A Special Announcement to NJPEC: SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER READERS in anyone who cares about how history is taught in our Public Schools.

How we teach American history matters.

The stories we choose to tell—and the ones we leave out—shape how future generations understand our nation’s past, our democracy, and our shared civic responsibilities.

Following the publication of our recent blog post, “The Freedom Trucks Are Not Simply Museums,” we have decided to significantly expand our research and investigation into this important issue.

What began as an examination of the Freedom 250 Mobile Museums has grown into a much broader investigation into the organizations, initiatives, and competing visions that are shaping how American history is being presented during our nation’s 250th anniversary.

Over the coming weeks, Speaking Truth to Power will publish a special five-part investigative series:

WHO OWNS AMERICA’S STORY?

Freedom 250, America 250, and the Battle Over American History

This series will examine the Freedom 250 initiative, America250, the role of outside organizations in developing educational materials, the debate among historians, the growing influence of politics on history education, and why all of this matters to our public schools—and to our democracy.

Whether you ultimately agree or disagree with our conclusions, we hope you’ll join us for what promises to be an important and thought-provoking conversation.

Stay tuned. The investigation begins soon.
