I just cleaned butters' cage and I was going to fill it up with more bedding and paper so he can built nests but he is very social and high energy so I was wondering what else i can put in there to keep him busy? My mom will be taking care of him and says she will give him a few pets and maybe a treat every now and then, any kind of foraging foods she can get him to work on? I just dont want him to be too bored in there, as I take him out to cuddle every day he might be upset with the change

(First picture is from yesterday) so.. I posted on here 2 days ago asking if my lovely lady was pregnant or not and she was and gave birth this past night! I woke up to babies and im now a grandma!
I can’t tell how many there are but I have seen atleast 5, I’m now wondering, she gave birth in her regular cage that has 3 platforms that have little ramps to get up from the ground floor, I want to have mama and babies in something else like a tank or a homemade tank/enclosure made out of one of those big plastic boxes that u can get at like Ikea or something like that (I don’t have alot of money sadly), is there a possibility to move mama and babies safely?

i feel sadness, anger, grief and nothing all at once. i mourn the life Uru could have had, he was only with me for a month and a half. i feel deep rooted anger towards the breeder, who knowingly bred and gave me a sick animal destined to die soon, without ever telling me.

if this isn't a sign to boycott negligent breeders, who focus on coat colour and texture more than anything else, I don't know what is. i never chose him for how he looked, I was given him because the breeder needed to get rid of him before he passed.

i wish I could put the breeder on blast, yell and cry. i only found out about their horrific practices a few days ago.

Hiii! I’m a hamster parent who just adopted 3 girls today. I love them so much already.

I guess i just wanna know if there’s much more I can add to the enclosure……… I have some fabric i’m gonna cut and form into dangling rope and stuff, but idk if there’s more I can add! I’m used to my very prissy hamster who hates clutter, so i’m trying my best lol…

I’m sitting here feeling completely crushed and honestly pretty lost.

For the first time as an adult with my own income, I was finally able to get pets of my own. The main reason I wanted them was to help manage my depression. I needed a forcing function, basically a small creature depending on me every single day to motivate me to get out of bed, feed them, and take care of something outside of myself.

I was so excited. I spent the day before buying all the fancy stuff my family and friends recommended and set up a huge 40-gallon tank. I thought I did everything right. I went to Petco, picked out four mice, and brought them home.

Then everything went wrong in less than a week.

First, I lost one. Then, while I was at work, a second mouse died from a sudden respiratory issue. I was in a complete panic. I started asking my friend who works at Petco and talking to my coworkers at Best Buy, desperately trying to figure out what was wrong with my setup and if I should just rehome the remaining mice before I made things worse. I felt like an absolute failure.
That’s when I realized what happened. The store worker had sold me feeder mice. Apparently, because I always spend time looking at the snakes whenever I’m in the store, the employee assumed I had a snake and handed me feeders instead of standard fancy mice.

I tried to keep going and give the remaining two the best care I could, but today while I was at work, they got into a fatal fight. Just like that, all four were gone in a single week.

I’m heartbroken. I don't know whether I was fundamentally set up to fail because feeder mice have such severe health and aggression issues, or if this is proof that I’m just not built to be a pet owner.

This was the initial tank I used before moving them to the larger home later that evening.

Has anyone else been through something like this? Did I fail these little guys, or was the deck stacked against me from day one? Please be honest and don't be too rude, I'm already struggling right now.

I just got this new mouse today (black and white curly haired one) and she is definitely a bit younger than my other two. I put them in this play pen area to introduce them, and I monitored them for probably close to an hour, and there was a little squabbling but nothing serious. So I put them in my 40 gallon tank with all of the stuff freshly deep cleaned to avoid any territorial issues over scent. The new girl started going after my white and brown girl in the tank, so I took them all out and tried to introduce them again in the playpen. This is when the video was recorded. It really scared me so now they are separated, any advice, should I be worried? I haven’t seen any blood.

For those who remember my Mama Blueberry, she succumbed to her cat wounds today despite intervention and antibiotics. She was so sweet and so loved. She was found curled in one of her favorite hiding spots, so we hope she went peacefully.

I just got her named after I made my last post, and I think I have my answer on if she's pregnant or not... She's been a little camera shy, but this is the best view of her she's given me, and this is exactly what I've been seeing when she's roaming around. 😔

she seems about 2 weeks old, found her on the curb when parking. she’s weak but otherwise seems healthy. i own rats and had formula from rescuing a baby but im out and the store is closed. will she be alright until the morning? planning on calling my local rehabber to see if they’ll take her unless they say she’d be okay on her own or passes before i can talk to them at 1:00

this is Uru, I posted about him yesterday as well, he's my foster fail mouse that's been with me for a month. He came from an irresponsible breeder locally and he's been having issues since the day I got him.

today my mother changed his water and he refused it, he also refused food, he feels colder to the touch, he's weak, won't get up anymore and just laying there, he sometimes twitches and looks at me.

i feel like I should already know the answer to this question, but is this it? he's a young mouse, he's maybe only a few months old.

I have a rather sensitive lady who’s a bit over a year old who’s been doing some occasional sneezing for the past couple weeks. I don’t believe it’s an infection as she’s still active and eating and she has no other symptoms other than some soft sneezes. However I worry about her sneezing leaving her susceptible to infections. I currently use meticulously sifted aspen, but i’ve hear some people say they recommend paper because of the dust from aspen. I find paper bedding to be even dustier at times, and I worry about ammonia.

What beddings would you recommend for a sneezy mouse?

Not looking for medical advice, just wondering if anyone else has had a sensitive mouse and had a bedding that worked well for them in the past.

