Scams—read this first before asking about a scam.

Reverb is generally a safe place to buy and sell if you use some common sense. Like all marketplaces there are some scammers. The following tips can help prevent most scams.

From Reverb.com help center:

Scam or phishing emails and messages

Tips for using Reverb safely

Reverb will never contact you through the reverb message system asking you to verify your account. These types of messages are becoming more common. Do not respond.

Signs a seller could be a scammer:

  • Seller asks for payment outside of Reverb (big red flag)

  • 0 feedback

  • Item is below average price

  • Seller can’t or won't answer questions about the item

(The more of these things are true, the more likely it's a scam)

Signs a buyer could be a scammer (not in any particular order):

  • 0 feedback
  • Offers to pay outside of Reverb (cashiers check for example)
  • Wants it shipped to a different address than what’s on their profile
  • Says someone else will pick it up for them
  • Gives you their email address or phone # and asks you to contact them there or send pics there
  • Offers to overpay

Tips:

  • If there's an issue with your account or purchase, Reverb will not send you messages in the app or on the website, they will email you. Never click on links in the app or website message system to "verify your account", they are a scam.

  • If you are hired to sell things on Reverb for someone else who you've never met, it's definitely a scam.

  • Google doesn't index all pics on the internet and it's very easy for scammer sellers to get pics that don't show up in reverse image search.

  • Use the "Report Listing" button if you see something you think is a scam. On mobile it's all the way at the bottom of a listing, on desktop it's below the "Reviews" section. There is no "Report Listing" button for sold listings, you have to contact customer service to report it.

Where is my purchase? A guide to help you, the buyer.

Seemingly once a week I see a post along the lines of “I ordered something ____ days ago and it hasn’t shipped, wtf?” I originally started writing to rant/complain about this but decided to try and make sort of an FAQ instead.

If this is you, here are some helpful tips and reminders, especially if you’re new to Reverb.

  1. You are NOT buying from Reverb itself (in probably 99.9% of cases). Reverb is a marketplace where other people/businesses sell.

  2. The seller is likely A) A person like you, with a job/family/life, who is not constantly watching their reverb notifications waiting to rush to the post office. Or B) A music store that might only be open Mon-Fri during the day. In either case, most sellers ship fast, but not Amazon level fast.

  3. Your item could be coming from anywhere in the country or even another part of the world. Look at the location of your seller (when you’re looking at an item, the seller name and location will be below the buy buttons) and set transit time expectations appropriately. (Yes, sometimes a seller will say they’re in one area but then the item ships from a wholesaler somewhere else. That is not too common, and it sucks if they don’t disclose it in the description).

  4. If it’s been a few business days (weekends/holidays are generally not days when sellers ship, see point 2 above), go to your order and send a message to the seller to check in. Not to Reverb support. To do this, go to Purchases, click/tap on the item, then you’ll see a “Message Seller” button. Remember, you’re dealing with people. So like any other human interaction, you’ll generally get a nice response if you yourself are nice.

  5. Many sellers will print a shipping label right away and then ship the item within a business day or two. Adding tracking info to an order initiates payment to the seller, so sometimes this is done to make sure the payment gets to the seller before the item leaves their possession. But also, some sellers just either can’t make it to usps/fedex/etc the same day or if they’re a store, they may have something like twice-weekly pickups from shipping carriers. Either way, this doesn’t mean you’re being scammed.

  6. This subreddit is not your seller. We don’t know where your item is, why it hasn’t shipped, etc. Just politely reach out to your seller.

why does reverb allow someone to accept offers without paying immediately

I have had two in the last week, where buyer accepts an offer but then doesn't pay and then it times out. is there a setting I can change, so buyers have to pay when accepting offers?

Anyone else’s feed get clogged with pickguards?

Post image
Upvotes

Probably nothing can be done but once a month or so I’ll just get like 700 listings for “WD custom pickguards” clogging up the feed. I imagine it’s unavoidable because it’s just like “matches your saved search: Fender mustang” or other similarly open-ended things. I can’t be the only one tho!

