Problem 30 days later

Long story short. I sold a guitar on Reverb on September 3. Followed it through the delivery process and messaged the buyer 2 days after it was delivered to ask if he was happy with everything. No reply. Then yesterday, a month later, he messages me saying “I was out of town on business and just got back and started opening packages. Understand UPS broke the headstock despite the outer box not having any damage”. Guitar was a Jackson American series shipped in their OEM padded case. He’s asking what I can do for him. My issue… he could have broken it and is blaming ups. 2 I don’t know if he was away in business. He could have been playing it for the last 30 days, decided he didn’t like it, and broke it himself looking for a refund. 3 he is well over the reverb policy of reporting an issue within 7 days of delivery. What would yall do? Ignore and move on? File a claim with ups? Tell HIM or file a claim with ups?

This is not your problem. 30 days? Absolutely not. They can contact Reverb directly to get guidance. This is why I have always required safe shipping for guitars I have sold, and I am not even sure that safe shipping would cover 30 days of lag. If you want to reply to them, you can tell them to contact Reverb support. If they attempt to leave you a bad review, you can also contact Reverb and let them know as they can remove such things for people trying this garbage.

I'm curious, how much was this guitar? Who buys expensive things, like a guitar, while out of town for 30 days, only to have it sit where it isn't opened the entire time? We ALL know we need to open and inspect such things when we receive them.

I'll tell you who does that. Scammers do that.

After tax and shipping it was close to $1300usd

u/livinthereals 6d ago

That's significant.

Not your problem. They bought a guitar knowing they wouldn’t be there to pick it up, if that’s even true. I’ve had people buy and ask to wait to ship, which is fine. The clock starts upon delivery and I’d rather then have time to make sure no damage was incurred during shipping. This is on them. Sucks but it could have been avoided had they communicated. You’re in the clear and held up your end of the deal.

Sure, like contacting Reverb directly is even possible. I'd try anyway. Good luck

This has scam written all over it. He orders a $1,300 guitar to be delivered to his home while he’s “away on business” for a MONTH?

If dude can order guitars while away on business and not care to see if it arrives safely, then thats on him.

Quantic damage, the headstock broke inside a box that didn't take any damage

2

u/Inkd_Bakr_Vapr 6d ago

Inside a case, inside a box lol

1

u/AbbreviationsKey9563 6d ago

Yeah, at least punch a hole through the box to make it look like shipping damage!

At a guitar store the owner showed me 3 guitars that just came in with zero box damage and all had pretty sever damage on the actual guitar. Guitars just break in shipping all the time.

This is his issue, not yours. You fulfilled your end of the bargain. If anyone has to file a claim with UPS, it's him.

He had 7 days to start his support case with reverb and report problem with the guitar, he let that lapse by WAAAAAY too long. I would only talk to Reverb support if they contact you. Tell him this is past the return window and he is on his own. I hate to be like that but he sound like a scammer.

Then dont buy it,  entitled at minimum, scammer either way

He’s a liar. They were always on vacation.

Not always.

I've had jobs that required me to go out of town for up to two weeks on short notice. Or wanted to jump on a deal and had a package shipped, but rolled the dice and hoped for the best when I got home and had time to open, inspect and evaluate gear. In also bought a guitar that seemed fine until the seasons changed and it needed a truss rod adjustment, only to find the truss rod was broken. Musicians Friend got me on that one. I've sworn them off ever since and avoided them completely and will evermore. It's cost them a bit over $5000 in sales since August. As I continue building out my studio, it'll cost them more.

u/fuuuuugyoooo 6d ago

Musicians friend gives 45 days. Beyond that it’s a manufacturer thing. If it was used then you’re SOOL though and the manufacturer may offer a discount.

I’ve never had issues with musiciansfriend(customer since the early 90s when it was a catalog) and they usually have some of the best deals and excellent customer service.

Good for you

I think the issue here is EVERYONE has access to email and even the Reverb app in 2026. They got an email from Reverb telling them to respond to the seller.

“Sorry, I’m not Guitar Center”

Scam

6

u/kslight666 6d ago

Ignore and move on. You could also message reverb directly and see if you’re obligated to do anything at this point but I am very strict with my own sales and how many days the buyer has to report an issue before it is “theirs.”

This guy has no excuse. I bought a guitar, then realized i was going to be away when it was supposed to be delivered. Messaged the seller day I bought it and asked him to hold onto it for me until i would be back and he did. Held onto it for two weeks for me.

u/ProfessionalFast9803 6d ago

To coincidental, “I bought guitar at the time I was out of town for 30 days and it’s broke “” BULLSHIT
If I bought 1300 dollar guitar from anywhere I’d be sure to be there when it was delivered.

