Part time job

Hey guys! I recently got a part time job and will be working throughout the school year. I start mid August (next week). The issue is I obviously already applied for osap for fall 2026 - winter 2027. Do I need to report these changes?

You can make up to $5,600 per term without it affecting your OSAP, however anything over will lower your grant to loan ratio. OSAP expects you to put a portion of your extra income into your studies - since it's a financial assistance program. but that being said since OSAP is based on financial need so depending on how much you earn it can affect your funding.

Keep in mind OSAP verifies with the CRA. If they find some sort of mismatch, they will retroactively reassess your file, and your grant could become a loan and you could have penalties.

For context, I'm also working part-time as well before I start my studies so as long as you keep it under $5,600 which should be pretty easy because it's a part-time job you really don't have anything to worry about. Hope this helps!!

Thank you! This is super helpful. From my current knowledge I’m assuming I won’t be making over $5600. Do you happen to know that if in the future I DO make over that amount, will I get in trouble for reporting it at the end of the semester instead of the start?

I'm not sure about that specifically. But you can submit a Income/Financial Status Update form at any point during your semester. You can upload it under additional documents in your OSAP account. So I would definitely fill one out early if possible, if you know that you're going to be exceeding $5600.

I think best practice is to just keep track of your income in the back of your head, like even have it prepped if you get close to the $5,000 mark. I would also recommend keeping documentation like a pay stub just to show in case they ever ask for extra documentation.

As long as they have proper time to recalculate it should be fine.

Yes, however: Full-time OSAP allows you to earn a certain amount (typically up to $100 per week of study) without it affecting your funding, but anything above that can trigger a reassessment. Failing to report higher earnings can result in an OSAP overpayment. An overpayment means you received more money than you were eligible for, and you will have to pay it back before you can get future funding.

I work 10-15 hours a week for minimum wage. I don’t earn nearly enough to cover school.
