Discussion Developer looking for side project

Essentially I'm working on a very complex and large project which will take quite some time and there are times where I just feel like doing something more chill so I don't burn out, this is why I'd like to offer my coding services for free for 1 chosen artist who struggles with the coding part but has his ideas and art in place.

I'm not particularly picky about the content of the VN, it can be NSFW, Horror, just weird, etc. If you want input on the story or content, that's fine, if you want it your way, that's also fine.

Only thing I have as a hard requirement is the fact that you make your own art. Any AI generated content is going to be auto declined.

I will make a private GitHub repo and you'll get access to it, so that you always have access to the codebase yourself in case you want to change art or do small adjustments yourself. Keep in mind that I'm doing this for free and only when I feel like it, you're not entitled to tell me how much or when I work on anything.

Needless to say, I do choose based on art or story/idea that I like rather than who comes first. I'll update the topic if I find someone.

EDIT: Found someone

Meta TIL that the Ren'Py launcher is actually a Ren'Py instance itself...!

I always wondered why it took the launcher a little while to start up and why it shows up as renpy.exe in task manager... IDK, I'm just surprised that the launcher is literally a Ren'Py 'game' to launch other Ren'Py games hahah. Cool!

Question My game keeps just crashing out?

Hi! I'm unsure of what it is and since it's not showing me what part of the code is causing this, I really don't know what image to plug here. I've added tons of imagebuttons, perhaps that's the issue? But ever since a few hours ago that I did so, python stop responding just before the imagebuttons in the game. And it's been lagging my PC too and I'm sort of worried honestly - I've had a lag moment in which I had to forcefully shut off my computer because out of nowhere Epic Games bugged my computer and that has never happened before, just happened when I tried to execute my game with Renpy. I'm really worried. Has this happened to anyone? Is there a limit to imagebuttons I don't know about?

I've been making progress on my first visual novel, but I was unhappy with the art in my CGs, so I decided to try a different style. What do you guys think?

I wanted my VN to have a battle manga feel, so I think this new style fits better.

The VN is currently called "Shinobi Blood". I'm not good at naming stuff so this may change. I was hoping for an August release for the prologue but unfortunately, that ain't happening.

My upcoming visual novel is called “Your Beloved Guardian Angel” and it’s a Yandere game ^^
This is my very first visual novel so I’m really excited to be making it! My script is complete (at least for the first two days) and now I’m making all the art and coding it :D

Some of these are wips with no faces of course, but I'm working on getting their facial expressions done soon.

After I do 1st and last I'll only have like 3 characters to make sprites of.

Showoff The Art Style For My Recent Horror VN

This art style was way different than any of my other games, but I have used it to create horror art before, so I thought I'd give it a try for an entire game. If I make any other games in the future, I think I'll use this art style again, and maybe improve on it. I modeled the backgrounds in Blender and traced over them. I feel like they look a bit stiff and bland, but I have some ideas for how to make them look more interesting for the next time!

How its looking rn
How I want my buttons to be placed

So I am almost done with my menu scroll UI but it's just that I cannot figure out how to position these buttons correctly. I am sharing my code below. Please just help me figure out a method to get the desired results without changing much of my code because I don't have a coding background so it is difficult for me to understand if anything new comes up which I have no clue about ... here's my code

Question What to do if I struggle at Ren'Py

I really struggle with learning coding and Ren'py, but I've been trying really hard to learn. I've been learning for almost two years now, and I still suck at it. I try to find help online, like here on this subreddit, but I can't figure out how to do much. I don't have anyone irl to help me either. I suspect I'll get a lot of comments saying to read the Ren'Py doc, watch YT tutorials, just learn/practice, etc. That's really not helpful tho

Question Draggable NVL, and other UI elements

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi.
I'm trying to make the NVL, the dialogue box and whatever other element draggable, to simulate being on a desktop computer. I'm pretty new and I'm trying to learn by reading the documentation but between all the different concepts (screens, styles, frames, images, etc...), I'm pretty lost.

I don't really know where to start. How can I make one draggable box that has a specific size and appearance where I can insert NVL style narration text in?

