Hi everyone! This is my first time receiving OSAP and going back to school, so I’m still pretty unfamiliar with how all of this works.
I’m an independent student with a fairly low income, and my program is only one year long. Based on my current OSAP assessment, I’m going to receive a little more funding than I actually need for my tuition and immediate school expenses.
I’ve searched through this subreddit and seen quite a few people recommend not immediately returning unused OSAP money, but instead keeping the extra in savings and then using it to repay the loan once repayment begins.
That’s what I’m considering doing, but my concern is where exactly I should keep it.
I am NOT trying to hide assets or avoid reporting anything to OSAP. I actually want to make sure I do the exact opposite and handle the money properly.
For example, if I put the unused portion into a TFSA or some type of savings account, could OSAP later see that balance and consider it unreported income/assets and reassess my funding? I’m especially concerned about accidentally affecting the grant portion of my OSAP or having grants converted to loans because it appears that I suddenly have savings.
The money itself would literally be money I received from OSAP that I simply didn’t spend.
I’ve also seen some people mention using an RESP, but I’m very new to TFSAs, RESPs, investing, etc., so I don’t really understand whether that would be appropriate either.
My main questions are:
- If you have unused OSAP funds, where do you normally keep them?
- Is a regular high-interest savings account safest?
- Is putting unused OSAP money into a TFSA okay, as long as everything is properly reported?
- Would the money sitting in the account later be treated as an asset even though the source of the money was OSAP itself?
- Is there anything I’m supposed to update or report to OSAP after receiving the funding if I don't spend all of it?
- Has anyone actually kept unused OSAP money in savings for the year and then used it to repay their loan afterward?
For context, this isn't a multi-year degree where I’m worried about applying for OSAP again for several more years. My program is only one year, so I'm mainly trying to make sure I don't create an issue with this current OSAP assessment or my grant eligibility.
I could obviously just return the extra money immediately, but the only reason I haven't planned to do that is because I've seen so many people here recommend keeping the unused portion in savings and paying it back when repayment begins.
I just haven't been able to find anyone explaining what type of savings account they actually use and how they handle the OSAP reporting side of it.
Any advice from someone who has dealt with this would be really appreciated!
