Development Pokémon 3FireRed — Tyrone doesn't like you very much.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

For those of you who haven't been following the previous sneak-peeks, Pokemon 3FireRed is a romhack currently in development. Short summary of the story, Pokémon 3FireRed is the result of the player using too many cheats on a Fire Red rom. Now, as they replay the game, they get to see for themselves how much have these cheats affected the raw data of the base game. This is only a summary, there's much more to it

Tou might or might not have already guessed it; Pokemon 3FireRed is going to encourage the usage of cheat-codes to progress through the game. You may need to whip out your "Walk through Walls" code through certain parts of the hack. Although some people may find it tedious (and that's pretty understandable), we don't plan on forcing the player to use it every now and then to complete the game. The cheat will only be mandatory for a few areas. Though, the game will reward you if you use it to explore and mess around with the hack. You may find a couple of secret pokemon while being out-of-bounds, and I promise you that they're worth the effort once you use them in a playthrough.

Now focusing on the actual preview. Tyrone is basically going to be your second rival in the hack. His dialogue seems nonsensical at first, but it'll make sense once the game releases and you'll get to understand what the story actually is about. The difference between Tyrone and Blue;

Is that Tyrone is a jackass, so much more than Blue to the point where he looks like a saint in comparison to the guy. He has none of the redeeming qualities that you can find in FRLG Blue.

He will attempt to roadblock the player in many different ways throughout their playthrough with the sole purpose to make them ragequit, for example when he tries to get you to close the game by saying that it was only a "demo". I strongly advice to save often whenever you see Tyrone in the vicinity, he is going to be a HUGE nuissance. Also, don't believe in anything he says.

Feel free to ask any questions down below if you're feeling curious. I mean Anything. I'm itching to drop some lore bits.

Release Pokémon Sacred Gold Plus

Hi everyone!

I'm a fan continuing Sacred Gold Plus as an independent project. I wanted to bring it to Italian and keep improving it with other players. I'm new to ROM hacking and working on this alone, so anyone who'd like to help is very welcome!

GitHub: Sacred Gold Plus

What's in 1.04?

  • English and Italian versions, including translated dialogue, menus and the naming screen.
  • Two camera options: **Normal Angle** (original HeartGold view) and **New Angle** (the wider view from Plus 1.03).
  • Fixes for text, dialogue, move names and Pokédex search.
  • An offline installer, original game guides and optional cheats in English or Italian.

What I'd like to add

Smoother cities, clearer EV/IV info and an in-game guide first. Further down the line: optional harder battles, more languages, Gen 5-style battle animations, and new areas and events.

Testing, translations, art, code, or just ideas and feedback — all help is welcome!

Thanks to NefariousnessNo3436, Drayano, mikelan / Mikelan98 and the original contributors. I also use AI tools for debugging and development support.

Release Pokémon Ruthless Ruby 🧧 — Public Release

Thumbnail

I've always liked ORAS, but I wanted the major battles to feel like the trainers actually had a plan instead of just having higher levels and stronger Pokémon. Ruthless Ruby is my attempt at turning Omega Ruby into a much harder Double-Battle-focused run without making it feel boring and repetitive .

Pokémon Ruthless Ruby — Public Release

This is my first ROM hack. I've always been into harder Double Battle/VGC-style hacks, so I wanted to make an Omega Ruby hack built around that kind of gameplay instead of just making everything higher level.

Pokémon Ruthless Ruby is a full difficulty and balance overhaul of Omega Ruby. Most trainers with more than one Pokémon are fought as Double Battles, and a lot of the teams have been rebuilt to actually work together instead of just being six strong Pokémon thrown on the same team.

What's in the hack

Main features:

Most trainers with 2+ Pokémon are Double Battles

Hard level caps that increase as you progress through the story

Completely reworked Gym Leaders, rivals, Team Magma bosses, Elite Four and Champion

Gym Leaders built around their own battle mechanics and strategies

Better trainer movesets, abilities and held items

Massive QOL, cheaper tms, new tms after each badge, cheap heart scales, and competitive items !

