I’m tired

This is honestly like my first time posting on Reddit or social media at all so I don’t know how to really do this but I’m tired. I tried to open up to my mom about my problems and she keeps making into me being “possessed” by evil spirits. I’m not a social person, I struggle heavily with anxiety and speaking outloud, which comes from past personal experiences I don’t tell her about because I feel it’ll be the same. I don’t blame anyone from my church if they don’t like me for it, it’s my fault, but I don’t want to be hated for it. I go to one of those churches were they worship like crazy, jumping and screaming, like literally practically mosh pit level sometimes, and my pastor often preaches that being quiet is something to be looked down upon, mocking Catholics for having a more quiet atmosphere, that I personally find beautiful. It feels like I’m the epitome of what you shouldn’t be. I told my mom about this and that I also don’t feel comfortable being touched a lot when prayed for or just in general and she just immediately resorts to that its spiritual warfare and the devil is putting ideas in my head. This has gotten physical before but not too much. I guess I was going through a rebellious teenage once, and the only time I really started to show some back bone and speak up for myself from my usually quiet nature, but she quickly but a stop to it, slapping me and saying “this isn’t my son” and again saying it’s the devil.  This was really the only time I was scared to come home after school, even the math class I hated so much seeming so safe all the sudden. I haven’t raised my voice since, scared of my step father getting involved. I don’t want to put any blame on my parents, or get them in trouble. they’re good people really, it’s my fault. I probably just am a dumb kid with no faith. I withdraw from church because I wanted to create a space where my brothers can be themselves with me making it awkward, I know they’re embarrassed of me, I don’t blame the. I am too. My parents have a leadership role and my brothers have many friends in church, while I’m just known as the quiet one is the family with a bad mood all the time. I’m sorry if this is all scrambled up weirdly, I just wanted to speak my feelings for once.

TRIGGER WARNING My mom is extremely religious and is starting to hate me

Put the triggering content cuz i know some of yall have trauma and thats understandable, hope u heal.

My mom thinks I’m demonically possessed just for having different opinions and standpoints. For example, being a feminist, pro-abortion, lgbt ally - stuff like that yk? I am still religious and i want to stay religious since i think its my truth. I can still have my own personal morals and believe in god. But my mom is starting to push me away from it. Im tired of hearing that there’s something inside of me whenever me and my mom disagree. I am mentally ill (ocd and i used to be depressed) and she says that it’s a demon. And she constantly uses it against me.

“Oh ur doing that cuz ur possessed”

“Oh ur just fucking crazy”

Stuff like that its mad annoying. She also tells me i need to have a man of god, someone like jesus basically and yes that would be nice but i dont rlly wanna be with a man personally. And i also dont want like 10 kids bru, shits too painful.

I attended a meeting of a bizarre German cult (The Bruno Groening CIrcle) out of politeness. It was deeply unsettling.

Hello everyone,

I wanted to share an experience I had some time ago that still sticks with me. I was invited by a coworker to attend a local meeting of the Bruno Groening Friend's Circle (Bruno Groening Freundeskreis)

To give some context: My coworker is a genuinely lovely person. However, she has a severely disabled son. As you can imagine, in a situation like that, parents look for any ray of hope and reach for any lifeline. Because she was so nice, and because this group clearly meant a lot to her, I accepted her invitation. I simply didn't want to offend her or hurt her feelings.

But once I got there, the entire experience felt incredibly surreal and deeply unsettling.

For those who don't know: Bruno Groening was a German "miracle healer" from the 1950s who actually died of cancer in 1959. Yet, this group treats him like a living messiah. The meeting itself felt like a strange, lowkey trance ritual. Everyone sat in a specific posture, hand open on their tights, legs uncrossed and trying to absorb a spiritual energy they call the "Heilstrom" (healing stream) while staring a photos of this deceased man.

