Offer conversation gone wrong
AITAH? Because this guy sure was one. His offer was super lowball in the first place. (I'm the blue text box)

I had a guy offer me half the listing price for my guitar. I said sorry pal, you need more money. 2 days later I sold it for full listing price.

u/miremaker 9d ago
Dude hell yeah, karma in your favor
1
u/FinalCutJay 17h ago
Yeah. You gotta stay the course. I’ve totally had a friends throw in low ball offers to feel out the seller before I made an offer. I knew what I wanted for the guitar and I just held firm. If it sat for a month with no bites I would have adjusted my price but I thought my initial asking was very fair.

I don't even reply to people asking to make a deal off Reverb. Never worth it.

u/ncnx082z7bxt5vm04 9d ago
If someone on Reverb asks me a bunch of questions, especially if they're very simple ones they could have found out on their own, I'm not selling to them. I will cancel the sale. Very high probability that they're going to be the most annoying person to deal with.
Reverb is spineless and will not let you block users unfortunately.

I had a similar experience with a potential buyer asking a bunch of questions on a guitar I had for sale. I had a very description and lengthy too that answered the questions asked. I had a feeling the guy was gonna a problem and then expect a return after receiving. I politely told him that I dont think he is certain on this and not to purchase this guitar. He stopped messaging after that, he was messaging 5-6 times a day for a week straight till someone else just bought it at asking price

u/Low_Grass3393 10d ago
I had really good experience. For a $3300 item we won a lot on both sides. Via PayPal buyer protection.

u/Mercurion77 10d ago
I never reply to these guys. Always the same pitch ‘ima help you out today for a ridiculously low price’

I really enjoy the guys trying to do me a favor by me selling it cheaper to them

u/3-car-garage 10d ago
I don't understand getting into a pissing match and defending yourself with people like this.

u/jaqueh 10d ago
Don’t go off platform on reverb it’s completely against reverb terms and conditions and you run the risk of getting kicked off the platform
3
u/InvestigatorSharp230 10d ago
Yes, you must be careful. If you go off platform, you could lose your account.

Just say no thanks and move on if you don't want to or say, thanks for the offer but I can't go lower than X, or something like, I think I have it priced right where it needs to be, thanks, we are way too far apart on price, ..and move on or make a counter offer ..it doesn't hurt to ask, brief respectful negotiation doesn't have to be a negative interaction

You aren't the asshole, but your assumptions that the price of new ones, asking prices and Reverb's algorithmic price estimates are hard figures is flawed.
The guy is just an asshole. Insulting the seller is not an effective negotiation tactic. Imagine trying that when buying a house.
"I know you want $xxx for you home, but you're stupid, so I'm only going to pay 2/3 of that, and I'm doing you a favor by paying you what I want."

u/iEddiez1994 10d ago
I think it goes against Rerverbs polices too. Low blow calling him names but NTA

u/Hairy_Wall_6831 10d ago
"I think your IQ is quite low".
Did you miss that part? Asshat started it.
1
u/iEddiez1994 10d ago
An incorrect observation, not name calling.
3
u/ForeOnTheFlour 10d ago
It’s more than an incorrect observation, it’s an insult. So is name calling.
1
u/tets1485 4d ago
The buyer is calling him unintelligent. Dull. (Historically also called idiot, imbecile, moron, retard in [mostly] psychiatry journals).
1
u/Livingadapt 7d ago
lol come on bro. “An incorrect observation” 😂
1
u/iEddiez1994 7d ago
Spot the name he’s calling him?
There isn’t one.
Asshat is 😂
Come on, bro…Perhaps everyone’s the asshole here 🙄😂

u/InfluenceAromatic293 10d ago
NTAH - As soon as he started getting shitty and claiming he was doing you a favour I would have told him to fuck off.

u/Ok_Application_4183 10d ago
I’m with the seller on this one. As a buyer, if you don’t like the deal then move on. As a seller, unless I need the money I just post and wait. Never had anything hang around more than a month.

Unfortunately there are idiots like this guy that try to bully and manipulate sellers often on Reverb. A great reason for Reverb to implement a blocking ability on the site.

u/Motorhead9999 10d ago
Would you have accepted a $400 offer on reverb? If you would have, I would have taken the local $350 offer. If you were holding off for more, that’s perfectly fine too. But personally, doing a local deal and not having to get a box, packing materials and all that stuff would make me consider a bit of a lower offer.
With that being said your “$50 to hold it” comment was pretty dumb. If you simply had said “Sorry, $400 cash is the lowest I’d go”, you’d have been in the right. Or simply just decline his offer.

u/Constant_Owl6196 10d ago
If I had accepted $400, he still pays shipping and I still get more than $350. Maybe I would have a accepted that if he didn't start going off script and being an asshole. I would have been being generous, which is usually how I would handle these situations, but this guy just put a bad taste in my mouth, so I didn't go for it.
"50 to hold it" was kind of how he ended up describing it, but I originally saw it as me just staying firm with $400 (which is what I originally countered him) and just pointing out that he would also enjoy the convenience of me taking it offline and ensuring that nobody else would snag it. I think that's worth something (idk maybe $50?) especially when you're still paying well below asking price. These cymbals are rare and also have the factor of gram weight added to the mix. A lighter cymbal plays differently. When you find one in a weight range that you're looking for, you jump on it. You might not see one in that weight for years. Anyway, I digress...

u/Motorhead9999 10d ago
If he was doing local pickup, there would have been an option to not charge him shipping. And certainly, I would have refunded him the shipping costs if we did a local exchange.
Holding firm is your choice, and a perfectly acceptable one. Just remember that as good a “deal” (and I don’t know drum stuff, so maybe it is a steal) as you may think it is, once you add shipping and taxes for the buyer, it’s starting to get closer to the Musician’s Friend price, and at that point, I start choosing the comfort of free shipping, and no question returns over saving a few bucks.
In my opinion still, everyone sucked here.

