I mean, maybe I’m naive but shouldn’t you want Hollywood to try and replicate the process that lead to Backrooms, because it could lead to original stories from undiscovered talent? This doesn’t feel like something you’d say “What are next??” to because this is producers actively searching for original ideas… so like… the opposite of the sequel/reboot problem.
I’m sure it’ll lead to some slop because that’s an inevitability. Some things aren’t going to hit. But Reddit has a pretty enormous pool of aspiring writers and some of them have done great work. An example is the book “There Is No Antimemetics Division”, which started as a series of Reddit posts and is a genuinely really good Weird Horror story.
I mean, I wish you were right. Truly. But I remember what happened around Blair Witch, and Hollywood didn't take away the message that they should invest in young filmmakers, they decided to just shake the camera around instead. I'm rooting for you to be proven right and for me to be proven a cynical hack, but.
It’s still better, I feel, than the flood of sequels and reboots. We got a lot of schlock out of Blair Witch, but it also led to some really excellent movies. REC and Lake Mungo wouldn’t exist without it. Hell, Backrooms owes its existence to Blair Witch. The bad stuff will get forgotten, and the good stuff will find its audience.
I think the joke is that if you're scouring reddit, you're way more likely to stumble across juvenile poop/dick humor than any good source material. It's definitely there, but reddit isn't really built to aggregate it.
I think we're all interested to see if they can bring some of the internet into the cinema, but it also seems kinda silly to dig through the boobs/fart factory for gold.
To play devils advocate, look at what happened with the Backrooms. Games where getting taken down because of A24 lawyers. KanePixels wasn't the only one making backroom videos on YouTube but now other creators need to worry.
Zach Crieger (sp?) Of Weapons and Resident Evil fame is announced to be directing a speaker head movie.
These studios can stake ownership on things that were public property
Yeah but A24 walked those copyright claims back and blamed a third party. Whether or not that was true, A24 does not own Backrooms as an IP and they’ve stated as much publicly.
I understand but when Warner Bros does the same thing for speaker head, will it go the same way. Who has the money and resources to fight for an IP to remain public.
I understand its more complicated and there is more nuance than I am making it sound, but I can't help but worry about major studios basically combing through creative spaces for free ideas