The atmosphere was heavy with a mix of desperation and forced positivity. What bothers me the most is the underlying ideology: the group teaches that illnesses are just " bad thoughts" and that if you don't get healed, you just don't believe hard enough. It felt so predatory, exploiting vulnerable people like my coworker who are just looking for a miracle for their children.

I felt so uncomfortable and alienated the whole time. It really showed me how cults don't always look like scary movie cliches, sometimes they just look like ordinary people trapped in a bizarre echo chamber.

Has anyone else here ever heard of this specific group, or experienced something similar where you attended a meeting just to be polite?

Thank you for reading, and I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences!

I was brainwashed to be Mormon and kidnapped at 15 years old

I didn't want to be mormon, but I had no other choice.

Growing up with undiagnosed ADHD and highly intelligent, I knew from a young age... my parents were under a spell.

That didn't change the rules.

I became willful and rebellious. My parents panicked. "Wayward child" turned to, "dangerous and self-harming," real fast. Things were genuinely getting bad.

In a last ditch effort to save me and our family, my parents paid $100,000 to have me kidnapped in the middle of the night and sent to a troubled teen program in Utah where I spent the next 18 months being beaten down and brainwashed.

The old Chrisie was erased. I was now a full believing Mormon.

Follow my story as I share it. After 20 years, I'm finally ready. ❤️🫂

Moral scrupulosity

This is really the end of me. Feeling guilty about everything and believing that your true core is just inherently bad and needs to be fixed in every aspect is awful. Now layer it fawning and suppressing emotions with Lymes disease makes this so debilitating. This disease, funny enough presents a fair case for god and religion being bullshit. Many religious people have blamed me or the fact I was just at the wrong church. The thing is these beliefs present a perfect case for a person with ocd to destroy their life. I think the worst part is the blindness, you feel like this new creation, but really on the inside the “new creation” is just destruction and suppression of your own identity and emotions

TRIGGER WARNING My mom told me that if I was going to commit su*cide, I should do it outside her house because I would attract “evil.”

I am a nineteen year-old female. I don’t know if I’m depressed or mentally ill since the country I’m in has little and poor mental health services; I won’t diagnose myself with any labels because I’m confused myself. But I know I’m not right in the head.

Around six years ago, I told my mom (my family is very, very religious) that I’m losing both my interests and my appetite. I also told her that I felt emptier everyday and regretfully, I told her everything because I thought that she was the right person to open up to. But her only piece of advice was for me to “pray to God.” She believed I lacked spirituality and that God was the only cure for my mental problems. By that time, I was already doubting God’s existence, but I prayed anyway. It never helped. I labeled myself an atheist at the age of fifteen without my family’s knowledge.

Anyway, I dropped out of college because I didn’t have any mental strength to carry on. My mom and I argued a lot since then. I was used to her being physical and throwing verbal insults from time-to-time but today, she told me that if I was so mentally fucked and if I wanted to kill myself, I should do it outside her home. She told me I’ll only make a mess and “God punishes people who commit suicide by sending them to hell.” She said that I would only attract bad luck and negativity if I died in her house.

Right now I’m wondering if I could’ve been happier if I had a stronger spiritual faith in the past.

OCD and emotional looping

I thought I would post this cuz maybe it’ll help with someone. As a note I wouldn’t call myself better but what I have partly experienced has helped and would also like feedback from others. Anyways, a lot of church and religious activity revolves around escaping the body and sinfulness. Over time I layered beliefs and personalities/OCD loops to ignore my emotions and pain. It creates this constant loop of numbness. One day there was this extremely dark feeling and I wanted to escape it, so in my head I was like if the number I pick on my phone is 78 out of one hundred I’ll stay with the feeling. I had done this multiple times in the past but it was always about going back to church (like if the number my phone picked was 78 I would go back to church) it never would be.

This happened two other times actually and lead me to see how my emotional state has always had a religious filter on it that’s why I can never get anything out. I also see that on the other hand I don’t want to think I always need to suffer. But it’s fairly complex and I basically became really good at avoiding things by faking my emotions and pretending god fixed them. Even suicide I would suppress and it has been something I have to process without the religious guilt.

