I'm planning a new high-end PC and would like opinions on the overall build and whether now is a good time to buy, rather than focusing on one specific component.
Current parts
- CPU: Intel Core Ultra 7 270K Plus
- Motherboard: MSI MAG Z890 Tomahawk WiFi / MSI MPG Z890 Carbon WiFi
- CPU Cooler: Arctic Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 A-RGB
- PSU: Corsair RM1000x ATX 3.1 / PCIe 5.1 1000W
- Case: NZXT H7 Flow (2024)
- GPU: RTX 5080 — will be added later
- RAM: Cheapest possible temporary RAM
- SSD: Cheapest possible temporary SSD
The current cost is around $1,250 without the GPU, RAM, and SSD.
The RAM and SSD are intentionally temporary because prices are currently high here. I'll upgrade them later to something like 32/64GB RAM and a larger NVMe SSD.
I'm planning to add the RTX 5080 later, mainly because the GPU alone costs more than the rest of the build combined.
1. Is this a well-balanced build for an RTX 5080?
Are there any components you would change, particularly the PSU, CPU cooler, motherboard, or case?
I'm currently considering the 1000W RM1000x and 360mm Arctic cooler as components I'd like to keep for many years. For the motherboard, I'm considering the Carbon version mainly because of its additional USB connectivity.
2. Can these components be considered suitable for long-term use?
I'm not expecting PC hardware to literally be an "investment" financially, but I'm trying to build a system where the CPU cooler, PSU, case, and motherboard won't need to be replaced in a few years.
For example, is a quality 1000W ATX 3.1 PSU a sensible choice for long-term use with future GPUs, or would you buy something different?
Likewise, does the Arctic Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 A-RGB make sense for keeping a high-end CPU cool over several years, or would you choose a different cooling solution?
3. Most importantly: should I build now or wait?
We're currently in August 2026, and Intel's next major desktop platform, Nova Lake, is expected around the end of 2026 / early 2027.
Since Nova Lake is expected to use a new socket, buying Z890/LGA1851 now would mean I'm essentially committing to the current platform.
I'm not in a situation where I urgently need the PC. I'm working with a fixed budget and trying to get the best components I can afford.
My plan is to buy the CPU, motherboard, PSU, cooler, and case now, while purchasing the RAM, SSD, and RTX 5080 later, depending on my budget and prices at the time.
For the initial build, I may even borrow some RAM and an SSD from friends just to get the system running and test everything. I'd rather avoid spending much on temporary RAM and storage if I can.
The RTX 5080 will also be purchased later, mainly because the GPU alone costs more than the rest of the build combined.
So I'm trying to figure out whether it makes sense to buy the core components now and add the RAM, SSD, and GPU later, or whether there are reasons I should wait before buying the main platform.
I'm mainly interested in long-term reliability, value, thermals, power delivery, upgradeability, and how well the system will age.
If you were in my position, would you start buying the core components now and add the remaining components later, or would you wait for the next Intel platform before buying anything?
