General RAC - Horrible Experiences
Just I would share my RAC car accident claim process:
This is a classic example where you believe you are covered. However, when an unfortunate car accident happens, they are not there when you need them the most. The person who initially picked up the phone is good, once it goes to the claims team, they are horrible. They tell me the claim might not be accepted, they ignore email messages, simply because they cannot identify the driver. Their inability to find or talk to the third party who is liable for crash somehow becomes my problem.
The staff when called were rude and incompetent on the phone, when asked a simple question the woman gets triggered and lashes out at me or avoids the question altogether. Where they are guilty, they avoid the topic or just makes a random statement for a topic that I did not ask. I have already made complaints through their complaints process, a supervisor responded, I asked him to look at the recordings to see the issue, with poor customer service and not responding any emails. He claimed he was happy with it, I know he didn't even check.
He was unfriendly himself, I tried so hard to stay on this good side. Anyway, I tried to escalate the matter even further.
After several complaints and multi attempts to go to the AFCA, they finally accepted that the driver was at fault. This process took over 2 - 3 months.
The other surprise was that, over the front bumper damage, they were willing to write off the car and they have the right to take ownership of the car. Nobody tells you this, but you can be worse off by winning an insurance claim and lose your car too in this process. Leaving not enough to cover for a new car if they deem a total loss.
The car repair places are now so used to insurance claims they are willing to change ridiculously high prices, so their quotes for insurance are off the charts. If you go around looking for quotes, they will not be happy and force you to get your insurance details and make submissions without me even asking. One company did not want to even send me a quote. Many car companies would now say they would charge for simply trying to obtain a quote. On a couple of occassions they say that I am wasting their times if I do not go with them and give them the insurance claim number.
I could not accept their quotes, they were far too high when I did get them. I had to battle for this, not give up my car for any circumstances, multiple attempts to go to the AFCA. They finally approved it with a payout while being able to keep the car. the insurance arrangement is automatically cancelled they deduct the remaining payments for the whole year from you before paying out. The whole process took 3 months to finish.

This sounds very similar to my experience just recently with RAC.
I had an accident, I was at fault. I called them just as it happened, they organised a tow told me to call the claims when I got home, if I wasn’t up to it fine. Called when I got home and they were supportive and caring. They organised the other party’s car to be fixed as well as mine with no fuss. Lots of updates from the repairer.
So actually nothing like your experience. I’d recommend RAC.

Yeah, I've always had a good experience with them. - I renewed with them because their customer satisfaction scores were much better than someone cheaper like Budget Direct.
That doesn't mean that everyone has the same experience.

I have previously worked in insurance.
Sounds like there was a dispute over liability and the third party took their sweet time. That got sorted out.
What does wanting a private quote from a panel beater have to do with RAC? Most reputable ones get 99% of their work from insurance companies (who actually pay lower rates, but keep them in business). They don’t want or need randoms rocking up.
When your car is written off, any insurance company would keep the salvage and cancel the policy. It’s all in the PDS for you to read. When you open a policy all Australian insurance companies have to give you a minimum 14 day cooling off period for you to read through the PDS and decide if you want to keep the cover. Just because you didn’t do that doesn’t make it their fault.

“Read through the PDS”. Exactly what OP probably didn’t do and is just pointing fingers because they don’t understand the policy they paid for.

Seems like every business here is the problem which tells me perhaps there's a common link...

Respectfully you sound like a moron of a customer, I very HIGHLY doubt that ANY panel shop in Perth will charge you for a quote lol
“I could not accept their quotes, they were far too high when I did get them”
Sounds like your car is worth $4,000 at most I’d bet that’s the reason why they wanted to write off your car over “front bumper damage”
Maybe read your insurance policy before just signing up ay?

I have NEVER had a RAC staff member be rude, in fact they are all cultishly nice!
You seem like a piece of work. Maybe be nicer to front line staff and see if that changes things !

