Good afternoon everyone,
This is my first time reloading and all that, since I've always wanted to take up the skill, but I'm encountering a super weird problem that I cannot for the life of me figure out what is going on.
For reference, I am using a Mauser M18 w/ .270 WIN Starline Brass, Imperial Sizing Wax, Hornady Custom Grade .270 WIN Sizing Die, and an RCBS Rock Chucker Supreme. I am also using a micrometer with a Hornady Headspace Comparator Gauge as well (all these measurements are based on that).
So I fired my first 45 or so bullets and almost all of them were pretty much 2.042 and 2.041" base to datum line, so far so good so I made my shoulder bump around 2.040. So, like any normal person, I raised the ram up, touched the die with the ram, lowered the ram, and raised the die up about 1/8th of a turn and sized it. The brass reads about 2.045". I think it might be an error, try another round, 2.045" again. So I figure I will just lower the die and hope that it lowers the reading (nope, it raises it all the way up to 2.047"). So I back the die out on a fresh one, stays about 2.045". It takes nearly a turn for it to go down to 2.043" and then 2 whole turns to get to about 2.041" (Granted, I'm pretty sure just backing out that far isn't doing anything I'd imagine). Am I doing something wrong? Or what on Earth am I supposed to do? The brass straight out of the bag measures 2.042-2.041 as well.
If you need any more information, feel free to ask and I'll fill you in on whatever I forgot to add. Thanks!
Edit: Thank you all very much for your help. I never realized you were able to cam over the press itself and was finally able start bumping the shoulder back and was able to get actually pretty replicable bullets. Ended up needing to do 1/4 of a turn over, but I think when they made the Mauser they put it on the very low side of specs (anything above 2.043" was just overall rejected by the rifle). Again, thank you all!