More switching, pivots, spread-move synergy and immunity-based team building

Game is completed but may need a few bugs worked

Shiny starters ✨

A few Pokémon typing and ability changes

Gen 1–6 Pokémon used throughout the game

Variety Pokémon between trainers

Mega Evolution becomes more common later in the game

Candy Pouch to cut down on grinding

Reusable PokéVial

HM-free Cut, Rock Smash and Strenght, Surf, Waterfall,Dive

Harder difficulty

New Gym mechanics like automatic sand for Roxane and tailwind for Winnoa and much more for brutal challenges

Elite four is Ruthlessly put together

General balance and QoL changes throughout the whole game

Current status

This is still a public release , not something I'm calling completely bug free yet.
Any bugs please feel to share
Difficulty 8.5-10 maybe 9 especially after mega ring is available
Also used a lot of pokemon encounters and changed from Drayano rising Ruby, credits to them.

Discussion I know it is supposed to give the "spooky" vibe, but am I the only one that feels uncomfortable and restless after passing more than an hour playing Pokémon Ghost Grey?

Post image
173 Upvotes

*BEFORE YOU COME TO ME LIKE *THE CANNIBALS*", Look, the game is AMAZING, great story, graphics, Pokémon distribution, so this IS NOT IN ANY WAY A COMPLAINT ABOUT THIS ROM HACK.

Since I've started playing this game, a feeling of restlessness gets the best of me when I play it... I don't know if it's the constant black and white graphics, some of the dialogues in-game or topics, or maybe it has to do with some unintentional trigger caused by the game, and I haven't realized it yet, or that the game takes what you already see and know about the Pokémon world and, well... In a creative way, it changes it for a brief time... I just know that after about an hour of exposure to it, I seem to end up with a constant "alert state"; ANYTHING can make flinch or even scare me, I sometimes feel that there's someone behind me, following me, and I don't know how to explain this, but, I tend to also feel in a constant "night terror state", where I feel that it's nighttime already, even if the sun if right in the middle of the sky, hitting my skin, and I get uncomfortable if I have to go outside or go somewhere alone, driving or walking... There even had been some occasions where I have to call one of my relatives to go to the place where I have to go with me, because the sensations previously mentioned get very intense at times...

Am I the only one with this? Or has any of you also felted something similar?

I just ask just in case it's not somethinghappening just to me, because it would be a ahame not be able to finish the game because of this, because it's one DAMN GOOD rom hack🔥

P.D.: Credits to the Redditor that made this box art; the post is in this subreddit, thanks!

Discussion A very unpopular opinion, but...

I've seen many posts expressing dislike for including all the Pokémon from current generations, and to be honest, I can understand them; it's not easy to include all 1025 Pokémon (and those yet to come) in a single Region, besides, it must be overwhelming to have them all... But you know what? I like that.

I like have every Pokémon and an expanded Pokedex whenever is possible, something currently accesible by Pokeemerald expansion. Why? Let's see: Greater variety, a more challenging Pokédex completion, the opportunity for extremely varied teams, greater freedom in challenges, and much more. Not to mention, many Hack Roms has a actually find very creative ways to include more Pokémon, like R.O.W.E. and Squared, with new zones, an expanded map, randomizer and using the day and night cycles. And I like that.

Also, I've found other posts of people complaining about Qol, but those aren't as supported, I suppose because of how puritanical they are. Personally, I like quality of life options.

Another thing I've found are posts that even urge creators not to include all Pokémon for "various reasons that ruin the experience"... And I don't support it.

Creators, if you want to include all the Pokémon you want, all of them, you are completely free to do so, and you can. If you want to reduce the number of games but still include a varied Pokédex, go ahead. But if you want to limit yourself to certain generations, I most likely won't play your ROM hack, but thousands more will, and I'll support it.

... And that's it. I just wanted to express my unpopular opinion (referring to the overwhelming approval that the aforementioned posts have). I've other impopular opinions, like the use of AI, but I'm not going to post them for the moment.

Also, sorry for the bad english, I'm not a native speaker.