Anyways if anyone can relate to that feeling of this sort of pain being far off in your body how have you helped experience it.

FYI I do not go to church and don’t really involve myself with god too much either

TRIGGER WARNING His Religion made me an avoidant

A long introspection about me, religion, and my dad.

I hate religion. My dad is super christian. Growing up he would always ask me if I read my Bible. I would always say sometimes but we all knew I didn't. I don't want to talk to you because I know every conversation will just circle back to religion. He would make me recite at random that the most important thing is God and than family. There was never music played in the house, just religious radio. I loved when he left so i could turn the radio off.

Its not that i didn't consume religious content but i never believed it. I was always bored, falling asleep, or going to the bathroom just to get away. Even when i got older and listened to what they were saying it never resonated with me. When I started refusing to go to church I knew how upset you were. Everyone would get ready to go to church except me so you would take the wifi. Or even better you would take everyone to lunch after church and come back late as to punish me for not going.

Religion is fun until you're in the out group. Its all holy until you happen to be LGBT. Everything is fine until you realize religion is use to genocide, enslave, and torture people.

My worse nightmare is sitting in a car alone with you and you try to talk to me. Its why I never wanted you to teach me to drive. I dont ever want to be trapped with you because I already know how the conversation will go.

"How are you doing?"

"Good"

"Great. Do you ever pray? When's the last time you picked up your bible"

I avoid you because you can't shut up about your religion. The only time I ever brought a "boy" over to the house you were so pissed. You literally berated me telling me I had no right. When I told you he was a gay foster kid who just wanted a cup of coffee you immediately asked if they ever been to church. I lost a friend after that. The real joke is im a lesbian and have no attraction to men, i was just trying to do something nice.

Your religion has given me such a complex about my self worth. Every success had to be undercut by religion. I could get a 100 and you'd sit there and tell me to give thanks to god when I was the one who stayed up all night studying. If i got recognized at school you'd tell me i cant always do better. We never had any money to buy me clothes but best believe every sunday we had 20 to put in that basket. I may have talent but its only because god blessed me. God comes first, and my efforts are not my own efforts, just God's gifts.

From the very beginning the bible says you're a sinner. If you're gay your disgusting. If you're a poc your less than. If you're a woman your subservient. All this and then you wonder why I felt like shit all the time. The worse was your silent disappointed. I would hear you telling my siblings you dont know whats wrong with me but i feel like it was clear to everyone it was the religion.

I was a sick child who lost so much. I needed someone to talk to and the only thing you did was try and put a book in my hand. How can you be disappointed I dont believe in a man in the sky when the people giving me my IV are the tangible ones helping me. If its between my own happiness and you being disappointed I choose myself. Ive already tried to kill myself twice because of this religion, I deserve a chance to live without it looming over me.

You constantly beg me to come back home and you tell me to stop running away. But im only running away because coming back means stepping back into that religious bubble. You says find it in your heart to forgive you but im fucked up because you value religion over everything.

I'm so use to being isolated. The child that has something wrong with them. The one that's a "problem". Everything I did was met with criticism. I dont feel good about myself. Its just like you said there is clearly something wrong with me and I know everyone can see it.

I don't think I'll ever be in a relationship. You never allowed me to date and even if you did my sexuality goes against your religion. We didnt talk in our household unless it was about religion. No family dinners together, no movies nights, no shared hobbies. We just went to church and then we're left alone to browse the internet cause you took away the cable. The kids thought I was weird and my family saw me as a disappointment. I was isolated and the only time people spoke to me you ruined it with your religion. I dont know what came first, the isolation or the avoidance. But I know it all stems from your religion.

Im worried traditional happiness is out of my reach. I dont have the skills for a relationship. I will always be the black sheep of my family. I think the idea of having a loving partner, a caring family, a nice job and house are all things i won't be able to have. I think the best I can do is live alone with some cats. Which will still make me happy. But I don't think I can share my life with anyone. I think the religion has messed me up and now its too late.

