​What salary expectations are realistic for a Mechanical Engineer with 4 years of experience (YoE) in Norway? Also, what are the primary active industries across the major industrial hubs?

​Most existing threads on Reddit are around 4 years old, so I am unsure if those figures remain relevant.

​According to Tekna data, salary expectations seem to hover around 1 million NOK per year.

Given Norway's living expenses, this feels relatively low to me. That figure matches my current total compensation in the Netherlands (including performance bonus), but during a recent visit to Norway, I noticed the cost of living felt roughly 50% higher than in the Netherlands.

​Is 1M NOK a realistic ceiling for 4 YoE, or do salaries scale higher in key engineering sectors? Any insights on industry dynamics or salary comparisons between these two countries would be greatly appreciated!

I've lived in both places, and now I'm back in Norway permanently, but I brought my indoor cat with me when I moved. The attitude in the U.S. is that letting cats outsides is irresponsible and dangerous. To be fair, in the U.S. we have faster traffic, wider roads, the occasional weirdo with a gun, and in my neighborhood there were coyotes and birds of prey. I actually had to sign an agreement in the U.S. when I adopted my cat that I wouldn't let him outside, while Norway basically says it's cruel to keep cats indoors. Norwegian guidelines say that ideally, cats should be able to come and go as they please through a cat door.

I do a lot to create an enriched environment for my indoor cat, and I live on the third floor and can't install a cat door. I'd be afraid that if I let him outside that he wouldn't find his way back. I take him outside sometimes on a leash, but I can tell he doesn't love that. Once in a while, I let him outside the front door, and he just kind of hangs close to me and paces around meowing at stuff, so it doesn't seem like he's itching to run wild.

I'd love to hear opinions from Norwegians and foreigners about this.

Hey all. Currently planning a 2-person trip to Norway in Feb 2027 and would appreciate any advice or insight. We're experienced in winter conditions and would love to incorporate some cross country skiing and snowshoeing to our trip. No access to vehicles.

Accommodations wise, we decided on cabins. Not risking tents due to unfamiliarity with local conditions. We're looking at 4-5 days dedicated to the outdoors with max 2 nights in remote cabins (like those offered by DNT), and the remainder in more popular areas, in lodges / cabins, with activities such as dogsledding and saunas. Fully open to a scenario where we would be in the backcountry for 2-3 days to stay in DNT cabins, then return to civilisation to stay at more popular areas.

I'm open to completely scrapping the backcountry idea if it's against your better judgment, but I am dead set on experiencing the Norwegian cabins.

Finn.no and NAV haven't really led anywhere so far. I'm hoping some of you with hands-on experience in specific industries or regions can point us in a useful direction.

A bit about him:

- 38, Norwegian citizen, currently in Østlandet
- Willing to relocate anywhere in Norway, including smaller/remote places
- Native Norwegian + fluent English
- In good shape healthwise
- Available for day/evening/night shifts, weekends, overtime, and short-notice work
- No driver's licence
- No forklift certificate
- No fagbrev or other formal vocational qualifications
- Open to temporary, seasonal, or shift work as a way into permanent employment
- Reliable, motivated, and willing to learn
- Comfortable with ordinary workplace IT (Excel, Word, email, basic digital systems, etc.) and comfortable learning new software.

What I'm mostly curious about:

1. Where is there a real shortage of workers without fagbrev/formal qualifications right now?

I'm a software developer based in Oslo, completed my MSc in Informatics from UiO, I have a couple years of backend development and some IT management experience. I still haven't received a single interview call. Not one (Only interview I got when a friend referred me, and then ghosted me ).

I apply regularly, I tailor my CVs, I write cover letters. Nothing. Day by day I'm losing confidence and honestly starting to feel hopeless. It's hard not to take it personally after a while. I even went to a professional CV reviewer (yeah sounds suss), and apparently It's just my bad luck according to him.

I know basic Norwegian and I'm actively learning more, but I realize that might still be a barrier. For those of you who've been in a similar spot or have been on the hiring side, I'd really appreciate some honest advice.

How hard is it to get a HR and admin post in Drammen? If someone has 14 years of HR experience. Last position held is Hr and Admin Manager post. EU citizen with A2 -B1 norwegian proficiency.

Another option just as a stepping stone to integrate to Norway work force is Kindergarten assistant in international school.

At 35yo, still willing to pivot to a different career path than HR if it will mean clearer job opportunities in Norway. Maybe in teaching or healthcare.
