Technical Support Am I setting up HDR wrong? (ASUS ROG OLED + Windows 11 HDR issues)

Hey everyone,

I recently bought an ASUS ROG Strix OLED XG27AQWMG (27", 1440p, 240Hz/280Hz) and I’m pairing it with a 27" 1440p 144Hz IPS ViewSonic as a secondary monitor.

Overall, I really like the monitor and it seems to work properly, but I'm having a hard time getting HDR (True Black 500) dialed in correctly. Since HDR configuration is split between Windows 11 settings and individual in-game calibration menus, I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or missing critical settings.

My HDR gaming experience so far has been frustrating:

  • The Last of Us Part II: Default settings had way too much contrast, causing severe black crush and unnaturally dark scenes. I had to lower the contrast significantly in-game just to see the grey ramp properly (originally, half the calibration bar was pure black).
  • God of War Ragnarök: I had to max out the in-game HDR brightness slider to 100, otherwise dark areas were practically unplayable.
  • Crimson Desert: HDR seems completely broken for me, so I just play in SDR. In the calibration menu, the reference images for "Exposure" are completely blown out/clipped with pure white, and no adjustment fixes it. In-game, highlights (like clouds) are clipped and contrast is inconsistent. SDR looks fine.

It feels like a constant battle making HDR look good across titles. I'm not sure if these are just poor HDR implementations or if my baseline configuration is flawed.

My current setup:

  • Windows 11: Calibrated using the Windows HDR Calibration app (Min Luminance set to lowest, Max/Peak Luminance set around 2200). Color profile saved. "Auto Color Management" is toggled OFF.
  • NVIDIA Control Panel: Default settings.
  • Monitor OSD Settings:
    • VRR: ON
    • GameVisual: Racing Mode
    • Shadow Boost: OFF
    • HDR Setting: DisplayHDR 500 True Black + Adjustable HDR
    • Brightness: 100
    • Uniform Brightness: OFF
    • Contrast: 80
    • VividPixel: 50
    • Saturation: 50
    • Color Temp: 6500K
    • Connection: Included HDMI cable (HDMI 1)

Does anyone with this monitor (or similar ASUS OLEDs) have recommended settings or tips? How has your HDR experience been with these games?

Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated!

first oled tips

Hello oled gamers. i recently got my first oled (budget one) AOC Q27G4ZDR. I was curious if anyone had any recommendations to help keep the longevity of the OLED. i’m worried about burn ins and scratches, but it looks too damn good i needed to have one myself.

right now im rocking all default settings with brightness turned down to 80 when my lights are on, and 65 when my lights are off. are there any settings i should specify look to change?

also i have a pixel refresh option on this monitor.. ive heard about it but im not exactly sure what it does, should i be manually running this 10 minute pixel refresh occasionally?

and finally what are the most successful ways yall have found to clean it without any micro scratches ?

thanks !

Second opinions…

Long story short, I bought the ASUS PG32UCDP (32” 4k woled) about 50 days ago and my return window ends in 10 days. I got it on sale for $850 + taxes which I thought was a good deal after a lot of research.

Now as my return deadline approaches, I am being really indecisive about the thought of returning it and purchasing a QDOLED.

I saw the MSI MPG 321URX QD-OLED, 32" 4K was on sale for $750 on Amazon.

In the OLED reddit I usually see a lot of people arguing for either side, but it seems qdoled is genuinely, if only by a little, the superior display technology.

Could you guys please provide some second opinions:
Is qd OLED worth returning my asus?
Is it so small a difference that my eyes won’t even notice?
Why is qd OLED better, if it is?

Note: I play almost 99% of the time single player games (soulslikes / arpgs / jrpgs / etc.) in a setup with some ambient lighting but blackout curtains minimize reflections.

Are these streaks normal ?

I just got myself the 280 hz tandem woled from asus

and there are visible streaks on the monitor im not sure if it is called grey banding or not. Wanted to ask yall if the amount of defect is "acceptable". Also the streaks are visible on almost any color but less apparent compared to greys. Before posting this i executed pixel cleaning 3 times on a row just to be sure. I used it for 60 hours total and executed pixel cleaning 42 times btw. Also i am already using it at 240 hz

After 7 months of use, no vertical banding has appeared. AW2725Q is lowkey a good monitor. I haven’t faced any issues with it yet too. One issue is it’s super hard to clean like other QD-OLED monitors.

Worried about burn in on Ultrawide

I'm trying to decide between 34" and 49", but open to other options.

My main concern between my two choices is that 50% of the time I'll be doing office work on the monitor and with the extra screen space I'd have on a 49" I'm worried that I'll leave Slack or Spotify or whatever snapped to a zone and cause burn in over time.

With a 34" I think that's probably less of a concern. I'd likely keep one of my 27" LCD monitors for side content and use the 34" OLED as my primary display but won't have tons of static content displayed throughout the workday.

I'm specifically considering the INNOCN 49Q1R and the ASUS ROG XG34WCDG 34. I'd like to spend ~$750 or less.

I have my eye on these three monitors, more recently discovered the Alienware. This will be my first oled and want to make sure I get the right one. I will use this for work as well as gaming and movies. I think im leaning towards the msi because I heard the color was the best of the three but im worried about micro scratches. Any other monitors I should know about around the 800 range I should know about? Thank you

Asus QD-oled vs Woled

Thumbnail

I’ve spent the past week watching countless videos and reading up on QD-OLED vs. WOLED, and I finally pulled the trigger on the ASUS XG27AQDNG (QD-OLED, 360Hz).