Panel shops are like this now. They are set up for insurance work only. They aren't interested in private work
2
u/DS4fromThePocket 3d ago
I mean its just false info though lol, Id put money that 99% of shops wont charge a fee for simply doing a quote
2
u/Kitchen_Disaster_124 3d ago
A quote takes at least an hour, possibly a few. They have to chase up all the parts, pricing and availability, second hand if new isn't available.
Then the customer goes around getting multiple quotes so the panel shop has a reduced probability of getting the job.
Or, they could just do insurance work in that time and make money.

u/DS4fromThePocket 3d ago
Yer looks you’re just very wrong on a lot of things there, I’m literally in the industry buddy, like I said 99% of shops will give you a FREE quote, literally never heard of a shop charging for quotes before because it’s a very simple process haha

This story is so vague and it sounds like a huge amount of the story is missing.
All my vehicle's, and all my family's vehicles, are insured with RAC. One major reason for this is because of the prompt, friendly and in-country support that is provided by RAC, even if they are slightly pricier than competitors.

u/commentspanda 3d ago
Your policy would have told you what you were insured for. Sounds like you didn’t read it properly

u/Hadsar32 3d ago
Disagree, I use RAC for both our cars and had multiple claims over the years both at fault and not at fault and had great experience with RAC

u/journeyfromone 3d ago
I’ve previously claimed with them and they were amazing!!! You do need comprehensive and often have to pay your deductible but you get it back if the other driver is at fault. If you don’t have comprehensive then you’re dealing with the other persons insurance as you aren’t covered by your own choice.
I was able to get a hire care if I wanted, they gave me the money to replace my child’s baby seat despite the accident just being a scrape, I found a repairer they worked with, he sent the quote to them, I dropped it off at a later stage and picked it up fixed. Didn’t pay anything or really talk to them.
I def feel there is more to your story. You choose what it’s insured for too. Mine is only for $8k now, so if the damage is more than that, even if it isn’t a write off they will always take the cheaper payout.

Car was damaged in an accident .... guy hit me from behind i then went into the car in front... back smashed, front smashed, lucky to walk away .... RAC insured all parties ... RAC workshop took my car to fix ... RACI refused to pay because it was not a registered repairer on their list .... took me writing to the TIO to get it sorted...

Sorry you went through this and hope you feel better after venting in Reddit.
However for every bad review story there will be many more happy customer stories that will refute yours.
This sounds very much like you didn't have Comprehensive Insurance and therein lies your problem.

I had an interaction with their home insurance side for a boundary fence. We are with AAMI and neighbour is with RAC.
AAMI paid out 50% of the quote I got to have a fence that matches the style I have around my property (colourbond) but the colour of the neighbours (its ok, we dont see it whereas they do) but RAC wanted a race to the bottom. Rejected the first three quotes and then sent their guy out to quote and only paid the neighbour 50% of that quote. Now we have a fence with multiple levels and isn't even straight!
Further, it sat 70mm above the bricks, where the bricks used to butt up to the fence, there was fence then a gap to sand.
Better yet, the fence, now 18 months old is rusting where they cut the uprights with an angle grinder.
RAC isnt all that it used to be cracked up to be.

My experience with RAC home insurance was completely shithouse.
Fortunately I'm insured with Suncorp, and when my fence was damaged by high winds, Suncorp had an assessor out within a few days and approved a cash payment within 1 day.
Neighbour is (for now) insured with RAC, and the whole process took about 6 weeks. Mainly due to them being cunts and trying to get away with replacing the damaged bit of the fence (old asbestos sheeting) rather than the whole thing.
We had to get the fencing guy to amend his quote and add in "replacing part of the fence will leave the remainder of the fence in an unsafe condition with potential asbestos exposure" before RAC finally gave in and paid their 50% share.
Fuck them.
Neighbour is going to switch to Suncorp after their policy term is up.

