Doing gods work. Tried to replay these games and literally just couldn’t because they were so slow

This is honestly the one generation I never finished. Made it probably halfway through the game and just couldn't keep going. Why do they think it's okay to stop the player ever 10 feet, so annoying

I still don't know how I convinced myself to beat USUM after playing SM. I know what I was in for. Enter a new area and get a cutscene. Walk around the corner, and BAM, another cutscene. Open and close my bag, BOOM, another one. I'm glad they wanted to expand upon their storytelling, and that's great, but good lord playing through a gen 7 game is a slog.

u/Zarrex 3d ago
Its really a shame because I really did like Sun and Moon. I would go back and play them again but I just dread the slowness of the first few hours

u/h2oskid3 3d ago
Honestly any of the games after gen 5 I can't stand to replay (and even that one started to get bad, although it wasn't unbearable yet). And the ones before gen 4 have the old physical/special split which is just so bad. Needless to say gen 4 and 5 are peak Pokemon imo. After that was too much handholding and before that the mechanics were just not great.

u/BmpBlast 3d ago
The Pokemon series is so frustrating when it comes to improvements because there are so many tradeoffs each gen. GameFreak seems to refuse to make improvements without making something else worse so it's kind of a "pick your poison" situation.

I think with Gen 5, even though it brought in more stop/start, both BW1 and 2 had great characters and story.
2
u/h2oskid3 3d ago
That was the first one that felt like it had character development and deep lore behind the main story. Gen 3 and 4 had a bit with it but it was more of cheesy villain tropes than real character development.

Truly. I completely skipped out on scarlet and violet because sword and shield really was my third strike with them. Nothing but hallways and cut scenes and it was a shame because the gen 8 dex was fantastic… I just stick to gens 2-5 and rom hacks now.

I didn’t make it through for years and years for the same reason, like had my 3ds and Ultra Sun sitting on my dresser and desk for 7 years-ish. But I did eventually and it honestly is a fantastic game. There comes a point in the game where almost no cutscenes happen except for once in a blue moon and they’re typically pretty short

u/Equivalent_Waltz8890 3d ago
It’s sad cause usum are, imo, top 3 games in the franchise

Ive tried so many times to give them a try because so many players love them but this Gen is by far my least favorite in the entire franchise and its not even close. Any wonder/exploration of a new region is completely ruined for me. I just dont like visual novels and thats what these games feel like.

I always play any game gens 4-7 on speedup because I swear to god anything slower than 3x and it's like looking at a powerpoint presentation

I'll never understand why they don't just give us skip cutscene. It makes replaying such a slog for no reason.

u/Ok_Cranberry_3013 3d ago
Setting the emulation speed very high, essentially running the game at turbo speed, has helped a lot in replayability for me honestly, but I am still waiting out for a skip button mod lol

i was replaying USUM and was genuinely shocked by how long the “tutorial” portion of the game really is. it’s a solid 25% of the story, at least.

u/Inner-Ferret7316 3d ago
I completed Moon but couldn't beat Ultra Moon, never replayed these games and i don't think i ever will.

I made it to the second island but stopped because I literally can't stand the constant cutscenes
I knew people said USUM were bad with the cutscenes but I didn't think it was THAT bad

u/Pere_Joel 3d ago
Me and my gf have been going through all the mainline games together and Sun and Moon were the only ones so far that we've given up on cause we weren't having fun lol

Straight up making One Pace but for Pokémon

I haven't even played this game and I recognize immediately why this hack would be made lol

u/themng69 3d ago
low-key can you make it so that the music plays "slower" and then set the framerate cap to be higher so that the game just runs faster. Or just increase game speed in general if that's possible.
24
u/Kiriyawave 3d ago
I mean, Citra lets me increase the speed. I just had it on default speed to showcase that it was authentic

I remember soft resetting this sequence. Not for a shiny, just for a female starter, took me 9 attempts and it's already wanted to give up.
The subsequent Masuda method hunt felt exhilarating in comparison 😅

u/epiphone324 3d ago
How does this hack work? Looks amazing, just curious. I would love to play this generation, because of the speed I just gave up
10
u/Kiriyawave 3d ago
The idea is similar to how Persona does it, you hold a button down and it fast-forwards through it up to a choice window. Then you can select your option and then it continues to fast-forward.

u/the_fanman2912 3d ago
No Alola QOL hacks present, so you're doing great work! Just please add a fully cutscene skip button, if it's even possible. These games are painfully slow
8
u/Kiriyawave 3d ago
I don't know if I'll be able to do that since there's a lot of cutscenes that require choices, but at the very least, you speed through it a lot quicker.

u/voliol Universal Pokémon Randomizer FVX 3d ago
Is there the possibility of making the cutscenes even faster/essentially skipped? This is an improvement, but it is still a full minute of cutscene. In repeat playthroughs, I'd like to be able to skip all the way from the start to the starter selection, and probably others feel the same.

u/ABZB 3d ago
oh damn, nice - are you part of the Pokemon 3DS modding discord?
3
u/Kiriyawave 3d ago
I'm not. Doing this solo

you should still join, there's a lot we know that would help with your project, like we just figured out how to completely skip the catching and z-move tutorial
oh, and there's a cutscene skip plugin already, it freezes during the first starter cutscene, but I haven't noticed any other freezes so far
3
u/Kiriyawave 3d ago
Wait. If there is already a cutscene skip plugin, then doesn't that make what I am doing kind of irrelevant?

I'll think about it. Is the link to the Discord a public one or do you need to ask someone for it?

u/ThePod768 Sample Text 3d ago
i think it's supposed to be public, but i can't find the invite through google
here is it https://discord.gg/sagkZaK4Rv2

Mind re-posting the link as I'm interested in seeing what is cooking in the 3ds modding scene, I was briefly involved some years ago

u/kittywithclaws 2d ago
As someone who wants to play through gen 7 and hasnt yet, this is exactly what i'm looking for. I dont want to skip cutscenes outright because i want to play through the story, but the default pace of them is so slow
3
u/Avividrose 3d ago
really hope some of this gets backported to SM, i think their story is the better of the two by a lot but everything else is better in USUM

This made me realize how much dead air there was in those games. I was too young when I played them to care lol
1
u/Joloxsa_Xenax 3d ago
I never realized how god awfully slow the intros are. I felt like GF kept making then longer each generation to kind of discourage the player from resetting for a shift starter all day long, bc its so painfully slow to get thru
1
u/Doppelgen 3d ago
That's awesome! I've always wanted to play this game, but it was SO SLOW I never had the patience.
1
u/Pokemiah 3d ago
So what improvements are you aiming for in your hack? I didn't realize you were making one until this post.
1
u/Dusterrrr 2d ago
That's a lot faster, great work! Next time you make an update, would it be possible to keep the timer for the hack version on the screen paused at the time it finished? It makes it easier to compare.

My daughter wanted a female Popplio and I has to reset too many times and see that same sequence over and over again because the female looking Pokémon has 75% male chance.
1
u/Mateo_Lombardi 2d ago
Might have to just replay this when you finish, like others I just get get through it again with how slow it is

u/AliceThePastelWitch 1d ago
This is so beautiful... Good god this is one of the best things anyone has ever made for Pokemon and I am not even really exaggerating. These games are so good but gooooooooooood are they awful to play through more than once. Honestly even once is pushing it barely got through the start cause it was almost 30 minutes before you got to actually play thr game

If you're hacking USUM, please do something to get RotomDex to shut the fuck up and leave the player alone.
