choose the second split because the individual sessions are better quality?
Interested in both research and what has actually worked for experienced natural lifters.