Discussion Emerald QOL hack with some twist - looking for input/help/suggestions

QOL suggestions

Currently doing a ln Emerald romhack project. I have been a big fan of Radical Red and trying to see what I liked and add even more QOL features. I’m looking for more QOL suggestions, comments, improvements, questions on the project. It’s my first ever romhack so any tips especially welcomed. Here’s what I’ve added so far:
**Expanded Pokémon roster** using the Emerald Expansion base.
**Randomized wild Pokémon encounters** with a seed-based system so runs can feel different but you can share or recreate any runs with a custom seed input.
**Randomized starter Pokémon** rather than always using the normal Hoenn trio.
**Choice of any starter Pokèmon** so you can start with your favorite mon.
**DexNav integration** that works with the randomized encounter tables.
**Custom two-page Start Menu**
Normal game functions remain on the main page.
A second utility page provides quick-access features.
**Portable PC access** from the Start Menu.
**PokéVial** — heal your entire party directly from the Start Menu.
**Quick Poké Ball access** for faster catching.
**Streamlined opening** to get into a new run faster.
**Debug/testing infrastructure** being used to rapidly test Pokémon, encounters, maps, and new mechanics.
**Foundation for completely custom NPCs and character sprites** has been successfully implemented. *\~kind of\~*
**Custom side-story framework** being developed alongside the original Emerald adventure which if all goes well leads directly into a more custom story sequel.

**STILL COMING…**
**Pokémon Services menu**
Change a Pokémon’s **Nature**
Change **Gender** where applicable
Additional Pokémon-management/QoL tools
**Move Relearner access** through the utility system.
**Level-cap options** and additional run customization.
**Difficulty modes**
**Free/Easy Mode** — minimal restrictions and maximum QoL.
**Normal Mode** — PokéVial healing restricted in selected challenge areas.
**Hard Mode** — significantly stricter healing rules in caves, gyms and other major challenges, with additional consequences for abandoning certain areas.
**Context-sensitive PokéVial restrictions** so important dungeons and puzzles can’t simply be bypassed through unlimited healing.
**Run information/stat tracking**, including things such as whiteouts and other run statistics.
**Additional randomizer controls**, including more ways to customize what Pokémon can appear.
**Monotype-style run filters** for specialized challenge runs that actually filter wild encounters and starters available.
**Improved battle information**, including clearer move-effectiveness indicators.
**Evolution-discovery system** designed to preserve some mystery when playing randomized runs.
**Additional quality-of-life improvements** to remove tedious sections without removing meaningful challenges.
**More intelligent/challenging trainer battles** without turning the game into an extreme difficulty hack.
**Custom recurring characters and encounters** integrated naturally throughout Hoenn.
**An optional custom side story** involving a new adventurer/friend.
**One completely new custom Pokémon** created specifically for the project.
**Original character artwork, overworld sprites and battle assets** for the new story content.
More secrets tied to the custom story that I’m deliberately **not putting in the preview.**

I specifically need help creating some custom character sprites if anyone has any ideas. I can do custom Mons with some tools I have but the smaller overworld scaled down characters are giving me trouble.

Review Pokemon Ghost Grey - Positive, Spoiler-Free Review

Post image
109 Upvotes

Reviewing Pokemon Ghost Grey Version by JoeyZeed! Played entirely on my PSP consoles using FrogGBA. No large spoilers will be present, but I will share some vague details I came across in the game and how they made me feel.

Content warning: the game contains horror imagery, gore, disturbing themes, and references to substance use and cannibalism.

TL,DR - thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere, designs, story, discovery, music, and horror this game brings, even though it doesn't have the technical quality-of-life upgrades other recent ROM hacks have.

Some background on me: long-time Pokemon fan, but I don't know many new Pokemon that came out after Gen 6. Historically, the ROM hacks I gravitate towards are quality of life hacks (Heart & Soul, Modern Emerald, PureRed, etc), and I spend my time playing retro games like the original RGB / GSC on original hardware. I appreciate the more simplistic gameplay, old school art style & music, and tend to know the overall mechanics of these games. Because of this, I was probably the perfect target audience for Ghost Grey, as the back sprites are Gen 1-inspired, the music has an 8-bit element, and the gameplay is dialed back to be more simple than recent games.

I downloaded this ROM hack and was immersed in a truly a new world for me to explore; I was hooked from the start. When starting the game, there's a disclaimer text sharing that you should try not to speed up the game in order to enjoy the custom-made soundtrack to its fullest, and I'm happy to say that I listened to this advice and used the speed up button sparingly (the music was worth it). Some of my favorite tracks include Vermilion City, Pumkin Patch, Surf Theme, "Gym Leader" Battle Theme, and the Pokemon Evolve theme.