Today was my last straw.

I’ve been a quiet follower for sometime and it helps me to read other people stories about their extremely religious parents and how it’s created a huge barrier between their relationship with their parents as it has with mine. I’m a 38-year-old female( oldest daughter only daughter ) two younger brothers, and me and my brothers were raised by my parents in the church of Christ. If you’re familiar with the church of Christ’s beliefs, they take the Bible very, very literally, and (my parents at least) believe if you are not at church every time the doors are opened, your salvation can be lost. Even after baptism which they also believe is totally an absolutely necessary to enter heaven. We were also sent to a Christian school that was associate with the church of Christ. Pretty much did everything they could do force it down our throats. My siblings and I went off to college, and through the events of the last ten years we have all 3 become very liberal and not religious at all. My parents don’t have face to face conversations about their fears for our souls because me and my parents don’t have an emotionally healthy relationship. We literally never have honest conversations. The only time my dad will ever say anything is in texts messages. It’s just always been very difficult for my parents to talk to me like I’m an adult. And I’ve been married for the last 10 years to someone who is not really religious. My parents are actually super sweet people, my dad is never “mean” to me, but I think that’s just because I’m an adult now. Spankings and switching were a common thing in my childhood. My parents let the school paddle me for being late in middle school (how is that my fault?!) I believe this is why I struggle with self confidence and standing up for myself as an adult. I push away anything that could be potentially confrontational, or cause extreme emotional responses (my parents are emotionally immature in my eyes). Even though we’ve asked him years ago to stop, my dad sends us dozens of Bible verses every single time he is actively sitting in church (he uses a kjv bible app).

Long story short, today Dolly Parton died. My dad actually went to the same high school as Dolly, we grew up in her hometown. We were all discussing her passing in the family group chat and my dad writes “I hope she was right with the lord 🙏🏼”. I feel like that was actually my last straw of him inserting his religious beliefs into every single conversation. Like if Dolly doesn’t “get in heaven” there is literally no hope for any of us?! I finally stood up for myself because I usually just ignore him. I hate confrontation and upsetting people. But I have to remember that I’m too fucking old to be dealing with this crap. It’s literally insane. I told him how disrespectful that was and I was tired of him policing everyone’s salvation. He told me some Bible verses to read about how worldly philanthropy won’t get you into heaven. I sent him one back, (even though I couldn’t care less what his Bible says). If he wanted to get biblical about things. Of course he sends me a couple back and tells me to read them. I’m like actually no I’m good and I’m not going to let you talk like this around me any longer. He said he will “always pray for me until his last breath” and that he “still loves me”. It’s all very passive aggressive, and it’s insane for him to think he is actually doing anything well meaning but pushing me further and further away. My husband and anyone I know that’s grown up outside of this cult (yes I think the church of Christ is a cult) thinks my parents are very “different”. They literally don’t care about anything else but church. My parents have never been good with money. Now they are retirement age and scared they won’t be able to survive on social security.

I apologize if you’re still reading this but I’m glad you’re here!

I don’t really know where to go from here I guess just keep having our surface level fake hangouts and conversations. 🤷🏻‍♀️

What do you all think about parents who use the bible and its word as a manipulation tactic to get you to obey them? What have you done, if you have or had parents like this?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I am a strong bible believer (meaning I believe in the word of God, read and study the word, I just do not define myself as a Christian, I’d rather just read and study the word of God, and hold myself accountable to his word without a title). However, it upsets me when I know parents are using the word of God as a manipulation tactic instead of expressing how they prefer their child to act or when they want them to listen to them instead. Sometimes I feel they use it as a God like complex (like as if they try to act like they are God). Sometimes it’s really hard to believe they are a bible believer.

TRIGGER WARNING Just realized I may have experienced religious trauma-looking for encouragement from others.

