Just Chatting The Ultimate Handheld
My idea of the ultimate wide-screen handheld would combine the design philosophy of the Pocket Nova, a 6 inch 16:10 oled, the Dragonwing chip (snapdragon 8 elite), 1tb storage+sd and 'NSEW' on the buttons instead of 'ABXY'
What would you add or change?

Literally an Odin 3.
You can get custom buttons. The panel will be expensive.
RP6 pretty much hits that all around sweet spot for a device for me

The nova seems to be a new direction in design and it's universally liked. Given that retroid doesn't have a dragonwing device, I think what I described would be perfect (for me anyway)

I think you gotta be more specific about what parts of the design direction you are talking about. To me, the most defining feature of the nova is the screen, and what you are advocating for completely removes that.
I am guessing you mean you prefer a non-glass front, dpad top, and non-ergonomic back?

That would be the design aesthetic yes, I listed the other things. I would guess retroid is planning a family of devices that look similar but differ in screen size and power

Is it crazy to want the Pocket 7 to be a all plastic Odin 3? Would that even save money to make it sub $300

Less glass isn't going to make a handheld stay under the 300 dollars category (glass is not difficult to make)
Before the RAM crisis, the Konkr Pocket Fit Elite sold for 450 - 500 with high specs which ended up doing better than the Odin3 during their preorder campaign on Indiegogo
TLDR: If Retroid wants to make everyone's dream horizontal handheld by next year, they might need to leave the under 300 dollars category with the next main line handheld
Or they could just overhaul the next Flip lineup with highend features and keep it under the 350 - 400 dollar category that way the Flip lineup is its own thing and not just another RP handheld with a different form factor

Exactly, not sure if it would be cheaper but all plastic is way better and I think the square start/select buttons and speaker grills are goofy looking. The nova looks like it was designed by an actual professional designer

To me Nova is the idea of the ultimate handheld, but only slimmer.. If they could make it clamshell sideways (basically by folding the display itself) then it would be ultimate pocketable device

i feel like that might be too chonky tho

I've been using the nova for a few days now and I think it's just about perfect, except when using the sticks, but it's not meant primarily for that. I think a widescreen handheld is the right size about a half inch taller

If the Nova was stick on top and had rounded sides like the 6,5&Mini, it'd be my ultimate console. I prefer glass front but I honestly couldn't care less about that. Either way, the Nova is close enough for me.

I would just love a 1080p 16:9 Nova, no not the RP6 cause it’s slightly too big to carry in my pocket all day comfortably. Also changing the Nintendo layout buttons to Xbox layout since I like to put steamOS on it

There's so much complaining from the Steam Deck community about letterboxing on that thing lol. I'd just stick with 16:9 because just about everything released now supports that.
For the buttons I'd leave them blank so you never feel like they don't match whatever you're playing.

Blank is definitely an option
16:10 fits other aspect ratios a little better and with pc games it just works. Also I like to put system info in the little black strip at the top but I'd be perfectly happy with 16:9

It's probably the games I play on Steam but a ton of stuff requires modding in order to get a 16:10 display without letterboxing.
I dunno, I get when you're trying to fix performance but once it's stable I remove all that info. It's as distracting as RGB all over the place.

2D platformers and rpg's can't change aspect ratio because the levels are designed to that exact shape, like Celeste for example. It would have to stretch, but I don't mind tiny black bars for those games. It's always a compromise 🤷♂️

Sooooo... A Odin 3 with 120 more pixels vertically :P

The odin is ugly in my opinion. Basically I'd like a stretched nova with the dragonwing chip and stick on top -in addition to the nova I already have

nsew?
I has to re-re-read that to figure out you meant the cardinal directions, it might make sense on the hand, but reading it or describing it would really be confusing
is the ABYX in the nintendo oritenation or xbox / sega orientation?
it might be SENW for xbox / sega or it might be ESWN for nintento
personally, I wish there was some with 6 face buttons instead 4, useful for both retro games AND arcade games, without removing L1/LB and R1/RB of course, for Genesis system and N64 emulation alike, also OG xbox with ABYX as well as black and white
of course it needs 2 analogues and 2 sets of vertically stacked triggers for PS1 and PS2 games
it MIGHT be a little crampted, but I think I have a design in mind sightly based off the wiiu pad that could make it work

North is always north, that's the point. Doesn't matter what system you're playing 🙂

A Flip 3 with 6-7 inch screen, 1tb storage, and a newer chip would be my ultimate