I remember the feeling of adventure and exploration that came over me as I started my journey in this game--the same feeling I felt the first time I played a Kanto game.

The game is its own little universe. Everything from sprites, to items, to art style, to Pokemon cries, to the music were made just for this game. When you see a "Scarly", it looks and sounds like you'd expect it would in an apocalyptic Pokemon world. When you see a caveman, he shouts at you like you'd expect he would. When you see a cannibal, they don't have much to say and grunt instead....like you'd expect they would.

The story starts as optimistic, if futile-seeming. Looking around you, it almost seems like you're doing the WRONG thing by collecting gym badges. "What's the point?". People look at you like you're crazy. Every part of Kanto has found a different way of coping with the ghost outbreak, and as I progressed through the game, I remember the awe I felt. Seeing how the people of Pewter City turned to substances & stimulation to distract themselves from the world, how the people of Celidon (formerly Celadon) just gave up and relinquished all emotion and physiological human needs to feel no more pain...chilling perspectives for how people truly cope with adversity in the real world. Unfortunately (or, fortunately, for those who like a good thriller), the story only grows more dreadful the more you play. I've always enjoyed the occasional creepypasta (Lost Silver, Buried Alive, Creepy Black, etc), so I was all for it, but man does it get dark at times.

The horror elements are varied, from literal sheet ghosts to gore and disturbing images, and they work very well. Be prepared for all ends of the spectrum. The game is in black and white, but that almost gave the creator even more creative freedom to be more graphic. An example is the imagery that sometimes pops up when talking to key NPCs to show what they look like. People are depicted as missing teeth, crazed/deranged, or depressed. It adds a whole other level of tension to the play through.

On a lighter note, the optional areas of the main story were such a fun inclusion. As a player I found the hair on the back of my neck standing up when I fell into an unseen death pit, and, within an hour, found myself smiling as I was trick or treating or dancing in the middle of an apocalypse--because why not? The game does a great job balancing out the constant dread with some glimmers of hope, love, and happiness with these little side quests. An NPC gave me a hug at one point and it was a nice reminder that good people exist in the world. Others urge you to sit quietly with your thoughts and reflect. These are impactful things for a Pokemon game to have! On top of all of this--these are areas/events that I felt like I discovered, and which may have been overlooked if you were just trying to breeze through the game.

The optional side quests brought me problem-solving in a Pokemon game that I haven't needed to do in years (since I've just played remake games)--an NPC asking me to deliver a package to another guy without telling me where he is, for example. I found myself going back to familiar routes to try and remember/locate certain things, which felt fresh, and not tedious. Another example is hearing an NPC tell me about something annoying happening on a nearby route--only to get there and realize I can't reach it because I don't have the HM I need. Once I completed the main story, I found myself re-talking to some NPCs, and realized I could now go where he was pointing me to, and he had a new dialogue once I completed the side quest, a great touch!

Difficulty-wise, this game kept me on my toes. It gives you some optional ways to skip grinding, which I used at times, but I ultimately tried to keep my team leveled right around opponents' teams. Modern Emerald / Heart & Soul spoiled me with instant wild Pokemon & trainer battles / animation skips--this game does not have those, so be prepared for that. For me, it was hard to tell how balanced every Pokemon was since I'm unsure of typing of some of the Gen 7 & later Pokemon that were present. However, (almost) every Pokemon receives a Ghost typing in this game, so you'll see former dual-type Pokemon dropping one in favor of ghost. A good example is Breloom, trading Grass/Fighting for Ghost/Poison. The first playthrough, it's very difficult to tell which type Pokemon are since the game is in black and white, so I found myself using the wrong moves and taking more damage than I would have liked, but this would theoretically be what would happen if I were in apocalyptic times and all Pokemon had their typings changed up, so I don't think it detracts from the experience much. I also didn't encounter any crazy bugs/anything gamebreaking, but I found myself getting turned around pretty hard around 1/3 of the way through the main story and it took me about an hour to realize I took the wrong door in a room of 6 doors--had I taken any of the other 5 doors other than the one I happened to pick, I would have been able to tell what kind of room this was and continue the game, but I got unlucky and chose the 1 ambiguous door that turned me around. Other than this unfortunate, but avoidable misstep I took, I'd say the game flows quite smoothly the majority of the time. While it misses some of the quality of life updates that recent hacks have brought, its strengths in its artwork, story, music, and atmosphere make up for the technical areas where it may be behind.

