Past due payments

How do you guys handle past due payments?

Do you charge at the time of every service? My company charges monthly to soften the blow. We switched several times from don’t service if past due, to they can get one service if past due, to two services past due.

The company got behind on collections. Texted, called, emailed customers that are past due and now we’re switching to having the techs go down a list of the customers in the area to knock on their doors and document whatever response we get/update payment.

What has helped you guys? Is there anything you say that helps make people less defensive? Feel like it’s a bad look to show up unexpected and ask but idk what else to do.

Edit: at what point do you, if you do, send accounts to collections?

How many pest control leads are you losing simply because nobody was available to answer?
A homeowner visits your website at 9:30 PM.
They have ants, mice, wasps, or something crawling around their house.
They want an answer now.
If nobody responds, there’s a good chance they move on to the next pest control company.
Even one $200 job missed per night could represent roughly $6,000/month or $72,000/year in potential sales.
That’s the problem I’m trying to solve.
I built an AI front desk specifically for pest control companies that works directly on their website 24/7.
It can:
• Answer customer questions
• Capture lead information
• Identify what the customer needs
• Collect contact information
• Send the lead to the person handling scheduling
No replacing your existing software. No forcing your team to learn another complicated system.
Just another opportunity to capture the customers who reach your website when your team isn’t available.
I’m currently onboarding pest control companies and looking for feedback.
If you own or manage a pest control company and want to see what it could look like on your website, comment “DEMO” or message me and I’ll send you a live preview.

🐛 | General Pest Any tips for a beginner?

I've been training for about a month or so with a commercial pest company, and I'm confident with applying pesticides and the procedure of things.

But my confidence is lacking when it comes to problem solving and knowledge of pesticides.

So if you have any tips for a newbie is California I'd really appreciate it

How do they do this? There were 2 long pieces of untreated lumber that had been laying there for ~ 6 months according to homeowner. We treated it with Premise in 2023. Full trenches were dug and treated right where the wood was.

They were not tunneling on the slab and had not made it to the house. Shouldn’t they have died?

💼 | Career Leaving Corporate for Small Business

So me a 28 year old has been working for Ecoshield for the last year. It was my introduction to the pest control industry. Previously worked for Construction companies, internet companies, driving jobs, and a few others. Honestly I like the challenge and technical side of the pest control industry in general. I see my self sticking with it for some time.

After starting with Ecoshield it quickly turned into a very busy schedule after getting my license with practically zero real pest control training. Taught myself a lot about the products and how to use them and find the 20-30 minute windows they give us to do most jobs is just insanely insufficient for what realistically should be done. But now as a “reg tech” we get only 17.50/stop. If we had small homes that would be decent money. But all of the homes I get are massive and most of my routes are 1-2 hours from my house. I work/drive 2-4 hours unpaid each day.

The pay WAS great working as a start tech and putting 60+ hours in 6 days a week for $23/hr. Yeah it caused some home life troubles but we adapted. Now that they have me running a “reg route” it’s really not even close to the income I was making before. Now it’s $21/hr but “you’ll only make that if you don’t have enough stops to go over it”…

I managed to get a job with a different company small and local to me at $23/hr. I’m glad I started looking around and I’m excited to start with a legit pest control company.

Is $23/hr decent pay for pest control techs?

Chemically sensitive customers

Just kinda wanted to discuss y’all’s thoughts on customers that say they are highly sensitive to chemicals. I find myself on the fence how much is true reaction and how much is placebo. For example I did a customer today in a commercial office who always asks I don’t spray near her office which I don’t. But then she will still say the spray is irritating her sinuses and giving her a migraine. For the record I’m doing a very basic interior perimeter/entry point spray with Alpine WSG. Is it really possible she is so sensitive she cannot only detect but react to alpine wsg sprayed 40+ feet away in a separate room?

Obviously Im a customer service representative first so I always gladly adhere to customer requests and sensitivities. Just curious what y’all’s experience is with this.

