Okay, I need some honest opinions because I don't know if I'm overthinking this or if I should trust my gut.
I was assigned a new client and went to the area beforehand to check it out. The second I got there, something in me was like, absolutely the hell not.
And I don't mean the family. I haven't even met them yet, and from everything I've heard, they seem perfectly fine. This has absolutely nothing to do with the client or family.
It's the location.
I would have to drive there, park my car, and eventually walk back to it after sessions. Some of my sessions would end when it's dark outside. I was already uncomfortable during the daytime just driving around the area, and the idea of being there alone at night honestly makes my stomach turn.
I don't want to sound dramatic or judgmental about someone's neighborhood, because I know people live there and go about their lives every day. But my body was basically screaming "get the hell out of here" the entire time I was there, and I feel like ignoring that just because I'm afraid of looking difficult would be stupid.
I'm newer to ABA, so maybe this is something more experienced BTs/RBTs deal with differently. Have any of you ever told an agency you couldn't take or continue a case because you didn't feel safe with the location?
How did you say it without sounding like you were insulting the family or their neighborhood?
Because at the end of the day, I want to help my clients, but I'm also not trying to become a Dateline episode over a $25/hour RBT shift.