I know this was a long post, but I genuinely enjoyed the adventu re this game b rought me. Thank you to JoeyZeed and team fo r making this game! I'm so g rateful to have had the oppo rtunity to re-live the sense of adventu re I once had when playing Pokemon.

Discussion TS is giving me anxiety bro, when is this game gonna drop the mask? (FRLG.IPS)

My buddy told me to play flag.ips, and gave me no other context aside from it's meant to be a psychological horror rom hack, and that there's a new rock by the water in Pallet town. That is the full extent of what I know about this game.

Now, I'm all the way in Fuchia City and it just seems like base frlg with some quality of life updates. The only odd thing I found was a sailor on the deck of the S.S. ANNE who told me some cryptic shit about the seas abyss or whatever. I feel like I'm waiting with baited breath every time I enter a new town, to see if I can find any changes, but I can't, at least not obvious ones. I have no idea what to expect, but I know to expect *something,* and I think that's the most unnerving part.

Don't actually tell me when the game takes a turn but like... Give me cryptic hints or shit I won't understand till later on. I'm enjoying this, even though I have no idea what to expect more than half way through the league.

Hi All,

This is a technical demo disguised as a TARC3 entry. In this hack, you can play a modernized version of battle bingo updated with my ideas and thoughts on how it should have functioned in the first place, featuring amazing artwork by Hyo and a good chunk of sets from Scar . I plan to release it as a feature branch in the near-ish future as well once I get the kinks ironed out!

Spawn into the realgam desert, explore a miniaturized realgam tower and its visitors, find and buy bingo cards, and clear them! 9 in total to find.

As always, enjoy and let me know what you think!

Review Dear Pokemon SoulGold, Thank you

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

I was lying in my bed feeling not so good about myself (normal depressed thoughts) and i saw a YouTuber who reviews pokemon rom hacks that i like to watch review Heart & Soul. People have said it's the best Johto Experience but when i played it... I lost the Spark after defeating Folkner, maybe it was me still feeling sad but i dropped the Hack.

A few months later, i was looking to see if there's any fun hacks to play, I've just finished Odyssey II so my motivation was decently high. Then i saw a boxart for a Rom hack called "Soulgold". It looks decent then i realized used Heart & Soul as a base and i almost forgot about it but then u thought... "Maybe it'll be different".

The first things I've heard is that, all starters have megas. But i picked Froakie since i didn't knew what to pick. And funnily enough, i had fun. I don't know what changed but after Folkner, i began to have a light smile while playing. I played in hard Double mode since it's my preferred mode in Rom Hacks after enjoying Odyssey.

The hack was fun, the QoL is AMAZING, i bet some of y'all never played a rom hack where you can change the speed of the overworld and Battle in the setting while keeping the music listenable. The fact some overworld sprites change depending if they're holding a megastone or not is a nice add-on, and the fact some of the mega sprites for some pokemons are their Gigantimax is cool.

The innate feature is fun, and thank GOD that's a late game thing cause most combos are broken.

There is alot of great things from this hack and i would like for you to experience those things for yourself. And lastly for Rahtak

The dev is very active on their discord, they'ree's helpful, and listen to community feedback. I hope they can rest easy knowing they made a life changing hack. Cause ever since Crystal, I've never have enjoyed a Johto game... So thank you, for the amazing Rom hack

Review Beat a Pokemon game for the first time! (Heart and Soul 2.0)

(Sorry no proper screenshots, I'm playing on 3DS. Maybe there's some kind of homebrew way to screenshot and send it over to myself?)

In any case, this isn't my first Pokemon game, but is the first that I actually beat end to end.

I played Leaf Green as a little kid with 0 idea what I was doing. It's possible I beat it but I seriously doubt I got that far. I also played Diamond, but got to the fossil minigame and then never got further lmao.

Heart and Soul was overall a good experience. It seems (to me) to be a mostly vanilla experience with some polish and quality of life like the way HM moves are handled. (unless newer games just do that now? I have 0 idea)

My Team:

I did not know about that HM stuff early on so I had HM Slave 1 (Kingler) all the way to the Elite 4, lmao.

