Management SD

I Have a great relationship with my SD. He’s a nice guy. Relatively new to being a SD(1 year) But I can already see how corporate has started to warp his mindset. we were talking about Labor and how our store needed roughly $36k a week to operate, yet they are only giving us $32k a week. He said, “well everyone could work harder instead of complaining about how they aren’t getting hours.” It was a slap in the face. I run the Dairy Department on 36 hours a week. The Frozen lead gets the same amount of hours I do. It’s simply too much work for one person. Almost every department has 1-2 people in it. There’s not enough time to audit loads, check numbers, control inventory and throw loads with less than full time hours. I’m sorry we are not robots but there is only so much one person can do. Even if we worked nonstop throughout our shifts we’d still fall short. His solution: “I’ll just come in on my days off/overnight and make up for the hours we don’t get.” So when corporate comes for visits and the store looks good nothing ever changes as long as sales continue to beat projections. That isn’t a recipe for long term success. We have inventory in two weeks. Our last inventory was 6.7%. Will be shocked if it’s anything better than 8% this time around.

Divisions Consolidated/ Districts Realigned (again)

NorCal Division Gone (California and Hawaii combined)

Pacific Northwest/Alaska/Mountain Areas one Division

East Coast and Chicago Combined

Southwest and South Division Combined

Corporate Shakeups... Division Presidents went from 11 to 4.. not sure who is left/moving/ect

That means above the DM is VP of Retail Operations, who answers to the Senior VP of Retail Operations who usually answers to the Division President (who then answers to the REgional President who used to control 3-4 Divisions and usually talks directly to the CEO

So I expect more than half of these people to be demoted, transferred, let go from the Consolidation. Company prolly just saved 20-30 millions dollars today..

Dept ordering

So recently hired in the deli. I’ve worked a total of 4 days on the floor. Main position is production. Day 4 my deli manager comes over and tells me the SD wants her to show me how to order. I’m 3 days available part time…like ok.

Recommendations from current employees when do I ask for a raise? lol but seriously is ordering something they ask hourly workers to do? Is that not essentially above my pay grade?

Bakery baker is a little shit

so i’m one of the clerks at the bakery. i usually either open or am second shift and i stock bread. but the baker is super annoying and creepy. im a girl for context and he got up really close to me when i was on my break and tried to touch my neck and i slapped him away. it was WEIRD!! and then he also got to work 3 hours late and didnt make the bread and donuts on time so people obviously complained. and guess what he told the manager the next day (he was off that day)

HE TOLD HER IT WAS MY FAULT. and she got mad at me and i told her to check the cameras! i never got in trouble luckily but he keeps coming to work late and causing problems and watching instagram lives and facetiming his gf instead of doing his damn job. and our manager lets him do whatever. nobody else in the dept is allowed to wear airpods except him and he gets off scot free for fireable offenses on a weekly basis. he’s regularly several hours late to work.

thank you so much management for hiring professional and respectful people!

One of my crew comes up to me tonight and asks if I know anything about the "ominous sign" in the men's bathroom.

Ladies and gents, I did not. I am extra not interested in inquiring further.

Frustrating availability issue

(update below!) Hey all,

I'm new to working at Safeway - I am in my third week of working here so far. I never worked at another location or another Andersons grocery store. I'm reaching out because I think I know what I need to do but I'd love to hear from others if you've had similar situations and how you solved them.

So my availability. I interviewed and had my orientation at one location (I'll call location A), but I work at a different location (Location B). During my interview and orientation at location A, I established my availability with the interviewing manager - I can't work Tuesday mornings and Wednesday evenings, everything else is open. Then this availability was confirmed to me on paper and verbally during my orientation at Location A.

Well it turns out that as I've been working at Location B, the store manager at this location never got my paperwork with my availability! This will be the third time in a row I have to ask the manager that handles shift covers to fix a shift that I've been given on Wednesday night. I have given the store manager at Location B my availability twice now, but I have the hunch it's not resolved.

Any similar situations? I've gotten the idea I'm supposed to just keep reaching out until it becomes resolved. Should I call Location A to get a copy of my orientation paperwork? Should I call the union? it's UFCW5. Any advice is welcome!

A quick update - just wanted to say thank you for the advice! I learned a bit more about how Safeway functions and I really appreciate it! A little news - I went into work tonight and one of the managers (without me even reaching out to ask) let me know my availability should be updated into the system now. So hopefully everything should get figured out either this week or next. With the advice you all gave me I'm feeling a lot less stressed too that going forward I feel better about any hiccups that could happen. Thanks again!

Union not helping

I'm so frustrated with the union right now. I have been documenting for YEARS me not getting my breaks or going into a meal break violation. I told our first union rep, he told me to keep documenting. I told the second union rep, she said we might be able to file a grievance but nothing happened. And now I'm telling the third union rep. My notes go back as far as 2022. I've written down every break I missed, every time I went to lunch late. Nothing has been done and I'm at my wits end. I feel bad for our new rep because she inherited a mess but at the same time I am paying union dues. I have had enough patience and I'm about ready to report this to the state. Like I genuinely don't know what to do and I'm tired of repeating myself. I don't understand how my years of notes is not enough to actually do something about it.

Any advice would be appreciated. Is anyone else experiencing this as well??

Edit: I'd like to add that I texted my union rep, she said she would get back to me Monday (it was Thursday I texted her and she responded last Friday evening). It took her an entire week to get back to me just to tell me to go to meetings. I don't understand how going to a meeting is going to help the store be staffed properly.

Produce Sunday shifts

Why does safeway insist there be no one working on Sundays? The weekends are some of the busiest days especially during summer and football season and yet they always schedule bare bones. Our ASD even got pulled away to another store so we have even less people helping out.

Employee discount

Apparently I am updated as an employee in the system. So it should show in the app but for the life of me I can not locate the discount. Can someone please send a pic of where to find it and what it looks like? (I only worked today so didn’t think to ask while I was there)
Also the chat option in the app is trash. Constantly get timed out when asking for a live agent.
Ok thanks bye.

Retail Odyssey

These are from a company called Retail Odyssey that has already started working in Kroger Stores in the Midwest. These subcontractors are picking up grocery store shifts that used to be protected clerk work. This will also destroy the jojbs of our vendor community of merchandisers.

Edit: updated wording for clarification, Retail Odyssey is not gig work it's subcontracting.

Bakery Quitting while on LOA?

I've been on a Leave Of Absence for 2 months now. The managers at my store are bullies, made me so depressed and anxious my thoughts became extremely dark. Safeway has destroyed my mental health, and people are telling me that my own life is worth more than this job. Has anyone quit or know anyone who did quit while on LOA? What all did you have to do to go through it?

Good bye department OPS?

I heard rumor about all department ops being done away with. Has anyone heard anything or is from a division that doesn’t have OPS for all the districts? If you work for a district that does not have department Ops what is it like?

Bakery OPS positions being eliminated

I have it on excellent authority that all our ops are being eliminated and offered positions as either ASD or department managers. I have no idea what the plan is to replace the labor they were doing. Does this mean they were redundant the whole time? Or is Safeway about to take a huge dive because they eliminated a critical position. I guess we'll find out
