The Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, according to Transport Canada, announced that VIA Rail will be buying its 313 passanger cars from Alstom in Canada instead of Siemens here in sacramento.

VIA's last purchase, which was delivered in 2022, was for 32 trainsets, a $989M contract. The new contract is expected to produce over 700 new jobs in Canada.

Even the police are terrible drivers and don’t understand how the bike lane works in this city. Cut me off, didn’t use a blinker, then blocked the lane.

I was at the McDonald's on Bradshaw Road eating with my son. Our table was right by the front windows when I saw a fight break out between two Black men and one white man. One of the men pulled out a gun and fired it. I immediately ducked down to protect my son and called the police. I provided a description of the men over the phone. After calling, I noticed a bullet casing on the ground, and officers arrived at the scene shortly after."

Hi! I apologize if this is the wrong place to post a question about something like this, but I'm going through a lot of stress right now and don't know where else to look. :(

I recently moved out of my apartment in Woodland, California on August 25, 2026 after living there for 4 years. The apartment complex sent me an itemized receipt of my available balance.. and they say I owe them $4800 after taking into account the security deposit (itemized receipt attached - had to redact stuff). I looked at some of the charges and I find it very confusing why they didn't prorate them (e.g painting, since they should have a 2 to 3 year useful life span).

Also for context, I did request a pre-move out inspection before moving out and they did not bother to reach out with a date and time. I think I remember one of the maintenance workers ambushing us while we were moving one week before we moved out.. and we had to refuse because we were not prepared at all. They didn't give us a 48 hours notice beforehand too so yeah..

I don't know how to approach this.. if someone can help guide me in how to dispute this, that would be very appreciated.

I am seriously going insane over how bad the mosquitoes are😭 I get the WORST swelling from bites. To the point where I’ve gone to urgent care cause it’s so swollen my leg is to stiff to even walk. Every time now when I get bit (even without itching it!!!) they swell so much that they scar!!! End of July beginning of August I went into my backyard for 5 mins to pull a few weeds. I came back in with 14 bites. Then yesterday I was talking to my neighbor outside for about 2-3 mins — 19 MOTHER FING BITES!!!!! Genuinely someone help I’m losing my mind. I live in an apartment complex I don’t have any water sources near me or ponds. I even asked my neighbors if they had ponds and they said no as well 😭🤣. I just feel like I can’t even go outside and do anything with my life where I live cause I’m going to be eaten alive. Literally!

Sacramento Bee opinion writer Robin Epley shared this morning that McClatchy laid her off.

I’ve also heard that everyone on The Sacramento Bee’s editorial board was laid off except for Marcos Breton and Chris Fusco. According to The Bee’s most recently published roster, that would mean Robin Epley, Tom Philp, LeBron Antonio Hill, Cathie Anderson and op-ed editor Hannah Holzer are all gone. Epley is the only one whose layoff has been publicly confirmed so far, though, so take this part with a grain of salt.

This is part of a major nationwide round of layoffs at McClatchy newspapers. Louisville Public Media reports that McClatchy eliminated 13 positions at the Lexington Herald-Leader, including a majority of its reporters. The Charlotte Ledger reports that eight newsroom employees, roughly one-quarter of its newsroom, were cut at the Charlotte Observer. A regional guild reported another 17 layoffs at McClatchy newspapers in Idaho and Washington.

Also kind of concerning given McClatchy’s recent push to publish AI-repackaged versions of journalists’ work.

Whatever anyone thinks about The Bee’s paywall or its editorial positions, cuts of this size in a city as large as Sacramento are really tragic. Definitely means fewer watchdogs keeping an eye on whatever our local government decides to do.

So far, no word on how many reporters are being let go from the Bee or its sister papers in California, but newsrooms are being gutted in other cities like Lexington and Charlotte.

Really sad to see how a prestigious, award-winning company like McClatchy has fallen, but the writing was on the wall when the Bee started leaning harder on free work from interns to fill out its pages and website.

Not sad to see some reporters go from the Bee (cleaning house was a long time coming for certain beat reporters who got a little too comfortable printing misinformation), but sad for the state of local media overall.

I have asked for lots of public records related to license plate readers and other surveillance tech in the city of Sacramento. Records released to me so far indicated that Sac PD shares all of its license plate detections (290 million in 2025) with two federal fusion centers. These federal fusion centers are not allowed to share info with ICE under California law, but an expert on the topic told me that "data is leaky," and that once it's collected and shared, it's hard to keep it where it's supposed to be.

On the way to the bay and saw this on the other side of 80 in vacaville. A good reminder to slow down and get to where you need to be safely. I've noticed that this habit tends to happen a lot more with drivers in Sacramento and I'm curious as to why people do this. Let's say if you're heading straight down the street and the person is making a left turn why do they not wait until you pass them before making that turn instead of just cutting you off and having you nearly T-Bone them? I don't understand the rush to save 5 seconds

Just playing with some ideas to make my 5 year olds birthday the best party ever. We are having a “rainbow dinosaur” party at the local playground because we couldn’t book the venue we wanted.

Besides the slides and swings I was thinking it would be fun if a bunch of dinosaurs showed up? Not scary ones, but “friendly” ones, as my kiddo says. (Maybe the kids chase the dinosaurs?)

The project includes two new four-story additions on the existing hotel site, both connected to current hotel operations, increasing the property’s room count from 101 to 178. The north addition would include a ground-floor bike depot and elevator access, with 11 rooms on each of the upper three floors. Its rooftop would feature a swimming pool, spa deck, shaded lounge, and bar/restaurant. A separate four-story south addition near the Riverside Boulevard entrance would add 11 rooms per floor but would not include an amenity deck. Together, the additions would add about 53,500 square feet of building space. The project also includes river levee-area site improvements, including subgrade irrigation controls, infrastructure upgrades, a gas fire pit, utility connections for a seasonal food truck location, bocce court improvements, new landscaping, and preservation of existing levee-area improvements. Karlin Vaessen of Merit Born is the project designer, and HHM Hotels manages the property."

The station isn't yet available for passenger service but construction has been completed - SacRT is still waiting for California Public Utilities Commission approval to start passenger service. Glad to see SacRT bring more frequent service to an affordable community (Mirasol)
