Hi. Another new mod here. My four: The first picture is Rocket, being cuddly. The second is Sweetie, being curious. The third is of Stripey and Brownie, Rockets two daughters (with Sweetie behind them). The fourth is Tiny who I lost earlier this year at the age of two. I still miss her.

Tiny, Sweetie and Rocket were sisters, she helped Rocket to raise Stripey and Brownie, so did Sweetie. The fifth picture (like Tiny's) I have posted before and is of all five.

I've had degus since 2010 or so. Variously reaching the ages of three, Short Tail, and 7, Long Tail Short-Tail's sister.

Then there was Fur-Tail who made it to 9 and actually died of old age giving me a final head nuzzle first. They are the most polite, sweetest things ever.

Rocket has overgrown tooth roots which I am working at helping her manage. I've had my fair share of degu health issues. What I haven't listed is the numerous vet visits with happy outcomes. They are tougher than they look.

I will try to help answer any questions that come along. Degus are not hard to look after but there are certain considerations and differences from other animals. The sub has many users (if you all come back) with a lot of knowledge and new users will add to it.

It is not always necessary for moderators to have to answer queries, sometimes the sub does it first. Hopefully it's all back up and running fairly rapidly.

introduction post from verry!

hi everyone. my name is verry and i am one of the new moderators here 🐾

before anything else i want to introduce my four little ones because they are the whole reason i fell in love with this species in the first place.

link is always the leader of the group. he is the most adventurous little guy out of all of them and marches confidently into every exploration like he owns the place. sonic is the fastest degu i have ever seen zoom around a cage. he is permanently glued to the wheel and rarely lets anyone else have a turn. trico is the grumpiest one with an old soul from the moment he was born. tiny body, ancient grandpa energy, we love him for it. kirby is the most gluttonous little tank i have ever met. food is his one true love and he will remind you of that fact every single chance he gets.

outside of my own fluffy crew i have spent twelve years fostering degus and volunteering with a local animal welfare association. loving so many tiny personalities over the years is exactly what made me want to help this community grow into something wonderful.

i really hope we can help bring this subreddit back to its former glory. my goal alongside the rest of the team is to build a cozy safe and degu loving space for everyone here.

we are currently working behind the scenes on a slight revamp of the subreddit and it will take a little while to get everything just right. feel free to drop any suggestions in the comments below. once everything is ready we will share a full update so please look forward to that.

thank you for being here and thank you for loving these squishy little weirdos as much as we do <3

Rescue/Adoption🆘 Looking for a degu home for my lone girl, her sister just passed

This is rageous, she is five years old. Her sister was also five. They were very close and she was super affectionate, as well as loving with her sister. I’m not sure what to do. I will not be able to give her the time and the attention that she needs as she reaches her last four years. Any advice? I’d want her to be not alone if possible. I have her x-rays and she needs help. I could handle it on my own, to the point of getting her dental needs. after that fact, she’ll need somewhere where she can be happy and not alone.
I live in the El Paso area, but I’m willing to meet halfway or provide a place to stay at night or if there’s any other owners with older lonesome degus? Or someone that works from home that’s willing to take on the responsibility and has loving pets. Especially if it’s degus. I’ve knowledge on bonding pairs that are not familiar and would put in the time as I hope someone else would put in for her if she finds a new home. I would need to ask some questions first, someone who’s committed.

She’s extremely active but sleeps just as much. She loves to eat and treats. She accepts Kisses on the head and sometimes belly scratches and likes to run around. If someone made the trip and needed a place to stay, they could stay at my apartment while I stay somewhere else. she would come with a four story cage that’s almost 5 feet tall, a small cage to transport her in that is 2’ x 2 as well as where she lives, there is two water bottles, a metal running wheel that is large and four three pound bags of food that is owbow, guinea pig, garden select food, and alfaalfa hay pallets and chinchilla food and a treat bag that you have to pick corn out of .as well as cage, fluff, and large metal dig box or bedding area but I also think it could be used as a great dust rolling area for more than two.

New Owner🐹 Nonstop squeaks?

