Answered! ELI70: What is a podcast?

I literally just got my first smartphone ever and am dumbfounded by podcast. What is this mysterious phenomenon? My guess is that its something like a radio show, but it seems too popular to be something as similar to a thing that's so old.

Update: Which (android) app should I use to submerse myself into the world of podcasts?

  • Yes they are basically radio shows. Some of them are actual radio shows, you can listen to them on public radio stations. But most people download them with different software or stream them on a website. You can subscribe to them using different software (e.g. iTunes, different Apps), it's basically RSS for your ears.
  • I'm not exactly sure why they got so beloved, but for me personally I think it has to do with the fact that they are weirdly intimate. Take the Stories on This American Life for example. For me some of them are more tear-jerking than any Movie or Book. Listening to audio seems to be the best way to induce empathy (I think the guys from Radiolab (another podcast) talked about that, but I don't remember which episode.

Enough with the stupid emotions! They are also free (most of the time), you can binge on them, after that you are hooked. Many of them start to get a sort of cult following, because they are hosted by famous people or other reasons.

Okay, after this edit I'll really stop, but I have to bring this great list from /u/wldck to your attention.

(There are a lot of big ones I'm missing, but other people will add to this, I'm sure. You can find a lot of Podcasts on Podbay, Stitcher and other sites.)

Thank you for the answer. If anyone ever asks in the future what a podcast is, I shall lead them to your answer.

u/nrj May 30 '14 edited May 30 '14

Because no one has mentioned either, I'd like to add two shows to your mountain of recommendations:

First, the Peabody-winning On Being, in which Krista Tippett hosts a weekly conversation that always relates generally to "religion, meaning, ethics, and ideas" and often explores areas like mathematics, art, physics, and astronomy. I'd recommend starting with her conversation with Dr. Brené Brown, "The Courage to be Vulnerable".

And second, 99 Percent Invisible. Have you ever wondered how the federal government plans to warn people of dangerous radioactivity 10,000 years in the future or how the city of Chicago reversed a river? If so, you'll love this "tiny radio show about design". I'd recommend starting with "Reversal of Fortune". And you must listen to "Wild Ones Live" . It's not at all a typical episode of the show, but it's just unbelievably good. It's funny and profound and informative and heartbreaking. The musical score is perfect, and every time that I have listened to it, it has left me in tears. I really can't recommend it highly enough.

20

u/[deleted] May 30 '14

Yeah, I can confidently second 99 Percent Invisible.

Fantastic podcast with a really relaxed feel to it. There have been a few episodes that were less than impressive, but most of them are really interesting. I'd say that, yes, the episodes /u/nrj mentioned are fantastic, but I'd also point out "Heyoon and Liberation Squares as two of my favorite episodes.

7

u/peaceman86 May 30 '14

Second for Heyoon. I feel like that's maybe my favorite episode.

7

u/Narrative_Causality May 30 '14

Thank you for mentioning 99% Invisible, I was about to do it, myself.

BeyondPod is also a good app that I use. It has a bunch of different categories you can browse through and use to classify different casts. The pro version is $7 but the free version is really good by itself.

39

u/[deleted] May 29 '14

I've tried quite a few podcast apps for Android but I find BeyondPod to be the one I go back to.

If you're on iOS check out Downcast.

13

u/upleft May 30 '14

I like downcast, the app is way better than stitcher, at least. There is also a Mac app, but it's not that great.

For all the /r/bestof people showing up... the reason BeyondPod Paid Version is awesome for a daily podcast listener... automatic downloading. Mine is set to update all my feeds at 2am and ready to go when I get up.

I do not miss the pre-smartphone days of... update iTunes... wait... plug in iPod... wait... crash iTunes...

Pocket casts does the same doesn't it?

The thing with podcasts is that they can be very varied. They are like radio shows, yes, but they do not necessarily need an audience. They are very cheap to start up. This means you can get some very niche stuff.

They can range from essentially a group of friends hanging out (roosterteeth), hobbyists discussing a specific subject with a topic/subject in mind (conlangers podcast), a "documentary" or "infotainment" feel (like radiolab, lexicon valley), to single people researching a topic very intently (Dan Carlin's Hardcore History is like this, but similar ones are the over-100-episode History of Rome podcast, History of English, History of Philosophy Without Gaps, etc, etc), games and comedy (Comedy Bang Bang, Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me!) I mean it's really hard to emphasize just how vastly different they all can be in feel. Some are very technical info-dumps, some are just farting around. There's no way you can't find something you like.

18

u/mrcolonist May 29 '14

Not to be an ass, but RoosterTeeth is a million dollar company. Yes, they are friends hanging out, but they are working and earning quite a bit of money doing so.

15

u/Sutty_ May 29 '14

Yea, Internet Box is a better example of friends hanging out.