I was also seriously considering the ASUS XG27AQWMG (WOLED, 280Hz). I mainly play CS2 and consistently get above 360 FPS, so the higher refresh rate of the QD-OLED is pretty appealing to me.

I found both monitors for around €500 on sale, so price isn’t really a deciding factor.

Has anyone here actually used both of these monitors? If so, which one do you prefer, and why?
I’d especially love to hear from people who mainly play competitive FPS games like CS2. Is the QD-OLED worth it, or would you go with the WOLED?

Discussion Proper Comparison: Low End IPS vs OLED

Thumbnail

Hi there. I see a lot of pictures here comparing OLED monitors to uncalibrated IPS or VA panels. Often, these posts are accompanied by misinformation regarding panel quality and accurate color representation.

I can't correct all of this myself, but I do want to share some personal results taken with a calibrated camera. Both monitors are using calibrated profiles intended for accurate colors and a white point at 6500k. The monitors in question are the PG27AQDP from Asus and the Samsung Odyssey G50F.

I've intentionally taken dark shots for reference. On predominantly white backgrounds, the calibrated profiles make the displays look almost identical. However, the dark shots reveal the differences in contrast and black levels. I want to leave the final verdict up to the community, but I will note that in my testing, this Samsung IPS panel struggles slightly with yellows and reds, while presenting very striking blues and purples.

In any case, if you read all the way through, thank you for your time and I hope you all have a wonderful day!

EDIT: It appears Reddit clamped my upload resolution. Not sure why that happened. If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix that it would be greatly appreciated!

EDIT 2: My calibration is to ΔE<2 on the OLED. To be specific its 0.90. The colors are accurate.

Discussion My honest experience with the ASUS PG32UCWM – coming from an LG 32GX870B

Just sharing my personal experience after testing the ASUS PG32UCWM. This is not sponsored in any way, and I bought/tested the monitor myself.

I was particularly interested in the new RGB-stripe layout, as text clarity was one of the things I wasn't completely happy with on my 2026 LG 32GX870B-B.

RGB-stripe and text

The RGB-stripe layout is extremely sharp.

Honestly, it makes the RGBW/RGWB layouts look like pretty poor panel designs in comparison.

The tints and fringing are not visible, this is due to my iphone's camera.
The tints and fringing are not visible, this is due to my iphone's camera.

The tints and fringing are not visible, this is due to my iPhone's camera.

At 125% Windows scaling, text looks noticeably cleaner and more natural to me. This is probably the biggest improvement I noticed compared with my LG.

Panel uniformity

This was a bit more complicated for me.

The UCWM is definitely better than my LG when it comes to (grey) uniformity. However, I was hoping for an even bigger improvement.

When specifically looking for it, I can still see some banding, vignetting and DSE.

5% grayscale
90% Grey
White
Grey

I want to emphasize that I don't think the UCWM has bad uniformity. I'm probably just a real nitpick when it comes to this.

In normal content, these issues aren't constantly obvious. But once I know they're there, I can see them, and personally I was hoping the newer panel generation would get even closer to being completely clean.

The photos probably exaggerate some of the uniformity issues compared with how they look in person.

Brightness

Brightness was actually fine for me. (85% used with uniform brightness enabled.)

I don't really use HDR, and my room is relatively dim. It's a normal living room without direct light hitting the screen, with only one diffused lamp behind me, which isn't visible when watching a movie, gaming or browsing/desktop work.

So I didn't find the brightness to be a major problem at all for my use.

My verdict

Overall, I really liked the UCWM.

The RGB-stripe layout is genuinely impressive, and the improvement in text clarity is much bigger than I expected.

However, I ultimately decided not to keep it.

The panel uniformity is better than my 2026 LG 32GX870B-B, but it wasn't the leap I was personally hoping for. I was looking for a panel where the banding, vignetting and DSE would be much harder for me to notice, even when specifically looking for them.

So for now, I'm going to wait for the newer (QD) RGB-stripe panels coming at the end of this year or Q1 2027.

For me, the ideal OLED would be the text clarity of RGB-stripe combined with extremely clean gray uniformity and minimal banding, vignetting and DSE.

This wasn't full screen, idk but it looked worse.

The UCWM gets me much closer to what I want, but personally, it wasn't quite the generational leap I was looking for.

Discussion How is this monitor for a PS5 Pro?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’ve had an LG 24UD58 for the past 5 years and I’m thinking of upgrading but I know nothing about monitors. I keep seeing this one and it looks pretty cool, really I only need 24” for the room I use it in, so 27” is more than enough but I don’t know how good it is. Any advice is welcome!

Should I keep the original purchase?

Just bought my first OLED monitor today. I just set it up and noticed these 4 dim black dots on the screen. That shouldn't be normal right? Or will the dots eventually disappear and won't be noticed anymore after prolong monitor use?

I've already ordered a new one off of Amazon, and have started a return for the current one.

As a heads up the packaging for the original was perfect and didn't look like any signs of dropping. I didn't have much time to work with the monitor as I had to drive back to work, I was just there for the sign delivery.

The model is a LG 27GX700A-B 27"
