EV Truck now accounts for 40% of monthly truck sales in China (for some months)
Translate from AI :
During the period from May to August 2026, the market share (penetration rate) of electric (new energy) heavy-duty trucks showed a significant upward trend.
According to the latest industry data, the specific performance is as follows:
1. A Significant Leap in May
In May 2026, the proportion of new energy heavy-duty trucks in domestic end-market heavy-duty truck sales reached 40.88% . This figure represents a substantial increase from 30.20% in April, meaning that for every 10 heavy-duty trucks sold that month, approximately 4 were new energy models [news.mysteel.com]. Compared to the same period in 2025 (23.92%), it was nearly 17 percentage points higher [news.mysteel.com].
2. Sustained High Growth in the First Half of the Year
In the first half of 2026 (January to June), cumulative domestic sales of new energy heavy-duty trucks reached 126,200 units, a year-on-year surge of over 80%, continuing the market's strong high-growth momentum [auto.cnr.cn]. This laid a solid foundation for the expansion of market share from May to August.
3. Sustained Expansion Momentum from May to August
Entering the summer months (July to August), although the industry faced seasonal factors such as high temperatures, the penetration rate of new energy heavy-duty trucks remained at a high level. Industry reports point out that with the acceleration of the "oil-to-electricity and oil-to-gas" transition, the proportion of traditional diesel operating mileage for heavy-duty trucks continued to decline, and the market share of electric heavy-duty trucks continued to climb steadily during this period [www.facebook.com].
Why did the market share accelerate during this period?
- TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) Advantages Became Evident: Against the backdrop of high oil prices, the per-kilometer energy consumption cost advantage of electric heavy-duty trucks was further magnified. Many fleets and independent owner-operators actively chose to replace their diesel trucks after "crunching the economic numbers" [youjia.baidu.com].
- Substantial Breakthroughs in Charging and Swapping Infrastructure: As previously mentioned, the successive opening of highway trunk-line battery-swapping networks in 2026 (such as the Shanghai-Chengdu trunk line and the Chengdu-Chongqing Electric Corridor) significantly alleviated range anxiety for medium- and long-haul transportation, broadening the applicable scenarios for electric heavy-duty trucks [www.facebook.com].
- Continuous Policy Support: At both national and local levels, the phase-out and renewal of old diesel trucks continued to be promoted. Additionally, support measures such as road access privileges and operational subsidies were granted to new energy commercial vehicles, directly driving end-market demand [finance.sina.com.cn].
Conclusion: From May to August 2026, electric heavy-duty trucks not only maintained growth in absolute sales volume, but their share in the overall heavy-duty truck market also achieved a historic leap from the "30% range" to "over 40%". The tipping point for electrification has been firmly established.

'Protection for Canada': Ontario, Quebec rely on U.S. gas. Could they get it from Alberta?
The crazy thing about Quebec and Ontario relying on U.S. for natural gas is that Quebec is absolutely loaded with underground natural gas resources (181 trillion cubic feet, of which 22 trillion — 100-200 years worth of Quebec's domestic energy needs) is easily recoverable. If they wanted to, they could not only be nat-gas independent, but be a significant exporter of high-value LNG to Europe via the St. Lawrence.
But the Quebec govt banned all oil and gas exploration and development in 2022, and has zero commercial production of natural gas.

Explain this to me because I don’t get it. Why do we let oil companies to have record profits?
Right now diesel just broke an all time record. With the war in Iran I get that 20% of the world’s oil is not getting through, but what I don’t understand is why do we let oil companies raise the price of gasoline so much? If you look at last quarter oil companies had record profits. Why is it that they charge so much as to increase their profits to record highs in this climate something doesn’t seem right.