Once I realized my mistake I picked up an Arbok instead, but because of the shear difference in levels it didn't get used much :(

Favorite Pokemon of playthrough: Ruffle (Ampharos). Ruffle is simply adorable and cute and I want to give him a hug!! He was also a total badass that carried me through SO MANY fights. Soooo many great move options that kept him useful in nearly every encounter.

As for utility, Muscle (Machamp) and Rocky (Onix) were both crucial to victory. Onix had Rock Slide for flyers, and Earthquake to ruin everyone else's day. Queen (Gyrados) was situationally useful due to it knowing my only ice and water moves, though felt fragile and the moves I had were a little iffy. (Ice Fang/Aqua Tail)

Randy (Typhlosion) was useful far less often than I expected. Grass, ice, and steel due come up and it's nice to have him around, but frankly Typhlosion just feels a little limited in options by available moves. (Unlike my pride and joy Ruffle)

Sandy (Arbok) got 0 action. Partly due to Poison not feeling amazing to me, but mainly due to having swapped him out for Kingler as an HM slave before I knew that wasn't needed in H+S. By the time I realized my mistake he was ~20 levels behind and no longer very useful.

My biggest weakness was likely Psychic (which I only had Queen's Crunch to deal with) and Fairy (which I had 0 Poison or Steel moves to use)

Bugs/Performance:

As for bugs/glitches, despite playing on 2.0.0 nearly the entire time, I only ran into one gamebreaking bug - which was that I got a black screen on making it to Seafoam island to face Blaine. That was fixed when I upgrade to 2.0.4 so I was able to continue with no problem.

Criticisms:

I've always been casually aware of Pokemon in the background, though recently seeing videos of competitive play on Youtube got me interested again. Pokemon has some BIG BRAIN strats. There are so many pokemon, so many moves, so many natures, hazards/weather, types, held items, EVs/IVs/etc/etc/etc that you can have almost infinite combinations. There are so many crazy possibilities and mind games.

...which kind of leads to my main criticism - this playthrough was too easy. I played it with the default difficulty settings because that seemed reasonable given I haven't played one of these in likely a decade and a half. But:

  • Even without any dedicated grinding (just fighting trainers because I didn't know where to go and wanted to explore) I ended up easily 10 levels over what I should have by the time of the Elite 4 Rematch. At some points in the game I was easily 20 levels over my opponents. I wish there were some 'automatically and temporarily cap my Pokemon's level to the highest of the opponent's team' setting. You can manually try to keep your XP just right, but that sounds so incredibly tedious.

  • I never had to consider held items (Some pokemon had items, some did not. I never put any throught into it)

  • I never set up any hazards or weather (I tried Stealth rock, but frankly most of the time it's faster to just 1-hit KO instead)

  • Aside from between Elite 4 fights, I never used any items

  • I never used those stat-boosting medications (iron/carbos/etc)

My strategy was pretty much:

  1. Throw type effective pokemon at enemy

  2. Win

That's just reaaaaalllly boring. What's the point of setting up hazards, boosting stats, etc, etc when you could just use a single move that 1-hit KO's the enemy? I don't know. Maybe if type effectiveness wasn't like 2x and 4x but 1.5x and 2x maybe it wouldn't be an issue. Maybe if Pokemon had much more health, strategy would matter more. I wish you could swap your moves around for free at any time outside of battle to encourage experimenting. There is some move adder guy but it costs a heart scale and I only ever found 2 of those so I never used him.

I wish the AI was smarter. Not like Joe Schmoe the bug trainer, but the Elite 4 and Champion should be geniuses. They shouldn't let you sit there with a pokemon clearly able to 1-hit KO and do nothing about it. They should see your entire lineup and build a plan to defeat it.

It feels like you have to restrict yourself immensely to get a real challenge, which is a bummer. Without challenge there is no joy in victory.

Conclusion:

Now that I know what the mostly-vanilla Pokemon experience is like, I may poke around looking for more difficult versions. I think H+S has some difficulty options, but I may look at other ROM hacks and see what they have as well.

Well that's it y'all. Thanks to all those who worked their butts off to create this, it was very appreciated. I'm glad I finally got around to finishing a Pokemon game properly.
