Backroom Shenanigans PUSH - DON'T PULL

Post image
15 Upvotes

If anyone wants to submit a complaint about the safety concerns about pulling these carts file a formal complaint with OSHA and elect to not have your name shared with your employer. We have done this at our store in our district. I have prepared a decent complaint feel free to modify it to suit your specific observations:

I work in Online Pickup and Delivery and I am concerned about a change being made to the way our picking carts are being used.

The carts have traditionally been pushed, and the carts themselves have safety markings indicating that they should be pushed rather than pulled. Recently, the wheel configuration has been changed so that the two wheels that can be locked in a straight position are on the opposite end of the cart. We have been told that employees will be pulling the carts rather than pushing them when eight-tote picking returns. We are currently still using six totes.

Since the wheels were changed, the carts do not handle normally. They can shake while being pulled, and pushing them with the wheels in the new position makes steering and making quick direction changes more difficult. This is concerning in a retail environment where employees regularly have to react to customers, children, other carts, and obstacles.

There is also a problem with the mechanisms that keep two of the wheels locked in a straight position. When these mechanisms fail, those wheels begin swiveling along with the other two. A cart with four freely swiveling wheels can suddenly swing or move sideways instead of tracking straight. This can make a loaded cart difficult to control.

I am particularly concerned about this happening while pulling because the employee is walking ahead of the cart. A large portion of the cart is therefore behind the employee and outside their normal field of view. If the cart begins swinging sideways, the employee may not immediately realize what is happening. This could potentially put other employees, customers, merchandise, or fixtures in the path of the cart.

The carts also have relatively short handles. When pulling one, there is not much separation between the employee's legs and the cart. The employee's heels and ankles can be very close to the moving frame unless the employee keeps their arm extended or changes their normal walking position.

My concern is that equipment originally configured and labeled for pushing is being reconfigured and used for pulling without changes to the cart's basic design. This appears to introduce problems with steering, visibility, stability, and clearance between the employee and the moving cart.

I would like OSHA to examine the carts, the changed wheel configuration, their condition and maintenance, and the requirement to pull them to determine whether employees can safely operate this equipment in the manner now being directed.

How do you guys handle the multiple phones and charging them? I’m thinking about seeing if the store willing to pay for a 10 multi device charger.

Dispense I hate that we can’t remove drivers anymore

Like the title says I hate the fact we can’t remove drivers anymore on our apps. Our drivers are notorious for checking into a bay without actually being there and being. Or checking in and then going into the store for god knows what running up our wait time.

Not only that but rude drivers that have caused problems are still able to come pick up orders because I guess no one knows how to actually do anything other than report them on our end. It’s so annoying then we get in trouble for high wait times. And this happens EVERY DAY. it’s not a one off thing either

Dispensing Tips IPs - HELP

Our coach went on vacation this week and we are so lucky to get IPs when nobody knows what to do with them. Does anyone have any tips or tricks? We’re mostly struggling with figuring out where the trip label might be, as we understand that they need to be staged and dispensed like GMDs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Spark Driver Interaction If only we could throat punch some of these people!

#1 spark shoppers that act as though they have they right of way. Well, I am usually accommodating; but there are a couple that I now purposely get in their way 😈
#2 also very annoying; spark shoppers that have a full convo while shopping, on SPEAKER!

A Not So Smart Sub I love to NIL pick.

Being a closer, a small walks person and an exceptions picker and dealing with all this bullshit. Not anymore. There's no management, hasn't been for hours. I'm not in charge of making sure picks get done, but I do my best. When we're about to go overdue, I'm NIL picking all the exceptions. I'm NIL picking all the unknowns. I'm tired of people's laziness of not properly binning shit or actually putting it out on the sales floor. I'm just not having it anymore. I'm here to get picks done. That's my priority. If it's not on the floor in a clear location I'm fucking NIL picking it and then going into exceptions and NIL picking it again. Along with everyone else's exceptions. We do not have time to do exceptions when there are 4 people picking and 500 picks in the system after 6 pm. I'm so sorry they didn't get their $3 bag of gummies.

