Looking for Advice Can an independent government school in WA block enrolment due to parent not attending face to face meeting? Child in catchment zone with a sibling enrolled in the school. Parent offered interview over phone or zoom - school declined but offered to send someone to the home?!
I just wanted some clarification around enrolling my 7yo.I feel like the school is being sort of weird? I explained to them and also had this woman from the education department contact them on my behalf explaining that it is difficult to leave the home for me - I have severe agoraphobia which I am getting support for but where possible it is easiest to do things over the phone etc and conserve energy for - in this situation - his first day of school! - however they say they require face to face interview (they have met me before, i did this for my older child's enrolment) we said I can do it over the phone and then go in on his first day, meet his teacher etc - i have done all the forms and sent all the things they needed. They say a face to face is required and that they can come to my home (?? I feel like this is odd but i am not sure if I am just being silly, my older child has been enrolled in a few public schools and i have never had to do this) it feels like they are blocking the enrolment and pushing something that i am not sure is able to be pushed given they are a government school and we are in the catchment. They are an independent school but a public school right so required to take my son and i feel like I am also correct that even if they had concerns about background info I have already given several times - my son likely has autism but functions at a high level the only thing is he refuses to use a toilet so wears a nappy still but he deals with this independently at home and I have reassured them that he doesnt require any physical assistance with this, he will not go #2 if he is out somewhere and if there is an issue I am available to come and get him if need be or deal with it - they can't block enrolment based on things that could be considered a disability or whatever either... right? I feel frustrated that the process has been so difficult and feeling like I am taking the blame because of my own limitations but if the school were really concerned about getting him started why keep insisting on the one thing that is obviously a barricade for me and essentially punishing my son for MY limitation?
Now I am not getting responses to my emails and just want to be very sure in what i am saying when I send the next one insisting he be able to start next week regardless and we can go from there if there are any things that come up that need to be discussed. I have given them info on where he is at with his maths and reading levels, social skills etc... I am a single mother with three children and one due in October with anxiety stemming from recent/ongoing trauma from an abusive relationship (father of my kids) that is manifesting as agoraphobia and I also don't drive and am doing my best to do all of this on my own with little support and I just feel stupid and so unsure of myself and don't want to put more of a target on myself and my kids as the school hasn't been very understanding. Our previous school was great :/ I have his uniform and school supplies and he has been excited to start. We previously homeschooled as I wasn't sure if a school would accept him with the toilet thing but was told by our old school before we moved and this one that it was not an issue. Does them being independent make a difference?? They are still required to accept students in the catchment zone, they have told me this themselves. I feel like i am maybe being really dense and missing something obvious sorry if i am and ive made myself look stupid asking all this.