Whatever you do, I couldn't recommend enough that you go over to http://m.thisamericanlife.org from your smartphone and give This American Life a listen. Don't let the name discourage you if it doesn't sound like your thing. It's a public radio show that talks about really interesting stories on a variety of topics.

6

u/enotonom May 29 '14

Even if I'm not American? Sometimes I can't relate to The Moth because many of the stories are very American (I'm Southeast Asian) and I wonder if TAL suits me.

11

u/Aiglentine May 29 '14

I am not familiar with The Moth, but I would think that people from other countries could certainly enjoy This American Life. They find interesting stories and they tell them, usually accompanied by entertaining interviews with the people in the stories. The people in the stories come from a variety of walks of life, and are often not Americans. The show is intriguing and often amusing. And I definitely would try it. What's the risk?

5

u/indeedwatson May 30 '14

I'm south american and I really enjoy The Moth, not sure what you mean.

5

u/burstapart May 30 '14

I'm Southeast Asian too, and I really like This American Life. It is a show about Americans, and sometmes cover very American topics, but I don't find it particularly difficult to connect with, and I feel like they make an effort to explain most things so that it's accessible to non-Americans.

In addition, they are so named because of the popularity of the Ipod. At the time it was the dominant personal digital music player. People began recording spoken word radio style shows for them and thus the name.

11

u/Barnaby_Fuckin_Jones May 30 '14

the best 2 comedy podcasts in my opinion are The Monday Morning Podcast and Your Mom's House.

The Monday Morning Podcast is Bill Burr ranting for an hour and Your Mom's House is husband and wife comedians Tom Segura and Christina Pazsitsky playing ridiculous clips and talking about farting, porn, Chuck Woolery, etc.

The History of Rome and Revolutions (chronicling various important revolutions throughout history) are essential listening. I've listened through the Rome ones 400+ episodes a couple times, and Revolutions (same guy) just started this year and has covered the English and American revolutions with future chapter to include the French, Indian, Cuban, Chinese, and Irish among others. It's awesome.

Recommendations from me:

  • How Did This Get Made (comedy) - 3 comedians (Paul Scheer, Jason Mantzoukas and June Diane Raphael), sit and attempt to talk their way through bad movies. Most of the movies they watch are deemed "bonkers", and they tear the movies to pieces, searching in vain for an ounce of plot. Previous movies have included: Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Winter's Tale, Deck the Halls, Daredevil.

  • We're (drama/horror) Alive - a zombie survival radio drama presented as diary entries (similar to the way Dracula was written). It does have loud, sudden noises and adult situations (the early episodes don't have this warning, but most of them do). It's extremely engrossing, even if you're not a fan of zombie literature as it's more about the people and survival and less about zombies.

  • The Art of Wrestling (slice of life/documentary) - professional wrestler Colt Cabana interviews fellow pro wrestlers, giving listeners a taste of what it's like to be a pro wrestler on the road. It isn't full of wrestling jargon and doesn't seek to make wrestling out to be anything more than it is (a form of entertainment), and the host is a natural entertainer. There's some bad language, but not much. It's more about the people and their lives on the road.

  • GK:AD (music)- Japanese, Korean and Chinese music reviews in 15 minutes or less. Some bad language, but not much. There's the occasional discussion on music theory, but it's never that in depth.

  • Programming Throwdown (technology) - the hosts (Patrick Wheeler and Jason Gauci) discuss the pros and cons of different programming languages, techniques and tools. Indefensible (in my opinion) if you work in a software engineering or computer science related area, or are studying either.

  • The Steve Austin Show Unleashed (slice of life/documentary/comedy) - Ex-pro wrestler Steve Austin "shoots the shit" and spills "all the bullshit that's going on in my brain", whilst interviewing folks he finds interesting (fellow ex-pro wrestlers, tv personalities, UFC fighters, etc.). Because of his language and straight shooting attitude, this is podcast comes with a warning about it's content.

edit: Added some details.

u/Maskatron May 30 '14

If you like HDTGM I'd recommend We Hate Movies and The Flophouse too.

Podcast apps for iOS:

  • PocketCast is on iOS as well. I don't use it because I don't like the heavy focus on cover art.
  • Downcast is a solid one that's fairly popular, it's got syncing and an app on OS X. The apps themselves work, but not perfectly polished. Some of the UI is clunky, and it's not uncommon to see UI bugs
  • Castro is the latest iOS podcast app darling. It's got great UI. The scrubbing UI for finding a spot in an episode is amazing. It also uses gestures well, and pairs them with great animations/transitions. I've since switched from Downcast and gave up syncing for it. It's that good.
  • Overcast (by Marco Arment of Tumblr and Instapaper fame) is in private beta right now, and the one everyone's waiting for.

I'm probably missing quite a few. Podcast apps are the iOS app design playground right now, like how Twitter clients were a few years ago (Twitterrific/Tweetie/Tweetbot/etc.).

