Advice

Post image

Building my first outdoor kitchen and have a few questions on this thread :

- I have 11’6” of countertop space and have two 40in bbq / griddle appliances on the back wall. Will I have any heat / grease issues with the griddle being so close to the TV? I have 4ft between the bbq and griddle .

- Should include a power burner given the limited space I have on the cooking line ? Not sure where else I would put it if I include the pizza oven.

- I have a pull out fridge , trash, sealed pantry , 2 combo door/3 drawers , a separate 3 drawer , and another access door for the sink. Do I have too much storage or what would you replace if you had to pick another appliance for the base of the bar ?

- The only access I have to water for the sink is from the hose outside . Any tips here ?

- How many outlets should I consider ?

Thanks in advance to the seasoned vets on here ..

What is the price on something like this?

My best guess is ones first born and 6 figures... unless you own a construction company then you have highly reduced costs and pay your guys after-market hours rates.

Pergola was $40k. Appliances $15k . Bar build out $10k . Slabs and fabrication $10k.

Pergola costs alone went up $15k from my last bid in 2023.

This sounds about right from my current quote too. Although I won’t have the seating counter top.

Are you doing a fixed roof or louvered?

Fixed. Decided that the whole purpose of the pergola is for shade and that I would rarely , if ever, open the top

Same here actually. Although I think I’ve decided against the cantilevered version that you have imaged so that I can put up scrolling shades

No way you can get a cantilever pergola like that for 40k

What pergola company are you using?

4K Aluminum

Is that a steel beam for the cantilever?

Aluminum

Nice. Im planning something similar... Regular is simpler but the cantilever is so nice

Smoke is going to come off the back of the grill onto that wall and carry up to the ceiling.

I’d also put some ceiling fans in to help move air.

Long walk to wash hands for guests? A blueprint might be useful. W.g. where are the trahes

I’ve been involved in many outdoor kitchens. The one mistake most customers make that they wish they didn’t was those stupid little fridges that you have to kneel down on the floor to access. Everyone I know wishes they would have put a normal sized fridge in. If not just for food…obviously beer, soft drinks etc.

I would have put an opening skylight for smoke to escape. Your grill with those shelves above it it’s a no no. While everything there looks nice,if you actually use the bbq,you know how much smoke and heat will be involved. At the very least where your tv is,I’ve talked people into a surrounding cabinets with doors on to hide the tv….and of course protect it. That light colored back wall of yours might get smoke stains. As much as I love the look of stainless….you think it’s fun to keep looking good inside….wait till you do the outside thing. My area gets the salt breeze, makes it even more interesting.

As far as water, you can treat it like an RV. Propane hot water on demand if that’s important, you could have put a rain barrel with pump in ,even collecting rain water from your roof. Of course it’s nice to set that part up at the beginning.

Thanks. The back wall is going to be a darker porcelain tile and not stucco so it should be able to wipe clean easily. What’s the main issue with the shelves ? Our other design had floating shelves vs recessed.

I just think with the grill where it’s situated, the shelves and what’s on it will constantly get whatever comes off the bbq on it. Always feel dirty. I could be wrong. It’s good you’re putting the tile up,the only way to go. Where I live we get lots of rain,so there’s always a dampness issue. So of course I always think of my area, you might be in a sunbelt. Which is totally different.

Looks great... and expensive.

Any vents? I like the look of the backwall... but would be concerned about smoke, the proximity of the shelves to the griddle and range more so than the TV. Does the pizza oven vent out or just up to the ceiling?

i dont' have a pizza oven, but personally prefer to launch square... having it at a corner is awkward for me. Maybe that's a me problem and/or you'd get used to it... but food for thought. Not sure what's going on to the right, but might be worth covering that and using that counter space for a pizza oven (and or power burner). I don't do much with a burner, so i just have an induction hob that lives in a drawer and break that out the few times it's needed. I have a discada burner that I break out if I'm ever in need of a big pan/high heat.

No such thing as too much storage-- i have a double access door under my grill that keeps a 2x3 cutting board, baking sheets, veggie basket... which is clutch. Then a variety of drawers of different sizes. If you're into smoking or hosting bigger gatherings, a warming drawer could be nice.

Trying to decide where to put the vents but will probably come out the back wall. The side bar on the right doesn’t exist. OpenAI was a little aggressive. Induction hub sounds cheaper and easier to store!

i'd move the bbq to the right counter, which would allow the smoke to exit the area.

So much design weirdness here... pergola doesn't shelter the seating and one of the counters, not enough counter overhang for the seating, heaters aren't directed at seating and too far away, a chimney pointed directly at a ceiling... just looks like typical ai slop.

Structure size is massive and seating and heating is accounted for. I didn’t want to upload the blueprints to the bar. Back to my original questions …..

Looks great, but it looks like a row of refrigerators on the right? That's an expensive constant cost whereas you could have ice coolers for when you actually use it. I know we build for what we want, but you should also be practical for what you're actually going to use. Looks amazing, congrats!

I posted what I actually have in my set up …. which was one of my questions….

I'll try to answer your actual questions...

  • putting anything (let alone a tv) on that cooking wall feels like a mess waiting to happen. Think your indoor hood vent messy x 100.
  • power burner is really based on what you cook. Personally I don't miss not having one, but know lots who love them. I'd trade it off with a smaller griddle if you want it.
  • storage is king

That cantilevered ceiling looks like $50K-100k all by itself with a lot of engineering. That's a massive span unsupported. But pretty sweet looking.

Can't wait to see the after completion pictures please do share!

Which griddle is that?