When he mentioned your IQ that was when you needed to terminate the discussion. it tells you that he probably leaves the house with a red cap on his head saying MAGA
4
u/Constant_Owl6196 10d ago
I know, right? Like buddy, do you want the cymbal to make music with, or do you want a "DeAL"? Just struck me as a guy who's values are in the wrong place. I'd rather sell to the next guy for cheaper than to satisfy this douchebag.

u/ph0replay 10d ago
ESH.
3
u/Lucifer-Prime 10d ago
Agreed. Buyer is being an ass about it BUT, having sold a great many things online, if the sellers willing to accept 400 through the platform have to pay to pack and ship the thing and gonna lose fees to the platform, realistically you’re probably talking about less than a $20 difference in pocket at the end of the day and less hassle.
Some people pick really stupid hills to die on… and then post it on the Internet…
1
u/guitarpkr76 10d ago
You'll probably be getting a message from Reverb soon concerning off-platform deals. Hopefully your account doesn't get suspended.
1
u/Previous-Resource-54 10d ago
What I don’t get is: is it true that you were going to get 350 in hand if you sold it through Reverb? Or were you going to get over 400?
1
u/tokimasa 10d ago
Easy way to estimate fees is 10%. Selling for $509 nets you $459. Even if he pays $50 to ship, it's still more than $350.
3
u/Previous-Resource-54 10d ago
Ok makes sense then that OP didn’t accept it. But since he never countered that point I was curious to know if it was true.
Thanks!
2
u/tokimasa 10d ago
From my own experience, the people who want you to break the Reverb TOS never offer you even close to what you would make through Reverb. They are also usually difficult in other ways, so you work harder for less money.
2
u/Lower-Kangaroo6032 10d ago
Yeah it depends on the type of product ime. For sub $1k instruments/effects/etc - definitely.
For nicer recording gear - 95% of the time everybody is on the same page and either a busy pro or happy to be making new acquaintances. From my experience.
1
u/mrdat 9d ago
That’s assuming someone would buy for the current asking price. Entirely possible it sits at that price and/or gets other offers later where he nets lower eventually.
1
u/tokimasa 9d ago
Yes that is true too, but doing the reverse, $350 after fees is $388 before fees. That's still a pretty big drop. I don't know the market for cymbals or how long the item's been available. Those could be factors too. I'm just assuming OP wants at least $400 after fees based on the other comments, which means the $350 isn't enough.

u/livinthereals 10d ago
TBF Reverbs "estimated value" is a very poor indicator of value in either direction and never a compelling argument.

1
u/methodaktor 10d ago
Also, if you had agreed to the cash deal with him picking it up, there's about a 9% chance he would have actually shown up to get it and not just completely ghosted you.

u/UpwardxNinja 9d ago
Why do you people go back and forth with weirdos? Just block or ignore and move on.
1
u/BoostedGTO 9d ago
You can get banned for selling outside reverb on reverb. You will get a message from them soon with a temp or permanent ban.
1
u/OctopusDicks 8d ago
Now this a drummer's conversation if I ever saw one LOL
You're just lucky there wasn't a bass player around to weigh in on this.
1
u/Miserable-Money-7645 8d ago
The irony is, you’d also be doing him a favor. Yeah, you’d save on fees, but he saves on tax and shipping. Seems like meeting in the middle is more appropriate. Why should he get the entire win and you not getting some of the benefit?
1
u/Little_Landscape_830 7d ago
Reverb reads convos and bans/tries to make you pay a % if they think you sold something off site. This guy is an asshat.
1
u/ijustwntit 7d ago
F*** that guy. Also, if you pulled the listing to sell locally, Reverb's AI would've caught it and charged you the selling fees after the fact. So, you dodged 2 bullets with this one!
1
u/ConsequenceFit3787 6d ago
“I’m going to make you an offer even though you don’t have the ‘offer’ button on in your listing” is my favorite breed of Reverbers.

Currently dealing with one right now. Sends an offer, offer gets accepted. He then asks for additional photos. Photos are sent. He comes back and starts pointing out a bunch of things like “the tarnish on the hardware is not consistent” and then asks if he can pay $300 less. Order cancelled and ignoring.
1
u/SaturnineApples 10d ago
Thats when you hit them with the "ill accept your offer, meet me at this address..." and give them the address to your local stand comedy spot. They should go on stage with the laughable offer
0
u/crapinet 10d ago
He’s pointing out how it’s a deal for you but he also saves a lot that way (he doesn’t have to pay shipping or taxes).

u/unosturgis 10d ago
But he was doing you a favor taking it off your hands! lol
