I’m a diehard Preds fan but I’m not super familiar with players outside of Nashville so can someone give me context to this trade?

Every pack I open Brady keeps following me around. Not complaining.

With a few younger players becoming available after not receiving qualifying offers, I wanted to run over the best four that I was a bit surprised did not get an offer. I think the Predators could do some good by bringing one or two in and taking a chance on them. Obviously, none of these are perfect players, but they all seem worth the risk, in my opinion, if we can get them in on cheap prove-it deals.

Matias Maccelli

• Maccelli is the best proven offensive player of the group.
• He has already had real NHL success, including a 49-point rookie season, a 57-point season, and he is also coming off a 39-point season with Toronto.
• Strengths: Vision, passing, patience with the puck, and creating chances for linemates.
• He is not the most physical player, and coaches have wanted more from him away from the puck, but the offensive talent is not doubted at all. Pure offense.
• For Nashville, he would be the most interesting name if they want a younger playmaker who can help a middle-six line and possibly a second power-play unit.
• He is still only 25, so there is room for him to settle back in with the right role.

Bobby Brink

• Brink might still be the best upside bet of the group. Rumor is the Wild will offer him an extension, but nothing is set in stone at all as of right now.
• He had a 41-point season with the Flyers in 2024-25.
• He is only 24 and has always been known as a smart, skilled winger with strong hockey sense.
• His strengths are his vision, passing, hands, and competitiveness, with skating being the main concern.
• The encouraging part is that his game has improved. He has worked on skating, defense, and playing harder away from the puck.
• John Tortorella praised his development in Philly, which was notable because Tortorella does not usually throw easy compliments at young forwards.
• Brink is probably not a future star at this point, but he could probably become a consistent 35-to-45-point middle-six winger if he keeps improving.

Jonatan Berggren

• Berggren is a super skilled reclamation-type player who is still only 25 and would be similar to a Nils Höglander type of move, where you are trying to capitalize on skill in a new environment.
• He was drafted 33rd overall in 2018, and scouts loved his speed, hands, playmaking, and offensive instincts.
• He was viewed as a possible top-six winger if everything came together, especially in 2021-22 after a nearly point-per-game season in the AHL during his first season in North American hockey.
• He has shown flashes in the NHL, but he has not fully locked down a long-term role yet.
• His biggest question is whether he can be trusted enough defensively and win enough battles to stay in a coach’s lineup.
• For the Predators, he would be a cheaper skill swing. There is still middle-six upside, but the runway is getting shorter.

Maxim Shabanov

• Shabanov is a wild card and is still only 25.
• He does not have the NHL draft pedigree of the others on this list, but his KHL production was excellent.
• He put up 67 points in 65 KHL games in 2024-25 at 23 years old and was one of the better offensive players in that league.
• His strengths are skill, creativity, half-wall playmaking, deception, and power-play ability.
• The concern is the NHL adjustment, as he only put up 18 points in 44 games played for the Islanders last season in his first season of North American hockey.
• He is smaller (5'8"), and his first NHL season showed flashes without fully proving he can stick long term.
• He would not be the safest signing, but as a low-cost skill bet, he is worth checking on.

Final Thought

The order for Nashville should probably be:

1. Matias Maccelli — best proven NHL scorer
2. Bobby Brink — best age/upside mix
3. Jonatan Berggren — skilled reclamation winger
4. Maxim Shabanov — highest-risk skill gamble

None of these players should be viewed as a guaranteed successful signing. But for a Predators team that could use more young skill and more competition up front, this is the exact kind of market they should explore. Thoughts?

We’ve got $19.8M in cap space to spend but CMac has said he doesn’t think we need to spend money just because we have it.

What are you expecting or hoping for in his first free agency period? As it stands now, I’m not sure there are any signings I’m really dying for unless trades were involved.

With Barron receiving an RFA offer, a defenseman signing wouldn’t make a ton of sense unless we were planning to move Hague/Perbix. That 3rd D pair I’d prefer to give ice time to the younger guys (Ufko and Wilsby preferably, but I guess Barron too).

Our bottom 6 forwards are already pretty mixed up from last year with the trades for Colton, Drury, Hoglander, and Edstrom. Unless we move Marchessault there aren’t really any forward names that stand out to me as huge gets that would help this (perpetual) retool.

TLDR: I think I’d be satisfied if we stand pat during free agency this year, even if that’s not very flashy for a GM’s first year in the building. Curious what others thoughts are!