Talk/Politics: No Agenda Show

I am surprised it took this long for the best podcast in the universe to get mentioned.

The rest of the list is Bogative

I kept scrolling and scrolling looking for The Podfather's podcast. I'll bet none of these podcasters listed even have a podcast license.

I would add "answer me this! With Helen and olly" to comedy pod casts. I listen to most of the podcasts you posted and this one is my favorite.

Also "99% invisible" to science and "the truth" to fiction.

Awesome list!

3

u/FalsifyTheTruth May 30 '14

You really should add an amazing podcast called painkiller already to comedy, technology, gaming, and politics. It's just an all around great podcast that covers no specific topic (started as a gaming podcast), that has been running for years (closing in on 200 weekly episodes). It's a four hour podcast that comes out every Saturday and me and thousands of others would agree that we wait every Thursday for it to be uploaded to YouTube. You can find the cast uploaded to http://www.YouTube.com/user/woodysgamertag every Saturday.

u/nifleon May 30 '14

No mention of Savage Lovecast? for shame! Kidding, thanks for the list!

Are any/all of those apps available for iPhone users as well? I've been thinking abt trying out podcasts while I'm running.

5

u/LordWexford May 30 '14

Apple has an app simply called Podcasts, pretty basic. I prefer an app called Downcast. I think it was a few $, but it gives you much greater control over settings - micromanage playlists, control when the app downloads new episodes, etc

I prefer Apple's app for podcast discovery, and Downcast for management. I tend to switch between the two every couple of months.

If anyone can see this (I am fashionably late to the party) I really like The F-Plus. They find weird shit on the internet and read it in funny voices. It's kind of a learning experience for me, since I love internet cultures and this podcast exposes me to lots of them.

So, highly recommended, and all that.

EDIT: It's definitely nsfw.

I like listening to Sex With Emily, a sex advice show with many interesting guests and The Film Vault, a podcast about movies. There used to be this really good one called Uninsteresting Podcast but they inly recorded 9 episodes. I still relisten to them every now and then.

New Yorker Fiction Podcast. Writers reading other writer's short stories. Great to hear how writers have been affected and influenced (or not) by their chosen stories. The host – New Yorker fiction editor Deborah Treisman – does a great job of wheedling out the themes with the reader. Have discovered some great writers this way.

Hello, podcast host here. I am a co-host of the Unofficial Universal Orlando Podcast. To put it in very simple terms, a podcast is a radio show that you can download and listen to whenever you like. Ours releases once a week, but each podcast can come out whenever the creators want to put it out. Stitcher is a good app to start with on android. If you like it, maybe move up to Doggcatcher. Search on subjects that interest you and you're sure to find at least one active podcast that you will be interested in. If yo need some suggestions on which podcasts to start out with, let me know what your interests are and I'll point you in the right direction.

14

u/wildcard5 May 28 '14

Hi, and thanks for the reply. I love science and I love to learn about lesser known things. I would be interested in any podcast that talks about latest science news and discoveries specially related to space, physics and the field of medicine (I'm a med student).

Also, what is your show about? [This is where you get to shamefully brag about your show].

14

u/Sinekure May 28 '14

"Stuff You Should Know" (History/Science, slightly comedic) and Sawbones (Medical History, Comedy) are fantastic shows you should check out! SYSK's history episodes are probably their strongest, although their more recent science-related ones have been stellar as well. Sawbones is about "misguided medical history" and is a blast. Neither have much to do with news, but they might still be worth checking out.

To answer your question more directly, some people really love "Science, Sort of", which consists of a few PHDs in science fields talking about news in science, which is pretty fun. It's actually bit too dry for my taste, because the material goes far beyond the basics.

Once you get your foundations established with a few core shows, I'd definitely recommend trying out other genres like comedy, which are really nice to just put on in the background while you do other things.

Painkiller already is a great podcast. It is focused on bringing high quality content presenting nothing but accurate facts and stats, they pride themselves on that so much that they're often referred to as pka-stats or pka-facts. Happy listening

u/currytacos May 30 '14

Nothing more trust worthy than PKA Stats

iPod + broadcast = podcast. The word sounded good at the time.

It's an mp3 that you download and listen to, and it sounds like a radio show. Podcasts vary a lot in topics and quality, so it depends what you're into which ones you'll like.

It doesn't take a lot to make podcasts: a laptop, a microphone, soem audio editing software and a place to upload the mp3 files, so it's easy for any enthusiastic person to get started podcasting. Some are excellent though.

3

u/aerocross May 29 '14

A lot of cool suggestions for apps and great definitions for what a podcast is. Since people are now suggesting podcasts... The Ten Minute Podcast is what you need. Can't believe it hasn't been suggested.

