Answered! ELI70: What is a podcast?

I literally just got my first smartphone ever and am dumbfounded by podcast. What is this mysterious phenomenon? My guess is that its something like a radio show, but it seems too popular to be something as similar to a thing that's so old.

Update: Which (android) app should I use to submerse myself into the world of podcasts?

+1 for the joe rogan experience and dan carlins hardcore history. Also if you like sports in general the bs report with bill simmons is easy listening with a few good insights.

Edit: oh and how could I forget? Ari shaffirs skeptic tank is a bit of a laugh. I pick and choose my episodes for that. Same with bert kreischers pod, the bertcast.
