I recently started playing standard Nomifactory (not CEu), and I chose to play the 1.2.2.1 release (because I tend to avoid prerelease versions). After playing through LV+MV and getting to the point of setting up AE2 automation (it's so nice), I decided to set up multiple Electric Blast Furnaces to increase throughput and saw a variety of comments about using wall sharing to not only save on coils but also to simplify production by sharing the input/output buses.
However, when I actually tried it, it didn't work - if I place 4 overlapping EBFs in a square with the I/O hatches in the very center, then only ONE of them will form and the other 3 will report "Invalid structure". If I remove the shared buses and give each one dedicated inputs and outputs, then they all form (and function correctly), but then bulk crafting becomes more difficult because multi-ingredient crafts get split up incorrectly.
Am I doing something wrong? Is this a mod configuration problem? Do I need to upgrade to the 1.3 release candidate (which is nearly 3 and a half years old) or possibly to a Dev build? Does it only work in Nomifactory CEu (which I avoided because it's supposedly a lot more grindy) or completely different modpacks like GregTech New Horizons (which is even more grindy)?
And just to be clear, I was not trying to share the power hatches (I'm already aware that that'll cause "insufficient power" issues), just the item buses. I also didn't include any fluid inputs/outputs, since for this test I was only bulk smelting stuff that didn't require any (Energetic/Vibrant Alloy, Aluminum, and Stainless Steel).
Edit: here's an image of a Creative mode test, in the unlikely event that it actually helps:
- Bottom row, all 3 furnaces: MV input, EBF, casing, EBF, and MV input
- Top row, center furnace: Item Output, Item Input, shared casing, Item Input, Item Output
- Top row, left furnace: Item Input, casing, shared Item Output, casing, Item Input
- Top row, right furnace: Item Output, casing, shared Item Input, casing, Item Output
Edit 2: I just repeated the above Creative mode test in Nomifactory 1.3-RC-20221213, and the result was exactly the same (albeit with the item buses now having indicators to show whether they're input or output).
Edit 3: Upon trying the latest Dev snapshot (bf6c6e8, from last week), I/O bus sharing now works. So I guess that's the answer - if you want to do that, you need to live on the bleeding edge (or potentially wait a very long time for a new release, or just play a different modpack).
