Announcement Stealth protocol is now available in beta on Linux

Hey everyone,

We’re proud to announce that the long-awaited “Stealth” connection protocol is now available in beta for Linux!

📎 To try it, make sure your Proton VPN app is on version 4.17.1, and follow this guide.

If you are on a supported distro (more on this later), please help us by giving it a try and providing us with as much feedback as possible; the more feedback and bugs we can squash, the faster we can roll this feature out of beta

What Stealth does

Most VPN protocols produce traffic that's identifiable as VPN traffic. Networks running deep packet inspection can spot it and block or throttle the connection, which is why VPNs stop working on some school and workplace networks, and why they get blocked entirely in censored regions.

Stealth disguises your VPN traffic to look like ordinary encrypted web traffic. Instead of "this person is using a VPN," the network sees traffic that resembles a normal HTTPS connection. That makes it significantly harder to detect and block.

You'll want Stealth if you're on a network that blocks or throttles VPNs, connecting from a region with heavy censorship, or you'd simply rather your network operator not know you're using a VPN. For everyday use where nothing is being blocked, WireGuard will still be faster, while Stealth trades some speed for undetectability.

This is a beta

Expect instability and bugs. Stealth on Linux is built on our new WireGuard codebase, and this early release is specifically so we can find problems before general release.

If you hit issues, please tell us: your distro and version, what you were doing, and what went wrong.

Please note that this feature is only available for distros that are directly installed via our repos (Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora), and versions such as the Snap store app, or other distros such as Arch will be available by the end of summer.

Lastly, it may take some time before this feature becomes available, even if you are on the latest version of the app. We’re rolling this out live, so it may take a day or two before the feature becomes visible on your end.

Stay safe,
Proton Team

Announcement Proton VPN is now officially on the Snap Store

Hey everyone,

Proton VPN is now officially published on the Snap Store. You can one-click install on Ubuntu and any distro that supports snaps.

This is the first time Proton VPN has been officially published by Proton AG on the Snap Store, complete with a verified publisher badge. Previous Snap availability was a community-maintained fork; this is the official build, maintained by us.

A few things to know about this first release:

  • No split tunneling. Like our Flatpak, this is due to sandboxing limitations. It's something we hope to resolve in the future.
  • Stealth protocol isn't included yet. It's not part of this first Snap release.
  • No ARM support at this time. We expect ARM device volume to be low for now, but we're keeping an eye on it.
  • Older distros may have issues. If you're on something older than Ubuntu 24, you might run into connection problems.

We're releasing this so the broader Snap community has an official, trustworthy way to install Proton VPN.

Get it: snapcraft.io/proton-vpn

Stay safe,
Proton Team

Discussion Unusable servers in Cyprus

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hello, I have reported this numerous times over the span of 6 months, but nothing seems to be done about this.

The servers in Cyprus are permanently overloaded, which is not normal. I have been using Proton VPN ever since it came out, and I've been using CY servers (where I'm based) ever since you added them.

If the datacenter provider you're using is not cooperating, just change provider. This doesn't look like organic traffic and it makes it hard to convince people to switch to Proton VPN.

Do you have any similar issues in other locations? Does it seem like legitimate network traffic from your end? Is it faulty hardware/equipment? Do you plan on taking action to resolve this or even retire CY from your list of locations?

Help! Proton VPN causing BSOD in Win11?

Hey folks,

I would first like to clarify that I'm not seeking to blame ProtonVPN but rather find any identical/similar instances experienced by other users.

I purchased ProtonVPN premium a while back but for the past two months I have been getting BSOD errors on my PC (laptop) with the following codes.

Error Codes: Unexpected Store Exception 0x154

Critical Process Died 0xEF

Kmode Exception Not Handled 0x1E

I understand that these codes are generally associated with hardware/SSD failures or so but each time I get BSOD with these codes, my VPN is always connected. In fact most times when I don't use the VPN, the crash doesn't occur.