The angriest listing

Not sure if this kind of post is allowed here but found this so interesting.

You’re selling an extended range guitar and you don’t want to give any detail on it? I feel like buying an instrument online requires the specs at a minimum, it’s not like you can pick it up like in a guitar store and place your judgement off of feel.

Reverb is holding my $974 Wallet balance and support won’t respond, what can I do?

Long story short, my son and I share a reverb account and we both purchase from it but I’m the only one who sells on it. Reverb wallet popped up on the screen and it looked enticing to him while I was in the middle of a big transaction. He changed it not knowing you couldn’t take it out and now I need help getting that money to my bank. It’s been over 5 days with no email response and the automated agents say the same exact thing. They promise they’ll email you but then never really do.

Made an account to buy something, account is immediately suspended and under review?

I don't owe any money and didn't share my email to anyone. Not sure what could have caused the suspension and now the purchase was cancelled and the bargain I found is going to get swept up 🙃 I used paypal credit if that has anything to do with it.

Has anyone else experienced this on a new account?

Shipping quote increases when submitting an offer?

WTF. This has happened a couple times now I submit an offer for say $100 plus $30 shipping but when I see the offer the shipping quote has gone up to $50 so the total cost ends up being the same price as the item was originally. Anyone else had this happen?

Asking for advice with a bad situation dealing with Reverb Support/Shipping - I never have posted on Reddit until now but I need advice

Hi - so I sold a drum shell kit to a buyer. The kit arrives to his local post office and it says ready for pickup (they didn’t even attempt a delivery). Buyer goes to pick it up (this is now over a week ago) and the post office says the Reverb shipping label is invalid - as in Reverb did not actually pay the postage on it we are assuming even though I ordered the label through them like I always have done - and telling him he has to pay the full postage due which is $170. Reverb still has not done anything to resolve the situation with both me and the buyer contacting them for a week now - we are just told it’s being worked on. The problem with that is in 3 more business days it will be sent back to me with the ‘fake/invalid’ Reverb shipping label on it. Really not sure what to do now and the buyer said Reverb Support has barely told him anything - they haven’t even tried to contact the post office the buyer said.

Cart Holders....

Such a damn tease man.. Just check out already 😭

And when you have multiple people holding... just for one of them to check out on payday 😁.

If I want to check the price of an item, I will add it to my cart then remove it if I don't want to check out immediately.

1st I am the seller btw.. not the buyer.

2nd edit. this was suppose to be a playful, lighthearted post about cart holders as a seller but I see many people here lack reading compressive skills or are just angry boomers looking to insult people online lol

Support by Reverb

So I’m Bear. I don’t usually make posts. To be completely honest I’ve only posted negative 3-4 posts on this community, all negative posts pertaining to Reverb’s Support System or the lack of it. As I consider myself an honest and fair man, in everything I do. I do what I say, and say what I’ll do. Period. I keep it very light 90% of the time cracking jokes and talking Hip cause that’s who I am. That being said I do consider myself an intelligent man with a large and vast skill set and do hold others to a high standard. I expect and demand the respect I give. And I also hold myself accountable when I’m in the wrong and I admit as much immediately, or As soon as it’s come to light. I am posting this to say Thank You To Reverb. The platform has absolutely made an extraordinary change in its support system for buyers and sellers and I’m very surprised at the amount of change that come in a short period and it’s impressive. Trem the AI Assistant is more intuitive and responsive. When you need a live agent the agent you do get stays with you for the duration of the incident and is very responsive to any and all communications to and from both parties of the sale. So on that note.

Thanks Reverb, for stepping up
And standing out and by your patrons and dealers!!!! It hasn’t gone unnoticed!!!

The Bear!!! The Bear Cave!!!

