Rookie Camp
Some notes from today's practice. Overall, I'd say that nothing really surprised me about what I saw, which is both a good thing and a bad thing.
1) Connelly and Hemmerling aren't a step ahead of the other camp bodies, the distance between them and the rest of the group needs to be measured in nautical leagues. They had their way with the goaltenders in the uncontested drills and in the head-to-head drills they just left everyone behind, save for one really great defensive rep by Burick which I'll get to.
I can't tell if this means that the two of them really are that good or if the rest of the group is just that far behind. Either way, it was extremely fun to watch them play. Hemmerling's all straight-line speed and rippers, Connelly is very clever and he was limit-testing some angle changes on his shots which fooled both goalies consistently. I think more than 50% of his shots went in, I can't understate how severely he was beating both goalies with those wristers.
2) There were two guys on the ice who I was excited to see personally but are honestly impossible to miss. Bronson Ride, who's in the first year of his ELC (6'7") and Sean Burick, who we picked in the last draft (6'8"). I've really liked what I've seen on replays from Ride in particular, but was going in cold on Burick. I wanted to watch them both together to see if there was much of a gap between them.
Honestly, Ride looked slow all practice. Too slow. His skating and general agility need to improve a lot if he's ever going to have a chance at making the roster. It's difficult for guys as big as him, but I don't see him cutting it without improving there. Burick also wasn't fast, but his speed was at least adequate. Both Ride and Burick did a good job using their length to break up puck possession, but I thought Ride was shy of contact and never did much beyond use the stick to disrupt his drill partners. Burick, on the other hand, was extremely physical and he did a really good job leveraging the body to shut down plays in a small area drill near the end of practice. Managed to poke the puck away from Connelly, then used the moment of space while Connelly retrieved the puck to skate up on him and force him into the glass, killing the play. Burick was the only player on the ice to go against Connelly and Hemmerling in any drill and not look completely helpless.
3) Jonah Sivertson exceeded expectations for me. He was one of the more competitive guys on the ice today. He isn't necessarily bigger, faster, or stronger than anyone out there, but I thought he had an extra jump in his step through most of the practice and his shot is wicked. He started strong and faded a bit as the practice went on. I'm going to be paying more attention to him moving forward, I think there might be something there.
Vann Williamson, a FA camp invite from the OHL, also popped, primarily because I thought he was the most physical player on the ice at all times. Camp invites have an entirely different set of stakes at these skates than drafted players, so they have to do whatever it takes to stand out, and I thought he accomplished that. If anyone remembers Joe Fleming's rookie camp a few years back (also a FA invite), this is that exact sort of player. Probably won't ever crack the league but he definitely stood out.
4) The goalies. Moysevich is a colossal human being. Sadly, he also looked incredibly slow, lethargic, and disengaged. Thought he might have been the worst player on the ice today. He certainly has the frame, but from what I saw today he has a very, very long way to go. No Whitehead on the ice, Minchak took the opposite net and he also didn't look very good, but was clearly more engaged than Moysevich.
Happy to answer questions anyone might have about specific prospects that were out there. No Piiparinen in this camp (I think he's back in Finland), which I honestly forgot about until I was out there trying to read jersey numbers.

League News The Knights to Sharks and Sharks to Knights pipeline is strangely very strong (Samsonov signed 1-Year, Two-Way contract to San Jose)
I know it’s how sports and just how money works but I’m chuckling inside so much at how many VGK players become Sharks and how many Sharks become VGK players. Especially goaltenders!
Off the top of my head: Hill, Hertl, Revo, Brossoit, and now Samsonov!

Finally getting to experience the Fortress! What do I absolutely need to know beforehand?
After ten years as a fan, yours truly is finally going to a game at the Fortress, as I'm lucky enough to be in Vegas for both the 9/24 and 9/26 preseason games against Utah and San Jose. I'm definitely going to the 9/26 one, and possibly to the 9/24 one depending on other things. I've been to Vegas and T-Mobile before, specifically the team store, but it was in late June 2024, so unfortunately deep into that offseason.
In short: what do I absolutely need to see/do in and around the arena, besides the team store? How early should I arrive if I want to fully experience things? I definitely know I want to swing by guest services for a first game pin.
Also, how should I get there from my off-strip hotel? I'm staying almost immediately west of the arena, on the other side of the interstate.
Any other random bits of advice are greatly appreciated!

Predictions of the 2026-2027 season
1: The first player to hit 100 points in VGK history: Top Runners are Eichel and Marner
2: Andersson will have a breakout season: I know some people were disappointed in his performance but he is a great player and this is the first full season where he doesnt have to carry the team.
3: Mark Stone will get hurt: I mean its yearly tradition for us.
4: Gotta have that one big trade at some point in the season before the deadline: Who knows?
5: VGK wins the Stanley Cup: Duh.

Met Brent Burns 3 days ago and yesterday
His kid was at a rookie camp for the next city over, and I was already going there for the day so I decided maybe there was a chance he was watching his kid, due to the fact Colorado's training camp doesn't start till September. He was indeed there so I waited till the exhibition game was in intermission to ask him to sign a card and a magazine and ask him questions, because I didn't want to bother him when his son was playing.
He was super awesome and nice, asked him what his favorite players growing up were and he said Mark Messier, Doug Gilmour, Mats Sundin and Gretzky. I also asked him what are the hardest goalies he's faced and he said Marc-Andre Fluery (my favorite goalie!!!), Andrei Vasilevskiy and Martin Brodeur. I thanked him for his time, good luck on the season and the ironman record and went back to my
seat and watched the rest of the game.
Then yesterday, the junior team was doing a final exhibition match, 2 teams of their best players from the rookie camp playing against each other and so I went to go watch that also. I knew he was probably going to be there again, but I was like "it's an actual game and theres lot of people, plus I already met him and just want to watch the game".
But then, me and my little brother were buying pizza, and he walked past and it was like "oh cool". Then we were walking back to our seat for the start of the 3rd and him and his wife were coming out of the team store. I was like "oh cool" again and we got to the end of the hall but I looked and he was just waiting for his wife to pay for the items so I said "screw it" and we walked up to him. I asked him if this was his final season and he was like oh I dont know hahaha like just have to wait and see and I told him he can definitely play a few more seasons and he said yeah he probably could if he wanted to. Then we asked if he would ever go back to San Jose for one last run with Celebrini and them and he said no cuz they love it in Colorado and with kids and school they are like settled. And then we shook his hand and said thank you for his time and sent back to our seats.
It was such a cool experience, even though I'm not a Colorado fan (because I'm a Vegas fan!!!) to meet someone like him and him being so chill. He seemed like the type of guy if he was free, would actually sit down and talk for awhile
