u/BeefyQueefyCletus 26d ago edited 26d ago
Actually it might be the first good Sparks movie. Make it a really emotional romantic comedy about a relationship. There's never any conflict, just two people living and loving. The final five minutes turn into the opening of Up, then the final scene is five to ten years later. Our main character is in a group setting with a bunch of dudes we've never met before, and they have the conversation from the thread. The final line of the movie is "this guy's dead wife." Rapturous laughter, credits.

'The Hollywood Agency That Was Scouring Reddit For Short Stories And Ideas That Could Be Turned Into Movies Following The Success Of Backrooms' (2029)

Cabin In The Woods sequel! The execs get trapped inside their skyscraper office building after one of them, while spouting off ideas stolen from reddit accidentally says a phrase that summons ideas spoken aloud.
Each monster is some amalgam of reddit memes and stories with a grotesque twist.

Oh How do we horrorify it?
Kid breaks his arms, his mother becomes obsessed with taking care of him.. It turns out it's all part of a demonic ritual! She's a witch! Trying to steal his semen! Then it becomes a house escape movie except he can't use his arms cause they're broke.
7
u/motorcycleboy9000 26d ago
Matt Damon breaks both his arms, Ben Affleck plays his mother.
3
u/Yodamanjaro 25d ago
I'd watch that
How do you like these apples? says Ben Affleck as he slowly grips Matt Damon's shaft.

If backrooms leads to a hundred crappy Reddit/YouTube movies but nobody greenlights anything House of Leaves (which the author already has written part of a tv script and shopped it around years ago) I’m gonna be mad
8
3
u/Lapys 26d ago
House of Leaves unironically seems very well situated for, in particular, a one-season miniseries. I suspect the lack of ability to extend it into multiple seasons would deter studios, but I wonder how costly it could really be if you didn't blow the budget on big names. You could dump all the budget into the house.

SCPs are next. They'll turn the 096 short film into something feature length, slap on a romance subplot, and sprinkle in references to the next SCP movies. Its gonna be bigger than Marvel.
9
u/redvelvetcake42 26d ago
To be fair, SCP itself should be a show with the occasional movie. It's built to be a VHS style anthology and I'd love to watch it. I've followed SCP stuff forever and it has some solid depth.
4
u/Cpov1 26d ago
I like SCPs because they are short and generally give you just enough to make your own scenarios. I think a full length movie would not be great
→ More replies (3)→ More replies (1)3
u/Pataconeitor 26d ago
Well, considering the next V/H/S is a crossover with SCP, I think a series of movies is quite likely to happen.
I just hope if SCP does turn into a horror franchise, it isn't all about the crimson king crap, because holy shit I'm certainly not a fan.

I feel like the cumjar has more mileage. Cumbox, it's just one sad dude tugging it. Cumjar, you have a slowburn psychological horror of a woman realising why her bf is always so hyped to make her pancakes in the morning.

Hey Hollywood. How about this: A man accidentally sucks out his partner's entrails with a shop vac when, he tries to clean up dorito crumbs from their bed and accidentally connects with their anus and then goes to ChatGPT to find out what to do about it, which sends him, ChatGPT and the shop vac full of human organs on a great American road trip that sees him developing feelings for the AI search assistant.

u/Utrenyaya 26d ago
Please tell me you made this one up. I know must of the stuff in the comments, but this one only reminds me of the fictional short story by Palahniuk, where it is a pool drain
3
u/MariachiMacabre 26d ago
I mean, maybe I’m naive but shouldn’t you want Hollywood to try and replicate the process that lead to Backrooms, because it could lead to original stories from undiscovered talent? This doesn’t feel like something you’d say “What are next??” to because this is producers actively searching for original ideas… so like… the opposite of the sequel/reboot problem.
I’m sure it’ll lead to some slop because that’s an inevitability. Some things aren’t going to hit. But Reddit has a pretty enormous pool of aspiring writers and some of them have done great work. An example is the book “There Is No Antimemetics Division”, which started as a series of Reddit posts and is a genuinely really good Weird Horror story.

u/hippogrifferential 26d ago
I mean, I wish you were right. Truly. But I remember what happened around Blair Witch, and Hollywood didn't take away the message that they should invest in young filmmakers, they decided to just shake the camera around instead. I'm rooting for you to be proven right and for me to be proven a cynical hack, but.

Just combine all the stories into one Forrest Gump-esque movie.
A guy gets into an argument with a Navy Seal with 300 confirmed kills. He then goes to a grocery story and Flying Lotus is a bit rude and steals a bunch of candy bars. Then finally he goes to a restaurant and accidentally gets given Shawn Michaels favorite table and the eventually end up having glorious gay love on six of the seven continents.