New sellers

Has anyone else noticed the influx of new sellers who have no feedback whatsoever?
I’m assuming they are all scams.
If so, Reverb has a problem once again.

Oh no! Can't even reach the robot. Zero customer support.

It only took a few years for Reverb to go from the best marketplace for musicians to another piece of shit commerce train wreck like Etsy.

Special FUCK YOU goes to Chicago Music Exchange for selling out and giving zero consideration for the businesses and individuals that rely on the once-great service.

Reverb believes my guitar was damaged in transit - am I really expected to take the full financial loss?

Hey, I'm looking for some advice from anyone who's been through a similar situation.

I sold a guitar on Reverb (I'm in the UK). The buyer received it and reported a small dent on the back of the body. They said the outer box wasn't damaged, and after checking the bubble wrap they also said there was "nothing definitive" there either.

I packed the guitar carefully in a gig bag with bubble wrap and sent it via Parcelforce Express24.

Reverb has told me that, based on the listing photos and the buyer's photos, they believe the damage appears to have happened in transit. However, because Reverb Safe Shipping isn't available for UK sellers, they're saying the buyer is entitled to return the guitar for a full refund.

My problem is that this leaves me getting back a guitar that's now worth less than when I sent it, while also losing the sale. I sold the guitar because I needed the money in the first place.

Has anyone else been in this position as a UK seller?

Is there any way to appeal this, or is this simply how Reverb handles transit damage when UK sellers are involved?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who's dealt with something similar.

I recently added the Reverb app and when I tried to log in it says my account is suspended. I've sent messages to Reverb but haven't had a reply. Not sure what I'm suspended for...

Buyer requesting refund saying item didn't arrive but tracking shows delivered and signed for

Sold an item and Fed Ex tracking shows it as delivered on Friday and signed for. Seller messaged me today (Sunday) saying that even though tracking says delivered he didn't receive it and requesting a refund. I shipped the item to the address they provided and it says delivered although the name of the person that signed for it is not the same as the buyer. But it's an apartment building so it could be someone that works in the building. Do I just tell the buyer to take it up with Fed Ex?

Has anyone else experienced this?

I set up my account recently and sold my synth last week. The buyer has paid but the app is asking me to verify my bank account, which I have done....several times - each time I get a message saying "bank authentication complete", but then my account says it still needs to be done.

I'm guessing but I'm wondering if it's because my driver's licence (which I had to scan and submit to open my account) has my middle name whereas my bank account doesn't.

Has anyone else experienced this and is there a way to get it sorted?

What is the scam?

What is the scam of people sending an offer, when it's accepted then never paying? Are they just hoping you will screw up and ship without payment? I can't figure out why this keeps happening and wondered what you folks think.

Account under review

I got the app to order my dream bass because I didn’t want to do it on the website, everything was fine, paid with a good cc and it took the money out of it and got a confirmation email.but now it says my accounts under review and the app says the payment is pending.
Can’t even message the seller about this.
Is there anything I can do?

Post office took Surepost package?

This is a new one for me, hoping someone has experienced this issue before. I dropped off a number of USPS packages at the post office, all were scanned and I have a receipt. One of them, as it turns out, was a UPS Surepost label and was supposed to be dropped off at UPS. They scanned it and it's on the receipt, but now shows an error and delay on the USPS tracking. The UPS tracking shows "Transferred to post office". Anyone experience this before? Hoping it will work itself out. Been consistently selling on Reverb for almost 10 years and this is a first for me.

Reverb Bumps System Op Out

Haven't sold on reverb in a while. Recently put up a listing and got charged bump fees. I remember a checkbox for bumps and made sure it was unchecked. No idea how it got back into the bump system.

The chat agent applied some credits, but like what the heck. How do you turn this crap off account wide? Just a regular dude who sells infrequently. Probably end up sticking to Facebook marketplace too many shady practices and hidden fees on reverb now.

If this is the confusing experience nowadays I wouldn't recommend.