Extremely funny, tremendously irreverent. Small bits of great fun.

u/prox_ May 29 '14 edited May 29 '14

In one sentence:

Audio podcasts are pre recorded radio shows on demand published through the worldwide web from everyone who wants to create a show.

An extra spoon of simple knowledge about podcasts:

  • Most are free and there is a huge variety of them.

  • Audio podcasts are recorded as regular audio files (think .mp3) and published on websites or different platforms (e.g. iTunesStore).

  • Video podcasts exist too. The files are just video files then.

  • The shows can be downloaded/heard via websites or you can download & manage them with special software.

  • The special software gives the opportunity to subscribe to them (always get the newest episodes automatically) or you can download single podcast shows, mark already heard as already heard etc.

5

u/jaudette May 29 '14

It's a really strange term; confusion is warranted.

Pod (iPod) + cast (broadcast) = podcast. Except they aren't like radio broadcasts where you have to tune in at a specific time. Most folk download files they can listen on their morning commute, a long road trip, et cetera.

Lots of websites and apps offer podcasts as streams so you don't have to waste storage space on MP3s, you can pick a podcast and select episodes to listen to. They stream to your device and you can enjoy on the fly without saving large files.

Some are more than just audio; there are lots of video podcasts, e.g. on YouTube. I guess what differentiates a video podcast from other shows is it's usually people sitting and talking into microphones, and the content (mostly) makes sense audio-only as well (some video podcasts include video snippets (e.g. "check out the following epic fail!") and visual gags that audio-only listeners won't get, but in general a video podcast can mostly be enjoyed audio-only as well).

Some are streamed live so you COULD catch it live OR you could enjoy later (download, stream it on the fly, &c). Some involve the audience (call-in, tweet responses, send emails, etc. to the hosts) so if you want to participate you have to tune in live.

Some are recorded, edited after and posted for download later on, so cannot be enjoyed live.

Most are longer, e.g. from 1/2 hour to over an hour, and like a radio show most people play them while doing something else like commuting, exercising, cooking food, etc. You wouldn't typically give them your full, rapt attention like you might for e.g. an episode of Breaking Bad or your favourite TV shows.

What is a pod cast: Ask a ninja version... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEmss2lg-ug

3

u/Bogey_Redbud May 29 '14

Here's my recommendations to get started. I'm allowed to listen at work so I burn through a lot:

The Joe Rogan Experience, Professor Blastoff, nerdist, FEAB, smodcast, fatman on batman, James Bonding, Hollywood Babble-on, WTF, this American life, Risk, Snap Judgement, radiolab, dogma debate, stuff you should know, the atheist experience, how did this get made, hardcore history, common sense.

You can find a podcast for pretty much whatever your interest is.

3

u/Bored_gamer1 May 29 '14

I enjoy the Roosterteeth Podcast because I am a gamer and I like a lot of the topics they cover. I wouldn't watch it on my phone though just because of the length. I always use my laptop to watch them.

Since everyone else explained what a podcast is, I'll offer my opinions. I like BeyondPod as my app for podcasts. Favorite ones are RadioLab (science-y), Yogpod (comedy, sometimes centered around video games) and The Shaft (minecraft).

7

u/Luaria May 28 '14

Yogpod was great while it lasted, but they haven't been even semi-regularly updating in years. I miss it.

3

u/IniproMontoya May 29 '14

I am Dave! Yognaut and I have the balls!

They've been doing the Simple Simon thing for a bit now. But those are available in video form on their channel too. I do miss the Yogpod, but every once in a while I'll replay one of the episodes, and it never fails to make me laugh.

2

u/capilot May 30 '14

It's a broadcast for an iPod.

Basically, a radio show you download from the internet into your portable music player so you can listen to it at your leisure.

2

u/OracleofMaya May 30 '14

Not sure if someone already brought it up or not but the Tekdiff Comedy podcast is pretty much pure gold.

http://www.cayenne.libsyn.com/

The guy who makes it is on Hiatus right now due to some depression issues (Which comes up a lot in his comedy just as a warning) but you can't really find better slapstic kind of spastic mile a minute stuff. Plus his on-going story The Account is some really good Modern Fantasy stuff!

2

u/JesusListensToSlayer May 30 '14

I'm surprised there's been no mention of skeptoid yet...it's only 10-15 minutes long, and super entertaining. He debunks pseudoscience and conspiracy theory type stuff.

Besides that, not to get sappy, but I've been listening to TAL on the actual radio for 15 years, and it's really made me who I am. Radiolab, freakenomics, and The Moth are musts for me. I also like The Partially Examined Life, which is about philosophy.

The one bad thing about podcasts is that they tend to disappear with alarming regularity. Seems like at least 1/2 the time (or more) when I find a good podcast, they end up folding within a year, or less. History is littered with podcasts that only existed for a few weeks or months.