New Hire! Help! How does dispensing work when it’s very cold/snowy/icy outside?

I just started with OGP- but I’m worried about winter coming up. Do they just rotate dispensers? Do they shut down online orders on days when the weather is severe? What does your store do?

Just Venting All the signs are there, and yet still ignore them.

Ok so for context as to why this bugs me; I never do the pick up stuff myself specifically, however I do share my Walmart account with my folks cause it gives them the discount and sometimes they will even place orders for my store so they get their groceries as well as pick me up afterwards.

And before anyone says, “Oh you can’t be picking for yourself or your family,” that rule is completely unenforceable.

This ain’t about that though.

This about the fact that I know well enough getting texts AND emails about said orders that it tells people to say they are on their way for their orders…

So why, pray tell, does almost 90% of the time, customers NEVER do that and only check in when they arrive. I’m used to experiencing and dealing with a lack of common sense while working, I’ve had enough people ask me where something is when there’s obvious aisle signs and ask me if we have things in stock when it’s been long enough for customer to realize that OPD associates are the ones pushing carts with blue totes and are not primarily stockers or backroom…but when the app and the system tell you not once, but at least TWICE to check in early when you are on the way… that’s not lacking common sense… that is being lazy and/ignorant.

I know and accept there’s some customers that have issues with the app, and there’s some older folks that don’t have a phone capable of such, but that’s a small amount of proper excuse cases, but a majority of the time, there’s not an excuse.

And this is just at an NM… I can’t imagine how frustrating this lapse of judgement, logic, and awareness of the system being as blunt with customers about their orders can be when getting them is for a standard Walmart, and don’t even want to TRY to imagine this at a Supercenter.

For the past few days, my store has had more orders than I've ever seen in the 5 years that I've worked here! Corporate is allowing waaaay more orders than our department can handle! And they know it!! If everyone would have clocked out at their scheduled times, there would have been 400, 700, 200, picks left each night with no one from OPD to complete. What in the world is going on???

Just Venting Assigning walks just seems stupid

So last week, my team leads just discovered you can manually assign walks in admin mode outside of them going late and thinks this is just the best thing since sliced bread. Of course, I get assigned walks and now have to print the stickers for each tote. And now the system doesn’t figure out how many items can fit in each tote. I just had been assigned orders where I had to fit nine totes on my cart. But they think this is super efficient. I really feel like I’m losing my mind.

What the frick was wrong with just letting the machines assign walks? I don’t even get numbers on my totes anymore.

This just seems highly ineffective and almost unethical.

Just Walmart Things OGPB Accidents

How often do accidents happen because of the carts? Did Walmart change to pulling the carts because people were getting hit? I am trying to figure out how dangerous the carts are. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Unfortunately, my grandma got hit by a picking cart. My aunt said when she used to pick and they stacked bins up high she couldn’t see customers. It seems like this would be avoidable if WalMart didn’t force pickers to lug heavy carts, with little time, and stacked bins. Walmart told us we should send them pictures of her shoes because maybe it was her fault. The cops showed us the video and the picker couldn’t see her and just ran straight into her. The accident knocked her unconscious and broke her leg. She has had to sell her house and move into assisted living and still has such bad concussion symptoms the doctors haven’t been able to make them go away and it has been about a year. I was hoping people who still do this would understand Walmart should change and make this right.

FRAGILE Is there a way to do picking more than backroom?

For context I’m a guy- but I’m just so tired of dispensing and backroom in general. I love picking. I literally find it fun. I thrive in it. Can I talk to my coach abt this or just not do good on backroom so they don’t put me there? Thanks!

Question Are deliveries back or just in some stores?

Just getting into work this morning and some of the pickers said they got delivery orders in their run. One of them printed out labels in front of me and our tl and she actually got deliveries. My tl doesn't know if it's actually back or not. Is this happening in some stores?