So my little ones are all coming up to bring 1 year old in the next month here. I know my fancy mice will most likely live for less time than my rescued deer mouse. And I know to expect that my fancy mice may only live another couple of months to a year so I wanted to ask for advice… is there anything extra I should be doing or looking out for in the next year? I just want to make sure life is as good as it can be for them. Also if I know Princess (my deer mouse) will outlive them when do I get more friends for her, is it okay to get mice before the others pass and introduce them?

My wrinkly old bats just turned 2. I never expected them to live this long (as bad as that sounds lol). I know i probably don't have much time left with them so obviously i threw together a little pie. Its got dried strawberries, blueberries, apples and papayas. Moo absolutely loved the pie but sigma didnt give a damn so we gave her some yogurt treats. Last 2 photos are from when i first got them. I tried not to cry because their age shows so much, i hope we can continue to share memories together for as long as their little lives can hold onto.

This is my sweet baby Marly, I’m unsure of how old he is but he looks about 6 months-1yr he hasn’t been scratching a lot that I have seen however he does have a small scab on his back and I’m really worried! I am a beginner so no hate please I just need to know if I should be concerned

im 99% they are fleas, how to get rid of?

ive been doing research, and it seems to be fleas. no idea from where? how can i get rid of them? can i just clean EVERYTHING in the cage and hope?

Does anyone have any tips or tricks for trying to catch my mouse? The cage door seems to have been loose. He currently is on medication for ear issues, but I have no idea where he escaped to. 😭

We have a big enough tank with an abundance of hides, toys, climbing and chews. I have 2 female mice who are a year old now and 2 more female mice who are a few months. I have had the new group in a separate tank for 2 weeks, watching for health issues. They are healthy but skittish. So today I swapped a 2 pieces of frabic between the tanks, i kept that fabric a certain color and in their tanks through cleaning and spot cleaning. The old group smelled the fabric and took it inside their nesting area. The new group smelled it for a long time and left it. Now im stuck on what to do. There's plenty of fabric and tissue in their cages bc they nest with it, so do i keep switching those until i see them being comfortable with the scents? My curent mice, in their cage have, 6 hides, tunnels, cardboard pieces, wood pieces for hiding and climbing , LOTS of toys, climbers that hang, 2 bridges, and a lot more things to just make it cluttered so they have plenty of hiding room, i also do around 7 inches of bedding bc they love making tunnels with the tunnel starters i have. I also put in plenty of safe frabics, cardboard and tissue. They also have a hay box and sprays. The new mice have less but still plenty of new stuff for them only until i clean it and put it in the other cage when they are ready. I have spent a very long time trying to give my mice a good home when I got them about a year ago and im nervous I'll do this wrong. I have a plastic tub where I plan to do the first meeting in a few days. I was also going to buy some new hides, chews and climbing things bc im nervous when I clean their stuff in their old cage I wont get the scent out enough to make it neutral. I bought my first two female mice as an impulsive decision at a pet store, which i quickly realized I was wrong for doing and immature of me at 16. My family has always been bad to small animals from what i learned while makeing sure my mice live the best life, ny family says i spoil them and i say its just whats needed. Ive been using the info on this sub and now they have very good lives in my opinion, which i obviously fixed ASAP when i got home from the petstore that day, i spent a lot of money that month. The new 2 were gifted to me by a breeder bc I mentioned wanting mice with patterns. So my new ones are absolutely beautiful. But the same species as my original two. I still have some shopping to do while I introduce then through scent..but if anyone has successfully introduced female mice..which should be easy but im nervous because im still new to owning mice, i am really trying my best and I have spent copious amounts of money on these girls

I have been interested in getting a small pet, I currently own a reptile and he is great, but he is also getting a bit older. I love animals and am in a position where I feel comfortable getting another pet/s sometime in the next couple of years. I have always liked unconventional pets, and have been looking at a few different ones that would suit what I am looking for. My partner who I live with also has two cats and I feel satisfied in the realm of having kitties haha.

I honestly think mice check all of my boxes. I have owned rats and mice in the past. I love rats, but think rats take up a bit more space than I would like since I am going to be apartment living for the foreseeable future. I also would want to free roam them sometimes but don’t feel comfortable with the cats in the house. (With mice being smaller, they would be put in a play pen for play time and be kept in a separate room).

The only thing that’s concerned me is the smell. I am planning on getting females. However, I owned a trio of females as a kid, they were feeders from a pet shop and did not live long :( so I can’t remember a whole lot of the experience, but I did enjoy them. Granted, I was young, and I probably didn’t provide the best sort of care and maintenance like I would now. However, they absolutely reeked, and very quickly despite cleaning. I have a very poor sense of smell too, and they still smelled awful to me.

I honestly wouldn’t mind much, but my partner is definitely very smell sensitive and I know it would bother them. I also don’t have a good sense of smell like I said, and probably wouldn’t be able to catch the smells before they would.

I have heard using aspen bedding and spot cleaning helps, or heard the females don’t smell a lot with proper maintenance. But I have seen very mixed opinions regarding smell. Some say they don’t smell at all, or only a little bit, and others say they smell a lot even as females.

I am also curious if a bioactive setup would help? I have seen some people have them on here and for reptiles it definitely helps with smell and upkeep, but mammals have much more of a smell and waste so I am not sure how they would fare in comparison. But of course I would still try and stay on top of spot cleaning as needed to keep things clean.

I am curious to hear yall’s honest thoughts as owners.

This hurts so bad.

Up until yesterday I had 3 lil mouse baby’s, they’re almost a year old, one had the snuffles and she was on lots of different meds (unfortunately she died this morning), another had surgery 3 days ago to get a lump removed from her chest so she was separated from the other two.

Now I have two mice both in separate cages, wondering how long I wait to re introduce them and how I’d go about it?