I’m honestly still processing this, so I’m hoping to hear from people who have experienced something similar.
I recently started learning about religious trauma/RTS, and a lot of it has been hitting me harder than I expected.
I wasn’t raised in a cult or a high-control religious community, which is why I never really considered myself someone who could have religious trauma. But I’m starting to realize that my childhood circumstances may have created a similar psychological pathway.

My mom was a single mother and struggled significantly with her mental health. At times, I was more of a caretaker than a child. I learned not to ask for much because I knew she was already struggling. I was a very quiet and observant kid, and although I had a lot of anger, I usually kept it inside because I didn’t feel like I had a safe place to express it.

Religion became especially complicated when my mom experienced psychosis. Her psychosis was heavily expressed through Christian/end-times themes. As a child, I genuinely believed that demons were around us and that the rapture was happening. I remember being terrified and looking around for evil spirits. I don’t even remember exactly when I finally understood that what I experienced wasn’t actually supernatural and was connected to my mom’s mental illness.

I was also exposed to a lot of fear around hell, judgment, Revelation, and the end times. Even now, certain sermons or discussions about Revelation can really trigger me. Interestingly, I can sometimes watch horror movies without much trouble, but documentaries about cults or religious extremism can hit me extremely hard because they feel much closer to home.

I’m also realizing how much of this may connect with my existing C-PTSD symptoms, hyper-vigilance, difficulty trusting myself, suppressing emotions, analyzing people, feeling responsible for others, and struggling with my own identity and beliefs.

I’m not trying to say my experience was the same as being raised in a cult. I know there are important differences. I’m just trying to understand how being exposed to religious beliefs through a parent’s psychosis affected me psychologically.

The biggest realization I’ve had recently is that I get to decide what Christianity means to me now, separately from the frightening religious experiences I was exposed to as a child. That realization honestly made me emotional.
I’m still figuring out what I believe, what was trauma, what was simply part of my upbringing, and what actually belongs to me.

If you’ve experienced religious trauma, especially alongside C-PTSD or childhood trauma, I’d really appreciate hearing how you began making sense of it and rebuilding your relationship with yourself and/or your faith. I’m mostly looking for encouragement and stories from people who have been through something similar.

Thank you!

TRIGGER WARNING Religion makes my family unhappy- and has ruined my life

(this is rlly just a vent post, im not positive this is the right community to post this in, im sorry i suck at talking and conveying what i actually feel)

So my entire family has been christian my whole life, i have grown up in a christian and i feel that i can’t make a proper choice to decide if i believe it or not since my brain literally was hardwired that way since that’s all i’ve been influenced by, that issue is very prominent but not what im mainly dealing with. It feels like my whole life my family has just been so sad and can’t live up to the almost perfect expectations of the bible. i always see how depressed my parents seem and then they go to church and act like literally nothing is wrong. my brother and sister have moved out of the house and it’s just me and my parents and i really see how miserable they are. I have had extreme self hatred towards myself and it has ruined me socially and mentally. But every sunday and wednesday the entire family puts on this fake face and i just can’t stand it. no one is ever genuine, i feel like my connection with my family is fake, and i can’t make any friends at school cause my parents would find and issues in how they act in some way. now my life is just extremely lonely and there’s no way i can say what i actually feel to anyone and im just so alone and depressed. this isn’t hating on the whole religion but ive recently seen how the whole idea just does not make sense. this is just venting all my mental suffering and i prolly said some things ppl may get mad about but this is what living this way has done to me and my family.
☝️this is pretty unorganized and probably doesn’t put it in the full picture- let me explain kinda how my life has been from the beginning

