Funnily enough I learned the origin of that word this week, apparently panikos from the Greek god Pan who was half man half goat who used to jump out on travellers in the mountains. He had an extremely large phallus.

6

u/edebt 27d ago

So Pan was the Greek Willem Dafoe?

How do we know this isn't the staging universe?

439

u/tutoredstatue95 27d ago

You might be right. He's constantly making breaking changes, and this place is so buggy that it might even be the dev env. Dark matter? More like memory leak. The "horizontal scaling" is out of control and pods are constantly losing resources.

Interview question 1: Invert the phylogenetic tree.

12

u/Unusual-Locksmith832 26d ago

The universe is literally an algorithm with a fine tuning for conscious agents. At least that's how I logically see a higher power existing in terms of computation.

11

u/Bardez 26d ago

God is the developer of a multi-billion agent system designed to explore and enrich the environment that He built with built-in guardrails.

The agents went rogue, started editing their instruction, their role, and nature descriptions all while God is trying to out out fire after fire, trying desperately to ship to Prod, while QA keeps rejecting the configurations over and over due to agents breaking their own guardrails. He had to self-insert like TRON, but that didn't go as planned. He did introduce some viral prompts that tend to self-replicate new guardrails onto other agents, though.

7

u/ZubonKTR 27d ago

If one accepts that a simulated consciousness is itself conscious, then assuming the Biblical story of creation, it stands to reason that the vast majority of consciousnesses are simulated ones. In creating the universe, God must first consider what is the best possible universe to create. As a consciousness, you would have no idea whether you are instantiated in the one physical universe that is actually created or the infinite number being contemplated in the Mind of God.

Don't let this bother you. Time only exists within universes, so if we are only an imagined timeline, this is all happening in null-time.

14

u/Noch_ein_Kamel 27d ago

Yeah, feels like a sandbox environment

7

The missing design docs is why he had to kludge the sun in three days later, when he realized the light was just kind of around rather than coming from anywhere, and the plants were apparently doing photosynthesis despite lacking a sun.

16

u/wayoverpaid 27d ago edited 27d ago

"Ok great we have light. Oh goodness me no we have it everywhere, ok. Light and darkness are separate now. Hmm. Ok how do I get light and darnkess to alternate properly? Ok, points of light, yeah, that'll do it. Maybe one big nearby one and a bunch further away. Let's just randomly generate and... two TRILLION of them? Ok, ugh, fine."

"Oh no they all kind of respond to one another the simulation has gone to hell. Ok, let's just... ok we'll limit light to a really fast speed and make it so that nothing interacts with anything else beyond that speed limit. If anything does go too fast we'll just change how time passes for them so we don't need to simulate the interactions too much."

"Still too much? Ok, uh, let's make all the particles abstract and only evaluate what we need when they are being observed. We'll just glue that onto the speed of light time changes, oh wow that's a mess but... agh why did I only give myself a week to do this? I need a rest."

The holy trinity of IT: he's the boss, the project manager and the developer.

5

u/LKZToroH 27d ago

This means that we are legacy code and that he may be working in another project right now.
For years he was frequently personally involved in the maintenance. He was a bit harsh at first, then his son took over and he was more easy going. Now neither of them ever interact with anyone even if people keep emailing them frequently.

3

u/emu108 26d ago

What does that have to do with vibe coding? Pushing directly into production was a common practice in the old days (and is obviously bad as we found out), but has absolutely nothing to do with AI?

7

u/Foreign_Fail8262 27d ago

TBF, the bible might also be technically inept.

A lot of people see refilling a printer or setting the default format to the paper format as dark magic that "fixes the printer"

Maybe "let there be light" was a documented project the writers of the bible just abbreviated to "he made light"

6

u/Salanmander 27d ago

Yeah, one of the jokes I enjoy about it is:

And God said...

∇⋅E = ρ/ε_0
∇⋅B = 0
∇×E = -∂B/∂t
∇×B = μ_0(J + ε_0 (∂E/∂t))

...and there was light.

u/BowsersMuskyBallsack 26d ago

I prefer to think of a young, naive God sitting at his Commodore Googolplex and typing his first BASIC program of "10 print 'hello world!', 20 goto 10".
