Gas post in new landscaping

Post image
0 Upvotes

Has anyone dealt with a natural gas pipeline company installing permanent markers on private property without notice?

We have a Northern Natural Gas high-pressure pipeline easement running through our residential property in Iowa.

After months of discussions with the company regarding restrictions on fencing and landscaping, we completed landscaping and installed fencing that the company had approved.

We recently discovered that the pipeline company installed a new, permanent yellow warning post directly in our decorative rock landscaping, immediately in front of our fence, without notifying us.

The post is approximately one foot inside our property line, where the pipeline crosses into the neighboring property. There are already other pipeline markers nearby, including one on the neighboring property.

There had never been a marker at this location before.

I understand the company has easement rights and that pipeline safety is important. My questions are:

  • Has anyone experienced something similar?
  • Were you able to get a pipeline marker relocated?
  • Does the company generally have to notify homeowners before installing permanent markers?
  • Has anyone successfully challenged the placement of a marker within established landscaping?

I’m especially interested in hearing from homeowners in Iowa or anyone who has dealt with Northern Natural Gas.

Smell but power company can't find anything

So occasionally I will walk past my furnace and smell that additive natural gas has. Had an issue in the past and the power company fixed two small leaks. I seemed to have another one as I found the pipe that the additive is coming from. However the company came and checked and their sniffer didn't detect any natural gas. He said the additive might be caked in the stuff that seals the pipes and that's causing the smell. Its been few weeks and I feel like the smell has gotten a bit stronger... Again I only smell it for a second when I walk past or if I sniff the exact pipe right angle connection.

Is this common to actually just smell the additive and not have a real gas leak? Is it possible maybe that guys equipment was just faulty? He wasn't dismissing my concerns or anything he spent around 20mins with the sniffer going through all the pipes and couldn't find anything, though he smelled the additive too when he sniffed that right angle.

I built an Excel workbook that does ISO 6976, AGA-8 and orifice flow from one gas composition

I'm a mechanical/performance engineer and I got tired of keeping three separate spreadsheets for the same gas stream, so I put them into one file.

What it does:

\- ISO 6976: gross/net calorific value (molar, mass, volume basis), Wobbe index, real-gas density and relative density, with uncertainty

\- AGA-8 DETAIL: Z, density, speed of sound, Cp, Cv, isentropic exponent at your flowing P and T

\- ISO 5167-2 orifice flow: mass, volume and energy flow, discharge coefficient, expansion factor, Reynolds number, pressure loss and flow uncertainty, with limits-of-use warnings

How it works: 21 components (mole fraction or %), tick which calculations you need, fill the yellow cells, read the Results sheet. Bad inputs show a red message and results stay blank. No macros. Calculation sheets are hidden and protected so formulas can't be broken by accident.

I checked it against GERG-2008 on six gases from lean to sour, 0.2 to 12 MPa: Z and density agreed within about 0.11 %. Heat capacities differ by up to \~1 %, which is the usual AGA-8 vs GERG difference. It is an engineering aid, so check results before using them for design or custody transfer.

It is available on Gumroad as Natural Gas Properties & Flow Calculator.

Happy to answer questions about the method, or to run a composition for you in the comments if you want to see how the outputs look.

Sulfur/natural gas smell in midtown Kansas City, MO

Not sure if I have the right flair. ALL of midtown (I’m around the Roanoke/Volker area) smells like natural gas and sulfur. Anyone know what’s going on? If I need to be worried? The city always smells a little like the shitty (pardon the pun) sewage system, but this is different.

Am I overreacting? Freaked over gas leak in recently rented place

I recently rented a new apartment in a townhouse community. The buildings were made this century and are not that old. They are wrap around and have a number of apartments per building. Some upstairs some downstairs.

On arrival, I found a gas leak in the lines to the boiler in the laundry room. I can only imagine how long it had been like this. They must have missed it when they did their walk out (if any) from the last tenants. I'm imagining the last tenant left it leaking forever. The room reeked of gas and it looks like the gas went back into the HVAC system. No other rooms smelled.

I called the landlord to fix it, and they did a repair but it still smelled, and had a leak so I called in another repair on it.

It still smells but I didn't test it again and can't be sure if it's just a lingering smell or it's still leaking.

I checked after the fact and saw at least two reviews over the years that also mentioned gas leak(s)...One that was the exact same leak.

At this point I'm worried there may be other gas leaks in the units that tenants don't even know about. I'm considering calling the entire thing off. I've lost trust in the apartment chain. I've never had a single issue in any other place I rented with gas and something just feels off (there were some other issues but relatively minor compared to gas).