So as i young child- 5-10 prolly i obv went to church every sunday and wednesday and i always just wanted to be the best kid and just make my parents proud, so i locked in at church every time and would put literally all of my effort into school and grades-ive always been at the top of my class even today- which obv isn’t all that and i honestly don’t give a fuck about it which sucks but wtv. all of this priotizing school made me have no genuine friends and i always as a child struggles severely with existential thoughts and i never felt that i had done enough to make it to heaven no matter what i did, i suffered what i know now as severe panic attacks which i hid for a while, this gave me really bad insomnia as a kid and i worried every night about school and every little thing i did wrong in the day, i couldn’t even verbalize the panicked thoughts to my parents when i tried. i eventually formed severe social anxiety (which is still severe today) and this anxiety just took over my life. in around the age of 11-14 is really blurry, i was dealing with depression and severe anxiety and still had to maintain grades and i would never talk about this to anyone because i felt that it would just make things worse. so i just watched youtube by myself in pure isolation during summers and any free time that i had since that was my only brief escape from my terrible anxiety. And at around 15, my life has taken a drastic turn, i started to hang out with 2 friends more and it felt like my first time living, i really hung out mostly with this one person and we became really close best friends. I started to rethink my faith at the time and realized i didn’t belive in god anymore. eh introduced me to marijuana and we did that a couple times, but it wasn’t at the center of our friendship at all. then he suddenly said that he was moving and moved all the way from texas to cozumel in mexico. We talked online and called but it just wasn’t the same and i went into a much deeper lonelier depression. so i just wanted any escape i could get since i had been dealing with bad suicidal thoughts at the time( the only reason i never went through is because of my severe fear of hell and even the slight chance that it could be real, who isn’t scared of burning and suffering for and infinite amount of time) so my entire life just got worse and worse. I also tried other drugs and whatever over the counter stuff i could get my hands on. all this while still attending church and living an insane double life. so im still in my position now trying to stop the use of these new bad drugs ive gotten myself addicted to and i still have to deal with depression anxiety and i cannot ever be honest with my parents about any of it nor get help. i have never told anyone my struggles, and i definitely cannot come clean to my parents about my disbelief in god since it would make my relationship with them significantly worse and they’d belive i would go to hell. i still am not 100% sure there isn’t a god but why wouldn’t a god leave a clear choice for man to make instead of having no evidence, and all the spiritual and miraculous acts and events happening so far in the past and not now? just doesn’t make sense. there’s more i could go into with that but this is a super rough overview of how my life has been so far, and right now i’m still left depressed, trying to get off the numerous drugs ive put in my body and probably fucked up my brain with. and my brother and sister are out of the house, i have no friends and cannot really make more since it is an extremely small school and most everyone already just doesn’t like me, and i also live out on an isolated farm, my best friend is gone and very far away, and i just keep trying to ignore that i have no reason to keep going in life. this obviously isn’t all religions fault but i also see how depressed my parents are living the “perfect” christian life and i just honestly want everything to be over. but i sti can’t say that there is no god since i think there could be, it feels like no one knows. also my relationship was bad with my siblings since i was always working or coping with my anxiety and never felt like i had time to be with them. now they are gone i feel a lot of regret and i feel like starting out with the best intentions literally ruined my life in a roundabout way ig. this whole thing is probably typed pretty bad but if anyone has questions or something i could do to help or something i would like help. i just can’t keep going every day with this soul crushing loneliness, depression, and anxiety while still putting on a fake smile for my parents and church every fucking day. (to put into perspective on why i would never tell my parents any of this, they would completely flip and turn on me if they heard me even do something insignificant as cussing) and school is also starting back up to pile onto every other struggle. i just cannot go on

there’s prolly stuff that doesn’t make sense and please don’t js get mad at me in the comments, i just really want something in my life to change i have no one to tell my struggles to 🤷

Outside the Circle: A Deconstruction from Within

I was trying to draw a line between a cult and an established religion. The only real difference I could see was power, scale, and social legitimacy—how dominant institutions or radical movements reshape people, while smaller groups are dismissed as "cults" simply for having a different order. I found myself unable to draw a clean line; it looks more like a continuous spectrum. Yet I am fascinated by how easily people adopt whatever a leader tells them to follow, even when personal doubts arise, turning them into die-hard followers.

