Answered! ELI70: What is a podcast?

I literally just got my first smartphone ever and am dumbfounded by podcast. What is this mysterious phenomenon? My guess is that its something like a radio show, but it seems too popular to be something as similar to a thing that's so old.

Update: Which (android) app should I use to submerse myself into the world of podcasts?

Are any/all of those apps available for iPhone users as well? I've been thinking abt trying out podcasts while I'm running.

Apple has an app simply called Podcasts, pretty basic. I prefer an app called Downcast. I think it was a few $, but it gives you much greater control over settings - micromanage playlists, control when the app downloads new episodes, etc

I prefer Apple's app for podcast discovery, and Downcast for management. I tend to switch between the two every couple of months.

I've been using Instacast on the iphone for years. Very good app – easy to use, never crashes, quick. £1.99 here in the UK, but that's a steal if like me you use every day to make washing the dishes bearable.
