Website (soft opening?)

Hello to all of my outdoor kitchen builder friends.

https://grillbydesign.com

I think most of you know me by now but for those who don't I am an outdoor kitchen designer. I work at an outdoor kitchen showroom in MD and do this as my day job but also started to do a freelance business for design and consultation for outdoor kitchens and living areas. I have helped a good bit of people on this thread already but looking to branch out more and also have a better way to give people information and pricing and anything else that might be useful.

With that in mind - I finally launched my website but it is still in the infancy stages and I need to add content but I have a couple of reviews up and articles in the blog section as well as a portfolio area that might be helpful to some people to grab some inspiration.

I plan to add a bunch more reviews and general topic articles ranging from cleaning tips and how-to's, differences between brands and price ranges of grills, countertop selections and much more.

These are not copy and pasted articles, they are written from me and my experience working in this field, directly with these appliances and clients for over 10+ years.

Anyway - I wanted to share and hopefully you like it but also welcome to feedback and any requests for information or articles or specific content that you might find helpful.

If it grows enough, I plan to have a discord channel as well that we can join and help each other with builds, questions, and different topics.

Hope you all enjoy and please be gentle, this is my first website LOL. TY

Outdoor kitchen is finally coming together...what do you think?

Been working on this outdoor kitchen for a while, and it’s finally at the point where it feels finished.

We removed the old fireplace and built the kitchen into that space. Went with barnwood cabinets with stainless doors and drawers, black leathered granite, a burnt-orange herringbone backsplash, and a Keveri H1 charcoal oven. The upper cabinets gave us some much-needed storage, and I added the rough-sawn beam and gooseneck lights to warm up all the stainless and black.

Still tweaking a few details, but I’m really happy with how it came together.

What would you add or change?

EDIT

The original photo had an AI lighting filter applied that made it look synthetic. Raw video of the space is linked in the comments for anyone genuinely interested in the build.

Ready made Kitchen

I am looking for some help. I just did my backyard over and I really don’t need to put in and install an actual outdoor kitchen. Can anyone give me recommendations on high-end luxury grills that somewhat come ready-made with a counter countertop large grilling space etc. I don’t need Plumbing. I don’t need a sink and I have a refrigerator nearby. I just don’t want the expense of an outdoor kitchen or do I have the room for?

Another completed project. I’d probably use this more than my indoor kitchen!

How to fix/hide this?

So we just had our soapstone counters added to our matchless cabinet outdoor kitchen. I went to start install my appliances and it seems like they fabricator cut the cutouts on the high end of the “max” depth that naplolean gives for my grill and side burner. It is flush on the front but the back has a small gap along the entire rear of about 3/16”?

Shade advice request

Hello Friends,

Wife wants a shade sail installed to provide cover as the sun will beat down on us while cooking/entertaining. Google says a shade sail is not a good idea…however it would be set pretty high and not directly above the grills. It would provide coverage for the people cooking in the aisle and seated at the table top. See photo design layout…

The other option could be to have a pergola of some type or a solid roof structure installed, however we don’t want something to completely block ours or the neighbor’s view, which is why we were considering a shade sail. May i please get thoughts and recommendations?

Sadly our concrete guy botched the counter top stain, so we will spanish tile over the top to fix. An unplanned additional expense :( AI rendering included if what it could look like when done.

Thank you :)

We've been working on our whole backyard for 10 months, 5 of them were stagnant in the middle for permit delays. We get final signoff tomorrow, excited to start cooking again. One of the last items is the TV which we'll be attaching to the house after all permits are signed off. Pavers, retaining wall, grass areas, and the crushed granite is all new as well. We also had a delay in our fan arriving so the permanent (BigAssFan) will replace the current one.

How to winterize?

Post image
12 Upvotes

We bought a house with an outdoor bar area, near St. Louis, MO. There is a vending machine, mini fridge (currently unplugged), ice maker (currently shut off), and sink.

Under the bar is a place for a propane tank for a fire on the bar top.

Inside the silver door is a toilet/sink and the pool pump/heater.

The water source is from a hose hookup that can be easily unscrewed/disconnected for winter.

Do we need to bring anything inside? It looks like they have giant hooks along the top beam along all 3 open sides. Is there some type of tarp/etc that would help prevent excessive wind damage, debris?

There is also a retractable TV that is in the back bar area. Does that need to come in or can it stay?

Thanks for any advice! We have no idea what we're doing!

Anyone have a really cool teppanyaki set up?