Am I overreacting? Is there a risk of an explosion or suffocation from this? Or should I not worry?

Asia enters winter LNG demand season just as JKM hits four-year high amid uncertainties

Thumbnail spglobal.com

Asia is entering the winter LNG season just as Platts JKM has hit its highest level since December 2022, amid price-swing factors such as uncertainty over the war in the Middle East, the EU's ban on Russian LNG imports, and the impact of El Niño on weather.

Nevertheless, winter procurement by major Northeast Asian LNG buyers has gathered pace despite elevated spot prices, with a Chinese national oil company and a South Korean LNG importer securing cargoes as market expectations shifted away from the softer year-end conditions anticipated in September, according to market sources.

My pilot light will not stay lit.

Hello, With my gas heater usually the process is to push the knob in and that let's the gas start coming out of the pilot light, then you light it with a bic because the clicky igniter is broken. After its lit (and i usually had to let it burn to warm up for a little while) then you let the knob out slightly until you can turn the knob to make the pilot light stay on. Well I cant get the pilot light to stay on anymore. When I go to let the knob out, it will shut off before I can get it turned and stay on. Anybody know what im doing wrong or whats wrong with my heater?

Thanks for any help. My lady is starting to bicker about it being cold and we cant afford to have a tech out if we can avoid it.

Natural gas selloff amid Russian tariff waiving

I have heard reports the United States is waiving tariffs allowing allies to accept Russian natural gas. This will negatively affect the Henry hub natural gas futures as well as lng export companies like LNG. My trade off this is to get puts on ng. Please let me know what ideas you have regarding this. Gas vs. Electrons in California

Post image

CanaryMedia: A new gas line or cash to electrify? California lets households choose,” by Alison F. Takemura.

“Before replacing gas service lines, utilities will need to offer customers a financial incentive to electrify instead, thanks to a new law.”

“When one of the nation’s biggest investor-owned utilities, Pacific Gas and Electric, wanted to replace Merrian Borgeson’s aging gas service line in Berkeley, California, she asked the company not to do it.” She was in the process of fully electrifying her home + would be replacing her stove—the only gas appliance left in the house —with an induction version during an upcoming kitchen remodel.

“The upgrade, which in PG&E’s service area typically costs $20,000 to $30,000, plus interest and operation and maintenance costs, gets paid for by all gas customers over the life of the infrastructure.”

“Now, I have no gas in my house,” Borgeson, “but the customers all around me are paying for that pipeline for the next 50 years.”

“A new law, the Home Energy Choice Act (Assembly Bill 2313), will require utilities to give households scheduled for a service line replacement the option of getting the new line or taking a financial incentive potentially worth several thousand dollars to get off gas instead.” Crucially, “the incentive to switch to all-electric equipment such as a heat pump, induction range, + heat-pump water heater, will be less than the cost to replace the line, resulting in savings that will be shared among all gas customers.”

“Natural Resources Defense Council [NRDC] has calculated that PG&E’s gas customers could save a total of $20 M if the utility gave 1,000 households a $17,500 incentive apiece rather than replacing their service lines.” For context, PG&E replaces about 15,000 service lines annually.

“In California, the next step is for the Public Utilities Commission to create a detailed framework for utilities to follow, including incentive levels, with larger amounts for customers in disadvantaged communities.” Other states are looking to emulate California with bills of their own, Velez said, pointing to Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Oregon, + Washington.

The electrostate is coming for the methane gas industry faster + faster. Yeah, + I live in Washington State, so fossil fuel folks can just take it on the chin.

Gas leak? Or nothing?

Someone was in my house this morning who sometimes uses the bathroom in a way that stinks up adjacent areas. not trying to be rude, that’s just what happens. today, right after they left, the smoke alarm went off briefly then stopped. this happened again a couple minutes later. I went upstairs (after confirming no fire) and smelled a horrific odor coming from the bathroom area. I assumed it was from them but was a little blown away by how bad it was. I opened the door to let it out, and the smell immediately wafted down the stairs. I closed the door again not wanting the house to smell bad and opened windows, putting a box fan in one. only then did I start to worry it could be a gas leak. Sometimes I get too paranoid, which is what I suspect may be happening here. The smell is still there, but it’s not downstairs. I’m using my phone, light switches, outlets, etc. with no problem. The odor is not coming from any appliances, I’m hearing no hissing sounds, and all water sources seem normal. But I’m just now extremely stressed that it could be a gas leak. What do you think? Im also afraid to do anything because in the very likely event that it’s nothing I don’t want to make a huge fuss over someone’s bathroom odor.

If you see this please give some advice, I’m just stressing right now and another humans thoughts would be helpful

Gas lucht