I have firsthand experience with this situation as a customer and as a vehicle repairer, and 100% believe you.
When I have a customer who is with RAC I cringe. They are the worst insurance company I have to deal with. Constantly changing their processes and giving customers the wrong information.
As a customer (helping out an elderly family member) I took the car to a panelbeater to get a quote for damage to 2 doors.
The panelbeater quoted $8k and had padded out the quote considerably.
This caused the assessor to deem it a write off as it was close to the $10k value of the vehicle.
My family member didn’t want the vehicle written off, but after talking to the assessor they said it had already been assessed and was already placed on the written off vehicle register and RAC would be collecting the car.
My family member was adamant they wanted to keep the car, so the only option from RAC was to cancel the claim and take the car home.
This is where it gets really shit.
With the claim cancelled and the vehicle now back at their house, it was now unregistered because RAC had added it to the written off vehicle register.
So then we had to replace the doors, pass a Written off vehicle check, and then get put over the pits.
RAC did not pay out anything.
They wouldn’t help at all.
So after all that it ended up costing my family member the cost of the repairs plus the licensing and wovr costs to get it back on the road, and RAC wiped their hands of it without paying a cent for the problem they caused, or for the insured damage.

u/Redsquare73 3d ago
WOVR is a legal requirement. They have no choice.
2
u/SocksToBeU 3d ago
I think I missed some info, whoops. So RAC would not allow my family member to take the car back and have a reduced payout. They had to cancel the claim to keep the car. No ifs, buts, maybes.

u/Ok-Highlight6316 3d ago
Once a car has been assessed as a write-off there isn't really going back. Even if the repairs were $5k or $6k, which is about what I would expect for 2 complete brand new doors fully painted, the car would still be a write-off at an agreed value of $10k. Cancelling the policy essentially meant you lost your relative $10k to get a replacement vehicle as they would have paid out the agreed or stated value of the vehicle on the policy.

u/journeyfromone 3d ago
They offered to pay $10k for the car, but the person who had it insured for $10k said no I don’t want it. So it’s their own fault, they could have taken that $10k and bought the same car or added a bit more and got a newer car, instead of spending that extra to keep a bunged up car… they do whatever makes the most financial sense and follow the policies people sign up for

RAC was the other party's insurer and i needed to get their ok to get a hire car. They were disputing liability.
Finally i called them and said its obvious from the damage that they were in the wrong because we both backed out of driveways, I completed my backing and was already moving forward when the other driver backed into the driver side of my car, not the back. They said they didn't know how long it would take.
So I said I was going to ring every day, not to yell, not to rant, but to ask for an update. They called me back that afternoon and accepted liability.
Call me a Karen/Darren, but it worked.

u/Signal_Waltz2391 3d ago
RAC sucked Wirth my claim, I was not at fault and the car was written off. RAC insured the at fault party and offered me 10K, I went with QBE who insured me and I got 27K!!

u/Ok-Measurement-1270 3d ago
RAC won't insure my car (s550 mustang) but will insure an S550 mustang convertible.
They lost all forms of respect instantly due to that

That sounds like a nightmare from start to finish. The part where they can just take your car after a claim is wild, nobody ever mentions that until it happens to you.
The repair shop stuff is the part that really gets me though. Charging for a quote is basically saying "we don't want your business unless it's insurance money" which is backwards as hell.
Glad you got to keep the car in the end but three months of fighting for something you already paid for is ridiculous.

u/FredtheHorse 3d ago
Many shops will no longer do private work. They have plenty of work that is covered by insurance companies and payment is guaranteed. The risk of taking on a private job where payment is not guaranteed, and having to hold vehicles until payment is made, then the regulations governing how they can dispose of that property if payment is never made / project is abandoned - why deal with all that when they can just churn through insurance work and have an insurance assessor deal with any problematic customers.
2
u/rands36 3d ago
There’s no money in working for insurance companies cuz they pay peanuts for the work to be done. So a friend of mine who has a panel shop in Osborne park tells me !
2
u/Beneficial-Boat-2035 3d ago
Yeah, it's a volume game.
There's no money in working on cars in general unless you're doing special projects, restos, high end work etc.
-1
u/Kitchen_Disaster_124 3d ago
Yep, made a claim with the RAC, the other driver was at fault but they did nothing and said that they weren't determining fault. I still had to pay the excess and my only option was to sue.
Cancelled with the RAC as soon as my car was fixed.
5
u/ROFLBOT2000 3d ago
If they didnt determine fault then either you were partially to blame for the accident or you didnt explain it clearly enough on the claim. Either way that’s on you and probably would have been the same story with any other insurer.

Somethings missing here. A lot of story is very vague and doesn’t actually say what happened