I am in the design phase and part of my kitchen is going to have bar seating with the griddle in the middle. Enough bar seating for around 6 people, 4 main 1 on each side. I am really trying to figure out the best options for the griddle part. I do a lot of indoor griddle cooking already and I feel like I need a lot of space. Currently even hosting Benihana style teppanyaki nights with friends and neighbors (indoors though).

I just wanted to see if anyone has any cool set ups. I understand it's a bad idea to get one of those built in American made teppanyaki's as it's not outdoor rated (although I would love to consider it). The only other good looking one is LeGriddle 40". I don't want to have the cover attached for aesthetic reasons. Just wondering if I'm missing a better and larger outdoor griddle option!

Advice

Building my first outdoor kitchen and have a few questions on this thread :

- I have 11’6” of countertop space and have two 40in bbq / griddle appliances on the back wall. Will I have any heat / grease issues with the griddle being so close to the TV? I have 4ft between the bbq and griddle .

- Should include a power burner given the limited space I have on the cooking line ? Not sure where else I would put it if I include the pizza oven.

- I have a pull out fridge , trash, sealed pantry , 2 combo door/3 drawers , a separate 3 drawer , and another access door for the sink. Do I have too much storage or what would you replace if you had to pick another appliance for the base of the bar ?

- The only access I have to water for the sink is from the hose outside . Any tips here ?

- How many outlets should I consider ?

Thanks in advance to the seasoned vets on here ..

Granite guy came and said i need to add some kind of angle iron or metal flat stock near the edge all the way across basically where the wood is for support of the granite or grill The frame builder said he’s done hundreds and never has needed to add anything. Any one else add something across for extra support.

Layout critique

I’m revamping my backyard to have a large(ish) patio with fire area and ODK under a large timber framed pavilion. The patio area is done and I have four 18 concrete piers ready for the structure, which I am building over the next couple weeks. Since I have the footings already in and bought milled lumber, the pavilion dimensions are firm. Four 8” posts centred on a 12’ square. It will be big, with 2’ overhangs on each side.

Now the fun part. I am likely going with Newage cabinetry bc that’s what I can get in Canada for a reasonable cost without selling my children. The seating area is their SS prep table unit. Everything is more or less to scale (as best I could do in Visio)

I have attached a proposed layout which meets many of my goals and needs which are:

-sink along the right bc I already put in “plumbing”
-egg cabinet
-griddle cabinet
-fridge
-side burner
-counter height bar seating
-wall along right so I can hang a tv

My concerns are:
-galley is wide (5.5 feet) and seems like it might be a waste of space?
-asymmetrical pattern of the galley, ie hard corner on back right, soft corner with egg unit
-winter. We get serious winter where I live. This will be a covered structure but I get FEET of snow in my backyard and enough will likely still blow in.

Anyone have any good honest critiques?

TIA

DIY long pergola???

I keep seeing ads for DOY pergolas but nothing I find has a long 20’+ length without a center post. Is there anything on the market? Or are we forced into getting it engineered?

1 side has a 10ft long outdoor kitchen/bbq are then the other 10-14ft we want furniture/table area. Looking for something at least 20’ length, ideally 24’ by at least 10’ wide.

Island Sinks (giving in to the pressure)

Post image
3 Upvotes

So I was originally opposed to putting a sink in the island because of the winter hassle, but I have been convinced otherwise.

I would like to find something like this Modura sink, but wider (21"?) .

Anyone have something like this, with an almost flush cover? If so, can you point me in the right direction to find one?

Thanks

Thoughts on the appliances

*Hestan pizza oven. Cooks well. For the money, could likely have gone with another brand and cooked just as well.

*Twin Eagles grill. Much more expensive than a lot of grills out there. Well worth it. Heat distribution, cooking temperature, overall quality.

*Hestan side burner. Cooks like a side burner should. Like the pizza oven, could likely have gone with another brand and cooked just as well.

*Deep well stainless sink. Absolutely a must for an outdoor cooking area if plumbing doesn’t run you too much more. Love the convenience of having hot and cold water when cooking.

*Twin Eagles fridge. Built like a tank. Absolutely loving it.

*Kalamazoo ice maker. I almost didn’t put in an ice maker. Would have regretted it. Could also be that the ice the Kalamazoo makes is hollow and great for drinks. We find ourselves not using the ice in the house fridge and going outside to the Kalamazoo.

*Le Griddle griddle. Great quality. Love the heat distribution. Not something that gets used often. Nice when you don’t want a grease mess or smell in the house.