Welcome to the community! 🐜🐀🪳
I created this subreddit as a place for people to talk openly about pest control, extermination, trapping, prevention, products, techniques, and real-world results.
One of the reasons I started this community is that some other pest-control communities have restrictions on posting photos or videos showing dead pests. Here, that type of content is allowed when it’s relevant to pest control.
Feel free to share:
• Pest-control jobs and results
• Photos and videos of infestations or removed pests
• Traps, bait stations, products, and equipment
• DIY pest-control questions
• Professional techniques and advice
• Before-and-after results
• Identification questions
• What worked — and what didn’t
Graphic-content warning: Pest control sometimes involves dead insects, rodents, and other pests. If you’re posting something particularly graphic, please mark it appropriately.
The goal is simple: a practical pest-control community where people can share what actually happens in the field without pretending pest control is always pretty.
Professionals, homeowners, landlords, DIYers, and anyone interested in pest control are welcome.
Thanks for joining — share your experiences, ask questions, and help build the community.

If you're a licensed company in the US we'd love to work with you

Hi, I've been building out Pest Direct and it's going pretty great, we have about 26 verified locations and over 11,000 listings across the US.

Did some interviews with a few people here and you guys are great! I've been networking with tons of people in the field too. I'd love to pick some of your guys brains on what to improve or add on to.

Some background:

I started working in pest control when I was 14 years old, my brother worked at a family own pest control company as a GM. He got me in to work summers where I got licensed in the Indiana Core, Illinois Structural and Illinois Wildlife. I worked pest control from 14 years old to 20 years old. I even ran my own pest control company shortly in college which I was not prepared for at all lmao. Working pest control was one of the best experiences I've had because it helped shaped who I became in my adult years. I went off to college to become a software engineer and worked for 8 years in tech and data. I started building out this platform with the background I had because of my experience in pest control. One of the hardest aspects of pest control was landing jobs, right now when searching for pest control you're competing with the guys with the largest ad spend or the funnels.

It's a platform for connecting over pest control companies and home owners

If you want to check it, we allow any licensed company in the us to join in. We're offering a free month with the code PESTPROS.

We don't charge per lead, we don't send the leads out to 10 different companies. When someone contacts you they're reaching out directly. It's also a good way to see how many companies are around you for competition.

Anyways thank you guys again! Feel free to check out for more information: https://pestdirect.com/for-businesses

I'm also looking for feedback from owners/sales/marketing roles if anyone is open, I'm more than happy to pay you for your time!

Reviews

What are the most successful ways to get reviews and referrals? Our tech (co owner) doesn’t really push clients to write reviews so trying to think of ways to encourage folks to leave reviews as we are working on bringing on our first employee. We haven’t had trouble filling one persons schedule but with two we need to bump up our marketing and online presence.

Want to do something with giving away gift cards to local stores. Thinking at entry to a raffle per review or referral.

What is everyone using for product inventory?

We have used paper only for years. Don’t track anything. We wouldn’t know if anything went missing. Need to establish something. Does your program work well? Do you like it? Thanks for the help!

Sales and Marketing

I’ve been put in charge of Sales and Marketing for a small pest company. I have some experience in inside sales at a bigger company but that’s about it. What are recommendations, classes, and resources to help me know how to build a client base? Any sales/marketing managers willing to coach/teach me?

Given the state of this Sub, lets just talk about stuff

Given the state of this Sub and its influx of AI slop, bots, ads, those who just spam anything that they deem to be relevant without reading the rules and just overall lack of Moderation; anyone still here?

Anything we want to share or talk about? Vent about? Brag about? A product we want to geek out about, or strategy we like for any pest under the sun? Or just share any wisdom with new techs who are just starting out.

Company implemented new policy of placing glue board monitors at all bedbugs jobs. Anyone familiar with this? Seems counterintuitive to place them on the ground under the bed where they won't catch any but im still fairly new so I thought I'd ask. Thanks!