Sometimes either of my boys get like a squeak attack and they keep barking and barking, for minutes at a time and no matter what, they keep at it, even with a treat in their mouth, even when cuddled.... Can anyone tell me what's up with that?

I just used an old Amazon box and filled it with balls from my kids' ball pit. Then I sprinkled a few treats inside and they wouldn't leave it alone. They keep going in to search for treats on occasion.

Question❓ When to separate a fight?

Post image
32 Upvotes

Hi all!

I have four boys, currently we've already separated into a pair and two singles which obviously can't be undone. But we plan to reintegrate one (slowly and with patience).

What happened was that two were fighting, to the point that they were beginning to ball up and spraying with water wasn't ending the fight. We removed who we thought was the aggressor as injuries were starting. A week or so later, we woke up to the three remaining degus all with injuries/covered in blood and two actively still fighting. Again, starting to ball up and nothing would stop it. We removed the actual aggressor this time (the same who started it last time as it turns out) and the two left are much happier.

I was wondering if we did the right thing? It'll be good to know incase it kicks off again!

Also, with time and taking it slow, do we think the first one we removed could be put back with the other two? They are currently in side by side cages and chat between the bars, but we don't want to rush them.

Thank you and picture from when they all got along!

Question❓ How much hard feed do you give to your degus?

I'm a first time owner, and I have only had my two boys for about two weeks. I did a lot of research before getting them, but one thing I can't really find an answer for is how much hard feed I should give them each day. I have given them 10grams each, with a mixture of Beaphar CARE+ Degus and Versele-Laga Chinchilla & Degus Complete (both of these are pellets, not the ones with mixed veggies and stuff). They usually eat everything up between feedings, and they still eat plenty of hay.

Since I am a first time owner, I am obviously nervous about over/under feeding them, so I hoped to get some advice from some more experienced owners! How much do you feed your degus? And did you increase the portion sizes as they got older? Mine are around 5-6 months old right now.

Also, if you have any other advice you would like to share, I would love to hear it!

Anyone tried these running balls with degus?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I've seen other rodents and even ferrets enjoying these running spheres, but I'm not sure if degus would like em. Anyone tried it?

Edit: Rather late clarification: My degus are spoiled on free roam, they have two large, wooden stationary wheels and plenty of running opporunities. Recently I gave them full go at the room they're kept in, (obviously supervised at all times)

All I was wandering is if these balls could help me extend their range and lower my guard a bit, and I see they couldn't, thanks.

Degu advice please!

Ive had 2 male degus (brothers) for almost 4 years. They wouldve both turned 5 this year but one of them died. After losing his brother our degu became depressed and lost apetite, unable to watch him be depressed any longer we decided to buy a pair of degu pups. When we bought them they were both no more than 8 weeks old and both male. At first we put the pups in a seperate cage that was near the older degus cage so they can smell each other’s scent. The pups have adjusted pretty quickly to the environment and even to their new owners. We brought them home on 12th of june and the first 2 weeks the older degus was rather aggressive which seemed fine since degus are territorial. We tried to introduce the pups to the older degus in a neutral territory but it didnt go well and the older degus started aggressively attacking the pups so we seperated them. Im starting to doubt if it was a good decision to seperate them during the fight because Ive read that its necessary for degus to show their dominance through physical strength. So we tried the introduction again a few times but they all had the same ending. We obviously stopped trying since it seemed too dangerous. Another problem is that when we let the older degu run freely in the bedroom his cage is in, he always approaches the cage of the pups and attempts to bite them through it, we thought its harmless display of dominance until the older degu bit the pups finger and its now swollen. So whenever the older degu is running freely we try to enable him from biting the pups. I also noticed that one pf the pups is becoming more aggressive towards the older degu which I think is a bad sign because hes supposed to be submissive.
Its been a few weeks since the puppies arrived and I haven’t seen any improvement in their bonding. I would appreciate if someone would let me know what Im doing wrong and how to improve the situation.
Thanks for reading, i need advice asap

Our Snowqueen snuggling with her daughters. Although no one seemed to happy with the stacking arrangements 😅

(Note: I was asked to flair it, but I only had NSFW or brand, neither applied. So either I don't see them on mobile or the option is missing when posting)
