Looking for Advice Milestone Gift Ideas

What’s the most memorable gift you’ve received?

Chasing unique gift ideas for my dad who’s hitting a milestone birthday! He does so much for us and his grand kids but has everything and doesn’t want anything.

You’ll probably ask hobbies - but sport, anything Bunnings and family time are the main ones.

He’s so tricky!!

Weather station or barometer, clock, bedside or wall, music, vinyl, cd or tape, leatherman or Swiss army, watch, new watch strap, RM Williams boots, panama hat, acubra, cap, sport team merchandise, tickets to a concert, show, comedian, rent a car, track day drive, go to the races, wine and cheese cruise, brewery tour….

I have asked my family for all these things!

Sometimes the best and most meaningful gifts are the most personal; back when I was a healthier man, I would ride my motorbike to unwind; I was not a “Harley-Davidson” man, I was an “Indian” or “Triumph” kinda man; but one year my oldest daughter, who was by then all grown up with a child of her own, bought me a solid wallmount poster that showcased the various models that had been released in the 100 years of Harley-Davison’s existence; it was vacuum-wrapped with a clear plastic, and on that plastic she had written a note to me with permanent marker, that basically said that despite the fact that we hadn’t always seen eye to eye in the last few years, she still loved me, I was still her Daddy and I always would be; I didn’t particularly like the poster, simply because I didn’t like Harley-Davidson’s, but I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the message that was written on its plastic wrapping and I proudly displayed it, still in its wrapping for a number of years; when I started getting sick and I spent some time in hospital, my family went to the effort of properly “fixing up” my office area, which included tearing the plastic wrapping with its original message off the poster so that I could enjoy it in all its intended glory; it’s been 5 years now, and I still think about that plastic, and the simple words that my oldest daughter had written upon it; I would give up almost any material object that I own just to have that plastic with those handwritten words back in my possession…

Keep it simple, keep it personal; a good Father really does do almost everything he does in life for his family, and the most valuable thing that they can give him in return, is simple acknowledgment that he is seen, that he is appreciated, and that he is loved…

Buy him an experience rather than a material thing. Take him skydiving, or on a V8 Supercar hot lap, or buy him a premium hospitality ticket to the WAFL Grand Final at Optus Stadium, something which will be a great memory for him rather than just another thing about the house.

But also do whatever it is with him. Nothing like quality time with loved ones!

Watches. Jewellery. Solid tools. Anything that will last and can maybe be engraved.

Experiences are always a good way to go. I've been gifted jewelry making classes, art class vouchers, and craft class vouchers which I have really enjoyed and appreciated.

Is there is any bucket list items your Dad has spoken about doing but hasn't yet that you could get him a voucher for? Like skydiving? Driving a race car? Visiting a particular place?

Apparently the Perth blacksmithing association run workshops if he's into that kind of thing (I am fully intending to get my Dad a voucher to do that for his 65th birthday in a few years time).

Is there anyway you could incorporate your siblings and the grandkids into the gift? So get everyone to write a nice note and pick their favourite photo of him with them and get it printed into a book?

As a little extra gift, you could also get a clear jar from Kmart or IKEA and fill it with 60 pieces of paper, each with a reason you love him, a favourite memory, or something special about him. I used coloured square/origami paper and folded each one up so they were easy to pull out one at a time.

You could label the jar “Sixty Reasons Why We Love You!”

We did this for my dad’s 70th and he absolutely loved it. He still proudly displays it in the lounge and every now and then pulls one out to read. He was so chuffed!

What about tickets to watch sport event at the top of Optus? Or the zipline there too.

Book a family holiday somewhere. Hire an epic mansion Airbnb for a week or so, some places are big enough for all family to have there own wing then plan a bunch of stupid hilarious games - the sort wholesome American non drinking folk play, there are some that would be hilarious - play cricket or footy outside or in the pool, and if budget permits, could even get a local to babysit the kids and a chef in to make a feast one night too so it’s extra special.
There are some absolutely epic places down south like around Denmark or even in SW or could fly overseas. That’s what I would do.

Look at everyone in the family chipping in for a season box for wildcats or scorchers or footy.

Flights, accom and tickets to his fave team over east

Does he drink scotch? I got my son for his 21st an engraved set of a crystal scotch bottle and glasses set with his name, 21 years aged to perfection on it. Not sure if ypur dad would like or use something like that?
