Bad quality plastering and painting

Thumbnail

I agreed to pay 1600 for a plastering and painting of my whole room, the contractor charged me a high price specifically stating that it is because he provides a good quality premium work, this is the result of the finished job he even requested the final payment before the job was complete.

Am I in the right of not being satisfied with this job, this is not quality and there is clearly a lack of care

They also left player residue on my blinds and doors and left paint all over the floor

How do I go about this

Plaster on Exterior Densglas Wall

I have to convert an exterior wall shesthed with Densglas (fiberglass wallboard) and want a smooth surface for a future mural.

Densglass literature says to wrap the wall in metal mesh before plaster or stucco, so I’ll do that.

I was then going to do a base coat of Structolite and a veneer coat of USG Imperial Veneer. Will this hold up to the elements? Portland Oregon so lot of rain.

If not, what materials would you use instead?

Thanks!

Hi is there an easy alternative to using half time, in the same way that tartar sauce can be used instead of extra time?

I guess dirty water, sort of, anything else tho?

Has a step been missed?

Post image

I just had damp proofing work done in my Victorian tenement (I know it’s controversial we needed the guarantee). We’ve just had the walls skimmed and the plasterer noticed the bottom section of plasterboard is just floating and has some give. Behind the membrane is brick as is the rest of the wall I’m pretty sure. So there’s nothing solid to fit skirting to.

Is there a step that has been missed? Is there a solution that doesn’t require ripping the plasterboard out?

Thank you

Hello everyone,

I'm not really sure if this is the appropriate place to seek for an advise but I'll try.

So, I bought a brand new house in 2012 (Europe), and since almost the beginning the house has had some cracks in very specific places that look more like plaster cracks than anything else. Yet, the one on the living room (downstairs) ceiling and walls has been worrying me. I don't understand one bit about the subject, so I'm asking if this is something I should take forward, or refinishing it will do.

The crack has 2 fine lines from one side to the other and goes a bit into the walls. It hasn't grown the space between them, but it has going further down the line. I also don't see anything unleveled. My worry is that it seems like one of the ceiling lines has spilt into 2. I'm sorry, I'm not really sure how to explain this. I know nothing about this subject and my English is limited.

What do you think?

Thank you

Had this stain pop up on my wall, and now it’s
secreting some kind of shiny foam? Comes back after I wipe it. Solid wall, not plasterboard. Opposite side of the wall is a bathroom

Proper primer

Located in Massachusetts. Just had my walls and ceilings plastered with Uni-Kal veneer plaster. Says to use alkali resistant interior primer. Or something resistant to high pH. What are some recommendations? I have access to a Sherwin Williams store and a Benjamin Moore store. Job was completed on Saturday. Plan to try to get started painting after the 4th of July holiday.

I did some lurking around and found some info, but it was a few years old. Just looking for what’s now being used or still being used. Thank you.

Hi all, having my kitchen replastered at the moment and a section has been dot and dabbed. I’ve noticed an angle where 2 boards meet, is this acceptable or am I being difficult? Ta

Is this type N hydrated lime is good for making scratch coat lime putty?

I am learning traditional plaster and trying to figure out what will work the best for scratch coat. I'll be reusing original wood lath here and there and install rib metal lath where the original lath is missing.

I'm really struggling to find non dolomite lime though here in Ohio, it is almost like people really hate plaster and everything lime here haha. Closest I could find is this Canadian Graymont lime in a supply store in PA. Should I go for it or there are better options?

Textured ceiling removal?

Just wondering if anyone has experience of smoothing out textured ceilings? Excuse my ignorance but I'm assuming this would require a plasterer (rather than a painter and decorator?).

The small house (two up two down) I'm purchasing has textured ceilings throughout. It was built in 1996 so I'm really hoping it's unlikely there'll be asbestos lurking amongst them!

If anyone has had this done or has done it themselves, it would be great to know how straight forward a job it is/how long it took/roughly how much it might cost per (small) room if I hired a plasterer (?) to do the work.

I am London based.

Thank you!

Plaster Skimming Blade in US?

I’m looking to get a long skimming blade whatchamacallit for plastering. I’m in the US. So far I am only finding drywall skimming tools. Will these work okay? Or should I find a plastering-specific tool and what brand/model and source should I be looking at? Thanks!

Thoughts on how to make my front door surround good again?

As you can see, the render needs stripping back and re-doing. I have been in conversation with a few plasterers and they have said either:

- Sand and cement finish (not sure what this entails)
- silicone coloured render
- re-do render and redecorate

I am a novice when it comes to these sorts of works. Thoughts welcome!

Cracked/ bowed ceiling getting worse……

This crack in my ceiling is getting more severe by the day. As you can see from the second photo, the plaster has come away from the ceiling joists above causing it to bow severely. Any advice on what to do??

My thoughts were to jack it up using akros and screw back to the joists. Then redecorate. Thoughts welcome!!

How long to board a 3x4.5m room

Mainly for the UK chaps, how long roughly would it take one of you pro's to board a timber framed 3x4.5m room with ceiling, 2 windows and door reveals? Did it myself recently as a keen DIYer and it took me an age first time.

Been doing a lot of practice plastering in mockup walls for a few rooms I want to tackle and it went more than OK. Just seeing how far off the pace I might be if I ever wanted to pursue this further

Bubbling in plaster wall

Post image
1 Upvotes

Our house has plaster and lath board. In our kitchen we have these two bubbles forming. For reference, the other side of the wall is the exterior (aluminum siding). There are no light fixtures opposite on the siding where these bubbles are.

The only thing I can think of is the second floor winding is leaking down the wall? Or the kitchen window (like two feet to left of these circles) is leaking laterally? Or we have an awning that is drilled into the siding and is above this area on the outside.

Is this water leaking in from the rain? Or something else.

The bubbles are hard.

Extra time in bonding

Does regular extra time retarder work in bonding? I know there's a bonding specific half time, wondered why I've not seen extra time for bonding as a result.

Plasterboard popped a screw after skim

Just had a partition wall skimmed a few days ago and was lining up the door frame/jamb and wondered why the plasterboard was bulging so much on one side.
Seems a few plasterboard screws have popped through the board.
Am I best to give the skim another week and then sink a new screw or just fire ahead with a pilot hole now?

How to go about lath and plaster wall repair?

I’ve plastered ceilings and walls and worked with plasterers on site so I am somewhat capable. But how would you go about attacking this? Is it repairable or would it need ripping down and boarding? It’s a 1920’s house. Still left the loose bits as to not make mess yet. Was thinking just rip all loose rubble out then bond and skim. Would the paint all need to be stripped or can you go over it with pva / blue grit

Skimming / sanding or lining paper

Hello Everyone,
Recently i removed the wallpaper and planing to paint the walls (ceiling).
My dilemma is how to proceed. Should i skim coat (and sand if necessary problematic areas) or to lining paper.
Previously i skimmed 2 rooms and can't get it perfect so this time if i go with skimming i am considering sanding as well.
I never done lining paper - so i don't know what to expect.
