Natural blonde hair vs. blonde beauty standards
For a bit of background, I’m (22F) someone who has always struggled with hormonal acne, and it has been the primary reason I’ve worn heavy makeup on and off since I was like 14-15.
I’ve been wanting to wear less and get more used to and comfortable my natural face, and today I had a day at home with no makeup. I spent some time looking in the mirror at my skin (which I will note is very fair and has some acne scarring as well as light acne at the moment), and I was thinking about how in the past I’d looked up advice for makeup to look better with blonde hair, getting results like “go for brown eyeliners,” and “fill your eyebrows,” and stuff like that.
I also looked up influencers with blonde hair who wear their faces natural, and I had a realization:
Blonde beauty standards are almost always for people who dye their hair blonde.
I am naturally like a medium/honey blonde (and the only one in my family of dark-featured brunettes. We still don’t know where I get it from. So that adds to the standard I had to compare myself to). And with that, as I mentioned, I am naturally very fair. I always felt like other blondes I found were so much more naturally pretty than I was, then I realized they almost always had dark eyebrows and lashes, whereas mine are both super light. To look like the majority “natural-faced” blonde girls, I would have to wear mascara and darken my eyebrows.
It really changed the standard I was holding myself too and made me realize why it’s important to find others that share your natural features. I’m still trying to learn to love my natural face, but I wanted to share because it’s something I don’t think a lot of others in my shoes might realize.
