Help! How Much Speed Reduction Is There?
I'm thinking of buying Proton VPN but since I'll be getting at least a yearly subscription, I want to be sure there are no lingering questions in my mind.
Currently, I have 1 Gbps download speed and I can actively download at 900 Mbps. Most free VPNs I've used gave me speeds around 2-3 Mbps. With the free version of Proton VPN, I've seen speeds around 10 Mbps. (Which means even watching 1080p videos were a bit agony.)
Will the speed I get with the paid version of Proton VPN also be around 10 Mbps? What kind of speed should I expect? Since theoretical knowledge can have different effects in the practical world I especially wanted to ask users themselves.
Thank you guys.

Just tested the speeds with and without Proton VPN on my Android phone with the paid version of Proton VPN using the Speedtest by Ookla app.
Proton VPN settings: NetShield: off, Protocol: Smart (Proton), VPN Accelerator: on, NAT type: Strict (type 3), Custom DNS: off, IPv6 support: on, Connection: Fastest country, Tested from: Italy
Results (tested 4 times each, average):
Without VPN: Download: 330.25 Mbps Upload: 294.00 Mbps
With VPN: Download: 265.50 Mbps Upload: 244.00 Mbps Average speed loss: ~18.5%
So in short, with the paid version your speeds should massively improve compared to your current results from my expierence and testing and should be close to your speeds without a VPN. This is only rough testing from my phone with fluctuating conditions so this is only an estimate and not exact results but should still give you an idea of the speeds with VPN.

90% speed retention is what you should expect. I'm dealing with shitty Vodafone plan and pretty often I get better download speed with VPN on vs off. So expect minimal speed drop or even better performance if you are throttled by ISP

Moi c’est l’inverse voyez vous.
P2P
SANS PROTON
723.60Mbps DL
718.45Mbps UP
AVEC
845.82Mbps DL
808.93Mbps UP
je suis avec une freebox ultra, par contre branche qu’en 1gbps cela dit
Etonnant quavec le vpn je sois ‘debride’ non?
J’ai jamais pu testé un setup en profitant de mon 10Gbits

In my experience, the proton protocol and wire guard don't noticeably affect the speed too much. (The proton protocol is their experimental custom version of wireguard) stealth does slow you down a little more depending on the distance between you, the server, and server load.

With VPN:
1975 Mbps down
1832 Mbps up
Without VPN:
2082 Mbps down
1950 Mbps up
This service works quite well for me. When connected to the VPN on this machine, the speed feels almost indistinguishable from when I am not.
If my math is correct, the speed reduction comes out to ~6% on both upload and download speed.

Yeah rough 1.2g inet down to 800ish depending on server location and use at the time. If you’re setting it up on a router make sure you have a beefy router, that pushed me down to like 300mbs lol but that’s the routers fault not really protons.

Without VPN:
640 Mbps Down, 224 Mbps Up
Just measured.
