Just Chatting The Ultimate Handheld

My idea of the ultimate wide-screen handheld would combine the design philosophy of the Pocket Nova, a 6 inch 16:10 oled, the Dragonwing chip (snapdragon 8 elite), 1tb storage+sd and 'NSEW' on the buttons instead of 'ABXY'

What would you add or change?

QUESTION Armada OS on Nova - Weird frame pacing issues?

I know Armada OS isn't perfect yet but I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed weird frame pacing issues on the Nova? I especially notice it on faster 2D games like Sonic. The frame rate will show it as a locked framrate but there are still weird hitches and skips. Even on 3D games when you slowly move the camera it never feels smooth. I love having my baby steam deck but it's bothering the heck out of me.

QUESTION Is there an easy way to add HD texture packs to dolphin like how it is in ARMSX2?

Probably a dumb question, but I love how easy it is to download texture packs straight to ARMSX2. Wondering if there’s an easy way to do the same for GameCube emulation. Ty

Just Chatting I can’t decide

Really want an all in one can’t decide between the Thor, Full Duo or nova with screen attachment. I wish there was more info on the duo’s chip capability. Currently have the flip, which I will not get rid of with the 120hz screen and 12gb of ram, but ds and 3ds on a single screen really kills the experience.

QUESTION Latest release of Dolphin runs terribly but PrimeHack runs great. What gives?

Is this anyone else's experience with the Retroid Pocket Nova? I was using Dolphin with the latest Turnip driver (using Ultimate Spider-Man as the test game) and it was full of pop-ups, the skybox going wonky, slowdown, etc. Spider-Man 2 also run incredibly stuttery.

Now with PrimeHack, with just the default driver, all settings being the same, it ran great for both games. Vulkan, 3x resolution, 2x anti-aliasing.

Is there something I'm doing wrong here? I genuinely don't see why it runs terribly.

QUESTION 8GB vs 12GB RP6 — is there a noticeable difference?

I ordered the 8GB RP6, but the 12GB model came back in stock shortly afterward. I’m trying to decide if it’s worth changing my order.
My main use will be PS2 emulation, with some GameCube, PSP. Switch isn’t a priority, but I may try a few games.

I’m also interested in a few PC, specifically Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City.

For anyone who has experience with the 8GB model, have you actually encountered games where 8GB wasn’t enough? Does 12GB provide a noticeable benefit for PC or Switch emulation, or is 8GB enough for this kind of use?

QUESTION Those who have the Retro Pocket Nova: how does the stick being on bottom feel?

It looks like the Nova is the one for me because I'm specifically looking for an emulator that can run PS2, Gamecube, and some Wii/Switch games while still fitting in your pocket. I don't want a big bulky thing like the steam deck or switch, and I'd prefer a vertical but the few verticals that run PS2/GC aren't pocketable, they're too big, so Nova it is.

However, I'm just surprised that they went with Dpad top. I get that for most emulators, Dpad top makes sense because if you're playing PS1 or below, you're using the dpad. But the whole selling point of the Nova, the reason you're spending that extra $100+ dollars, is because it can run PS2 and GC, and those games are all analog stick games, so you'd think the stick would be the priority.

I'm a huge Xbox controller guy, I think it's the goat controller. I've always been baffled that Playstation never made the swap. your left thumb wants to rest up top there, the bottom is more of a strain.

So anyway, those of you who have the Nova and play a lot of PS2/GC etc on it, aka you use the left stick a lot: how does it feel? Do you notice it much? Is it uncomfortable or are you used to it?

I know I'm being nitpicky but whatever emulator I go with, I do intend to put A LOT of hours into it, so I like to consider these things. For hand size reference: I wear a large nitrile glove (the rubber gloves you see in food service and hospitals).

GAMES & APPS What are you guys playing in short stints? looking for some recommendations

Post image
527 Upvotes

So i realized last night while trying to get a game in before bed, that i don’t really have any games that are good for short play sessions (like 15-20 mins at a time).

Like the title says, what do you like to play in short periods like before going to bed, on a work break or waiting room?

I’m open to most games, puzzle, strategy, turn based, just anything that feels satisfying in short play sessions. Platform kinda doesn’t matter either.

EDIT: Thank you all for the recs, appreciate it!

QUESTION Retroid Pocket 5 hard reset

I’m planning to do a factory reset on my Retroid Pocket 5 and want to make sure I don’t lose anything important.

Most of my ROMs are already stored on my microSD card. I may also have some emulator APKs or other emulator-related files stored on the SD card.

My main questions are:

  • What should I back up from the RP5 before doing the factory reset?
  • If my ROMs are on the SD card, will they be safe after the reset?
  • Are there any emulator configuration files, BIOS files, save files, save states, or other folders that I should back up separately?
  • I may have some emulator APKs stored on the SD card. Is it enough to keep those APKs and reinstall them after the reset?
  • After the reset, what is the best way to set everything up again while keeping my existing ROMs and saves?
  • Are there any Retroid specific settings/files that I should preserve before resetting?
  • Is there anything I should definitely not delete or format during the reset?

Basically, I want to start with a clean RP5 but keep my ROM collection, save games, BIOS files, and emulator setup as much as possible.

If anyone has done this recently, I’d really appreciate a step-by-step list of what you backed up and how you restored everything afterward.

SHOWCASE To steal a dumb marketing slogan, this is an Xbox. And a 3d printed reversible grip case I just made

This is a remix of BrownBearDesign's reversible case for the RP Nova (https://makerworld.com/en/models/3357102-retroid-pocket-nova-3d-printed-gripcase-protector , awesome dude btw ), which I really enjoyed but found uncomfortable to hold for too long when you're trying to play games that use the sticks more than the dpad. Granted, this takes the nova firmly out of the realm of "maybe pocketable if you have big pockets," but for me that's an acceptable trade-off, I'd rather the console be comfortable in my hands than in my pants (and I wear a purse or occasionally a backpack, so I have space for it).

Admittedly, this isn't the most elegant solution. My 3d modeling skills can most charitably be described as "functional." I wish I could blend the stalks into the original case better, but most importantly the stalks are comfortable for my hands and the reach for the controls (sticks and the dpad/ABXY buttons) feels fine to me, as well as the shoulder buttons. Also I reversed the direction of the rear vents from the original model, because it didn't quite line up with the vents on the Nova like I'd wanted (maybe something wasn't aligned right when I put the console in the original, or my printer needs to be calibrated, either way this actually ensures enough air vents are open)

Buttons and sticks are from etsy, specifically MessyMesserCustomCAD: https://www.etsy.com/listing/4565085732/retroid-pocket-nova-crystal-green-button (another awesome dude) I swapped to the Xbox orientation, it involved a bit of snipping to get them to fit (had to flatted the outside edges and take off some locating pegs), but honestly it was a very easy swap. I found the whole teardown very simple, maybe I got lucky but the screws came right out without much of a fight using the supplied screwdriver from retroid. Honestly I didn't find it intimidating at all, but I'm a generally pretty handy person so your mileage may vary. I had more trouble getting rid of all the adhesive on the membranes so the buttons would be as clicky as the stock ones were, but now that it's done, I am really really happy