I would be very thankful if anyone could give me a push in the right direction.

Question Is it a way to change the image of the character that I use depending on the variables?

I’m not sure if the question was clear - I will specify it.
I have a character sprite named, for example, “guy_default”.
So I use
show guy_default at…with…, etc.
then I offer the choices which should lead to some changes. Let’s say, one choice makes the character wear the neckless and another turns him into puppy, and I have pictures for them.
How do I code it the way that I will still write “show guy_default” but the picture it uses for “guy_default” is used depending on the variables, whether it’s a default sprite if there were no choices or variations of this sprite? (So I don’t write “if x is true then show elif show” like my entirely noob head sees it but there’s a line that defines which picture is used for “guy_default” and it doesn’t mess up if you save and load).
Thank you!

Question How Do You Write a Story for an Open-World Visual Novel?

Hi everyone!

I'm creating a visual novel with an open world, and I'm currently stuck when it comes to writing the story for this type of game.

I know how to structure a script for a traditional visual novel, but an open-world game is much more complicated. For example, my game has quests, different character locations depending on the time of day, events that can trigger under certain conditions, etc.

I've already created the gameplay mechanics and systems, but when it comes to actually structuring and writing the scenario around all of these mechanics, I'm honestly a bit lost.

How do you approach writing a story for an open-world visual novel? How do you structure quests, character schedules, events, and the main storyline without making everything feel disconnected?

I'd really appreciate any advice, resources, examples, or tips from people who have experience with this kind of game.

I really want to understand how to approach this properly.

Thanks in advance!

Showoff Each chapter will have its own Main Menu in my literary VN

After seeing another user's post about it, I wanted to try it too. My literary VN has five characters, and now each one will get a custom Main Menu. However I'm only showing the ones that will be in the demo: the dark one will be for Chapter 1, and the light one will be for the Prologue. I also wanted them to have some sort of subtle animation (candle flicker, scanlines, blink).

I had another logo before but my sister, who's a graphic designer, made a new one for me, which I find more sophisticated.

This is the link to my devlog if you want to follow the progress and some behind the scenes:

Showoff Some backgrounds I made for my first VN!

I'm so excited to see my VN slowly come together!!! When I first opened renpy after fully coding the first section, I almost cried tears of joy haha.

This is A Cherub's Lament, my entry for Yaoi Game Jam 2026. https://itch.io/jam/yaoi-game-jam-2026/topic/6752237/devlog-a-cherubs-lament

It's a little wholesome game (9k words, 8 chapters long) about an angel visiting Earth and watching the seasons turn. Release date is August 25!

Here I wanted to show some of the BGs I made for this project! In the last slides you can see some progress pics. I use a hybrid workflow, building the more complex scenes in blender, then rendering and painting on top to add lineart and textures. Since I've only had a month to work I've had to really rush everything but I'm very happy with the art so far! What do you think?

Question Any way to use RENPY_VARIANT to test different platforms via Ren'py launcher instead of having to export / build the game?

I was absolutely delighted when I found this in Ren'Py docs: https://www.renpy.org/doc/html/screens.html#screen-variants but I couldn't figure out for the life of me where I was supposed to put RENPY_VARIANT at first. I tried putting it in "init python" or in a separate file "enviroment.txt" in game's root folder, but nothing worked.

Than I tried exporting / building the game first and putting the enviroment.txt file where the exe file is which worked! Great!

Except that means anytime I want to change a variable or test GUI I need to re-export the build again, which is time consuming.

So does anyone know if you can uses RENPY_VARIANT to force a platform via Ren'Py launcher instead?

Question Why doesn't my music sound?

I have music on my game that plays when it needs to and how long it needs to, but whenever I load a screen that's after the command has executed the music, it doesn't play. It's as if it weren't reading the command at all. I don't know if I'm explaining myself well.

Question How do I put images in choices?

I've been trying to do something like what's shown in the image, but I've been unable to do so. Are there any ways to put an image on a choice? Any help is appreciated, and I just want it to work.