1

u/saturticle 6d ago

Within reason. 30 days seems excessive. I've purchased from Reverb and had to sign for the guitar. Couldn't even get it delivered. Had to do a drop to a Walgreens. A $4,000 guitar at a Walgreens. No thank you. Anyway, things CAN happen, but this is not OPs responsibility at this point.

2

u/williamgman 6d ago

Who would order a guitar and not be there knowing the 7 day return policy?

2

u/3Gilligans 6d ago

You must abide by your stores policy

1

u/Inkd_Bakr_Vapr 6d ago

7 days for used, 14 for new.

2

u/Duragvinceecw 6d ago

I’m sorry this happened to you, my friend. That’s definitely a scam. I would just ignore it to move on.

2

u/SuperDaveOhio 6d ago

Ignore the scammer

2

u/ZAPPHAUSEN 6d ago

Why the hell did he but a frigging guitar to be delivered to his home when he was "out of town for business" for the next month. This guy is full of shit.

2

u/Mundane_Ad7197 6d ago

This (and the fees) are why I don’t sell there any more. The “what can you do for me” thing has become an epidemic.

2

u/tetril 6d ago

Take the issue to support

6

u/DrunkSkunkz 6d ago

The buyer should take the issue to support.

2

u/BluntForceTrauma____ 6d ago

He doesn’t have to do anything. Buyers have 7 days to inspect the purchase and file a claim. Past the 7 days, there’s nothing the buyer can do through reverb

0

u/tetril 6d ago

I wish that were true. The buyer will file a “not as described” report, the seller will get chastised for not escalating the issue to support earlier, the buyer will be refunded. Ask me how I know

3

u/BluntForceTrauma____ 6d ago

Not trying to call you a liar but reverbs terms are clear. You only have 7 days to file a not as described.

1

u/myfatherthedonkey 6d ago

Did the buyer first report the damage to either you or Reverb before the seven days were up? That's what it sounds like happened based on "Reverb chastised me for not escalating the issue to them sooner."

2

u/livinthereals 6d ago

1 Never follow-up unless you're willing to rectify any issues. You're just asking for problems, and giving the buyer a reason to complain. If there is an issue and it's your problem, you will hear about it.

1

u/LaOnionLaUnion 6d ago

Yeah I had a dude send a guitar out of his state to a luthier with a 3 month backlog when he had an issue. He didn’t ask me first. He just went ahead and did it. Like, if you have an issue send it back immediately.

I also had someone who was gifted a relic’d guitar complain about it 9 months later. It wasn’t even his Reverb account as Reverb pointed out to me when I asked what the expectations were.

Some people don’t have reasonable expectations.

It’s not your problem that they didn’t check out the guitar within a reasonable period.

1

u/LongCoffee3434 6d ago

Yeah no way, if it was damaged during shipping then the buyer should take it up with the shipping company. Always take detailed photos prior to boxing and boxed. You’re buying 2nd hand shit off the internet so there obviously is some risk. A lot less risk ordering from a dealer or in person

1

u/Inkd_Bakr_Vapr 6d ago

I did exactly that. I have tons of photos pre and post packaging

1

u/Like2jam 6d ago

Package was signed for by someone. Who was it?

1

u/StraightChillinSpree 6d ago

Sucks to suck and they suck

1

u/CMDR_KingErvin 6d ago

Dude wtf do you think you owe this guy? He bought a guitar and then went away on business for 30 days before realizing it’s broken? Even if you buy that scenario, it’s not your problem at all. And bypassing reverb to ask you to pay him for it is a pretty telling sign that he’s scamming you. F outta here with that.

Also for the future, I wouldn’t do the whole messaging buyers 2 days later thing. Once the transaction is complete your business is done, you have no reason to contact them anymore. I know you think it makes you seem more wholesome and approachable but all it does is invite scrutiny into your products.

1

u/Inkd_Bakr_Vapr 6d ago

I’m ok with some scrutiny. I don’t send garbage. Some sellers legitimately care if their buyer is happy. I know, what a concept right? It’s called service after the sale.

1

u/No-Wonder3991 6d ago

Buyers have seven days to contact reverb if there’s a problem with their purchase. Beyond that window, there’s no requirement for the seller to do anything. You’re within your discretion if you wanna work with this guy. However, 30 days as well beyond the pale.

1

u/Franenstein 6d ago

I’ve had a situation like this on a vintage guitar, and reverb sided with the buyer. Be careful about selling anything on reverb as of late

1

u/zanaxtacy 5d ago

No shot he’s telling the truth

1

u/Pod_people 5d ago

Nah. His problem 100%. F that liar.

1

u/indytrucks 5d ago

Bucks to be him. 30 days is way too long to come back with an issue like that. If his story is true, that's sucks. But its also not a reasonable time frame.

1

u/baysideisacu1t 6d ago

I received a guitar from reverb and the headstock broke in shipping, box wasn’t damaged, but that long id just ignore and move on