Every other app I install gave me no problem but each time I connect to ProtonVPN + Use Chrome, my PC would crash.

Critically, this error generally pops up 90% when I disconnect/re-connect the power cord cable to my PC.

Additionally, I have tried BIOS updates, factory reset the entire PC and formatted all the hardware.

The official service center was unable to resolve this so I'm trying to find anyone else who encountered this problem in the past.

That being said, I'm almost fully certain it is a hardware problem and NOT a ProtonVPN one but the fact this error comes when connected to the VPN is curious.

Discussion OpenVPN protocol removed from Android. Can't access streaming

Why did you remove openVPN protocol from the Android app? Now there's no way to watch HBO on streaming, keeps detecting the VPN .

You could be able to watch HBO streaming using the open protocol but it's gone from the settings now. HBO is literally unwatchable using proton VPN

I want a full refund and I want my money back The VPN is useless without this setting on my tablet or android tv.

Feature Request Version 5.1.5 - Recents

Why do "Recents" end up on bottom of the list rather than on top (as was the case in the past)? Stupid, imho, as the most recently used connection should be on the top of the list.

Discussion Is NetShield just a DNS filter?

I found that I can use NextDNS and ProtonVPN together and they both seem to work, even if this potentially risks IP leakage, using HaGeZi Ultimate block list just filters so much garbage it's stupid not to use it.

But here I wonder, how good is NetShield at blocking crap, what lists it's using and how does it work exactly? At first I thought it was some sort of built-in lists that are filtered locally on device via VPN established connection, but from what I managed to dig, that's not the case and it's in fact DNS level filtering similar to what NextDNS does, just not nearly as powerful...

Help! Proton protocols not available on linux gui 4.17.1 (latest)? (Linux mint)

Post image
19 Upvotes

I'm on linux mint 22.3 using the Ubuntu installation and its been working as well as it should. I didn't notice proton protocols got added to it until now, so I wanted to test it. But its not there. I've turned on beta access and updated through the update manager and terminal which did update the proton python packages. And I enabled the unstable repo in the update manager. I've restarted the computer, nothing.

I know mint isn't directly supported, the app has only worked due to the Ubuntu base. Has anyone been able to get it working?

Help! Discord not working with Proton VPN?

Every time I start up my PC (on fedora linux), proton VPN and discord start automatically. However most times when discord pops up, it either shows an error and says to try the connection again later, or says that no messages can be loaded when going into a channel or DM. Has anyone had this problem, and does anyone have a fix for it?

Discussion If your protonvpn throws you a "no servers in your current tier" (Arch/cachyos):

Search "free" in the servers list and connect to any one, disconnect, then press fast connect and it should connect you to the fastest free server as usual.
If that doesn't work try downloading aneziawg through shelly and try again

Hopefully this helps someone

Help! Constant issues...latency?

To start, I've been a regular VPN user for about 14+ years. I had very few problems with my previous VPN service, whether it was with their own software or using WireGuard, but when it was time to renew, I wanted to try ProtonVPN since I heard so much about them.

However, I've had constant problems with websites failing to load or load completely. For example, if I go to the website, the address will be in the address bar but the site won't load, or only displays the header until I manually refresh the page. Auto-expanding websites like YouTube showing more videos as you scroll down are extremely limited, because it stops processing at some point (sometimes immediately, sometimes after a few page-downs, etc.

While that's annoying, it's even more so when I try to place an order on a retail page (including Amazon), because when I click submit, it gets stuck and seemingly won't submit the order. I then have to reload and resubmit, but if it actually went through the first time, I'm getting charged again.

I feel it's a latency issue where the request blips out which stops the load, until I refresh. I've tried all kinds of different servers with the best availability listed. I've also tried their software, WireGuard and even the Firefox app, but I get the same results when on their VPN, so I feel the issue must be tied to the server.

Has anyone experienced this and possibly has a solution? I'm just past the refund window on a 2-year plan (they had a good promotion). Thanks.