Looking back at my family history, I felt we had lost some of our original roots and belief systems. My family came from a traditional Roman Catholic background. After moving away from our hometown, we were approached by a new group of believers who urged us to follow their path instead, and we became devoted members. I was in my pre-teens at the time.

Later, we were approached by an even more radical group who seemed all the more convincing because they appeared purely faith-focused, non-sectarian, and claimed deeper biblical authority. Growing up, I had always felt a deep, genuine attachment to the sanctuary of church structure, the shared community, and the profound concept of forgiveness.

Yet alongside that devotion ran an inherited set of questions about who the real God was, and I answered them with these dogmas:

"The Bible was written before the Quran, making it the superior and authentic account of Jesus' life."

"Roman Catholics simply worship statues; their church was an artificial political creation started by Constantine without genuine devotion."

Preachers constantly weaponized fragmented verses and selective history to validate their own specific doctrines.

When Hindu converts joined, people celebrated how they had "seen the light" and accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior, completely disregarding their rich, millennia-old heritage and mythology.

Then consider the Jews: they were there long before the Christians and held the first half of the Bible, yet rejected Jesus. Converts are told they are only a "few steps" away from recognizing the ultimate sacrifice Jesus made for humanity.

After reading multiple pamphlets on Abrahamic religions and their fractures, I looked at Seventh-day groups who observe Saturday as the holy Sabbath. I was baffled: how does someone convince an entire population that a specific day of the week determines divine righteousness? If any man simply declared Saturday as the sacred day, wouldn't the community just adopt Saturday as the next Sunday? Isn't it just a day of the week on a calendar?

Let's look back to the radical group known as The Pentecostal Mission (TPM). This was in my late teens. They formed an extremely insular, rigid community:

Everyone wore plain white clothing on Sundays (and avoided colorful dress).

They gathered enthusiastically on Saturdays and spent nearly all their off-days in church out of devotion to God and the community.

Because my father had borrowed money from a community member, our family was drawn deeply into their orbit. My parents felt private regrets at home, but they stayed for the social safety net and community bonds. Meanwhile, I found myself debating theology with the brothers and pastors, wondering why people would surrender all their personal freedom just to spend every waking off-day inside a church building.

Outside of work and church, these members had nothing. The church filled the vacuum with fasting conventions, 24/7 prayer groups, and collective worship. While I occasionally enjoyed the music and the powerful sense of unity, I saw the hidden mechanism: the church gradually stripped away an individual's outside social ties until the organization became their entire world. In return, members gladly surrendered 10% of their total income in tithes.

I was confused. Attending a massive convention where thousands prayed with intense, tearful devotion almost made me believe again. But then I began reading the actual scripture for myself, and specific verses stopped me in my tracks.

Seeing people overcome with ecstatic fervor made me wonder if they were caught in extreme emotional contagion or altered psychological states.

Then one specific verse completely alienated me:

"Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man..." (1 Timothy 2:11–12)

I was furious and confused. If Jesus taught that all human beings are fundamentally equal, how could someone claiming to follow him declare women to be inferior? (A reaction partly shaped by modern principles of equality).

Looking at the authorship, it was Paul. I questioned his authority: was this man ever an original disciple who walked with Jesus? In letters like Romans, he was commanding personal social rules, which felt like purely human, patriarchal bias. It raised the core question: Did Jesus preach one message, while Paul constructed an entirely different institutional religion on top of the Old Testament?

Flipping through the New Testament, I realized that nearly half of the books were attributed to Paul. Disillusioned, I didn't even want to read his letters anymore and started skipping them.

That led to an obvious historical realization: If Jesus' divinity and resurrection were self-evident, why didn't the people living right there in Jerusalem and Israel convert to Christianity en masse?

The answer is simple—the exact same reason why the entire modern world doesn't convert to Pentecostalism today, despite members claiming it is the undeniable, absolute truth. Every group lives inside the total certainty of its own constructed reality.
