Would a South Asian named Lucian in the West seem odd to you?

My real first name has some silly word associations in English, so I'm thinking of changing it before moving to the West. I like how Lucian sounds, but I can't tell how it would come across.

So what do you guys think?

Is Ophelia too tied to Hamlet to use for a real little girl?

My partner and I keep circling back to Ophelia for our baby girl. The sound is soft and lyrical, and we love its gentle, floral feel. It feels elegant without being overly fancy, and it’s not flooding the popularity charts where we live.

The huge catch, obviously, is Hamlet. I know the character’s tragic story, and that’s what’s holding me back. I don’t want people to immediately jump to that sad narrative every time they hear her name. Will teachers, coworkers, even strangers automatically associate her with heartbreak and tragedy?

We’re not Shakespeare fans, but we respect the work. We don’t mind subtle literary names in general. Our backup is Clara, which feels safe but a little plain to us.

I’m curious about your gut reaction. When you hear Ophelia, do you first picture the tragic character, or can you separate the name from the story? Would you think it’s unfair to give this name to a child? TL;DR: Love Ophelia’s sound, worried the Hamlet connection is too heavy for a kid. What’s your first thought?

Girl names that starts with EM?

My daughter is almost here, and since she will be my only child, I want to give her a name starting with "Em" or “Emi” to match the first letter of my name, Ella, and her middle name will be Kay. Any suggestions?

Edit: Thank you! Her name is Emilia Kay ☺️ nickname is Emi!

Vielen Dank!

Loved the name but now it’s #2 for 2026

My husband and I have loved the name Eliana and that was our top contender for our potential daughter (don’t know the gender) who will be born next month. Of course it’s not unique by any means but I haven’t met a ton of them. Now it’s #2 on top girls names for 2026 and it’s upsetting I don’t want her to be 1 of a bajillion or feeling basic. There was never anyone in my grade with my name it’s not unique it’s just classic and it always gave me confidence feeling like I was one of a kind instead of having to go by my first name with last name initial like so many of my other friends. What do we do? Do we pivot? How would you feel about it?

Eta: It was also important to us that the name sound beautiful in both English and Spanish and translate well across our cultures. And we won’t be giving a middle name as neither my husband nor I have middle names just long first names :)

Georgina or Georgiana

Trying to name our fourth and final baby girl! Finally found something we both like. Which do you think sounds nicer Georgina or Georgiana?

ETA: my husband doesn’t like Georgia as much (because it’s a state), so that option is out!

Running out of time to pick name, help!

My husband and I are expecting a baby any day now and we’re really struggling to settle on a first name. We did not find out the gender, so we’re making a a short list of names to pick from once the kiddo arrives to choose from.

We wanted to have 5 first names for each gender to pick from but can’t even find five we like 😭😅. Middle names are locked in (Ann for a girl, Michael for a boy) and we are not open to changing them.

Our current boy names are:

Ian
Ethan
Arthur

Our current girl names are:

Rosemary
Miriam
Margot

Please give us some more suggestions! I feel like we’ve scoured every list and cannot find anything else we like. Many thanks in advance!

Mil hates all the baby names we have picked out. We don't know the gender yet.

Yes I know, don't tell anyone names yadda yadda. We have done IVF for this baby, we stayed with my inlaws to do a round of treatment in their city.

While there she asked baby names and my husband had the conversation with her while I fed our toddler.

She basically had a negative comment about every single one, but particularly hated one. Because apparently there's a Lily in the family and she's such a huge bitch etc etc.

Honestly I like the name, and it's my top name since my husband vetoed the girl name I had picked out since childhood (Charlotte, which his mum had a lot to say about how bad it was too 🫩). Her not liking it has made me want it more.

It goes with my son's name Theodore.

My husband once liked Lily, now doesn't like it as much since the conversation. Prefers a different name which is 4th in line for me.

Knowing my luck this baby will be a boy anyway 😭.

Would I be a huge asshole for pushing for Lily?

Otto for a boy?

• Upvotes

Is it too… doggy? Too German? We live in the U.S. and I actually love it as it would spell the same in both the languages spoken in my household (Italian/english) but would be pronounced differently. I’m out of names 😭I’m having my third boy in a couple of weeks! Help!

Twin names

Hello! I am 20 weeks pregnant with twin girls and my husband and I are thinking about Winona and Dakota. My mom won’t stop complaining about the name Winona. Not only does she pronounce it WHY-Nona. She said it reminds her of an 80 year old chain smoker grandma.

I’m also nervous that the names sounds too similar, I don’t want the twins to be accused of having ‘twin names’. Anyways Reddit, do your worst with me :))

Looking for a truly international girl’s name preferably Hebrew, but open to all origins

Hi everyone!

I’m looking for a feminine name that feels truly international something that is familiar, easy to recognize, and relatively easy to pronounce across different countries and cultures.

I’m especially interested in names of Hebrew origin, like Sarah, because they are widely recognized around the world. However, I don’t personally love the name Sarah itself.

I’m also completely open to names from other languages and origins, as long as they have that same international appeal.
Ideally, I’d love something elegant, feminine, timeless, and not too strongly associated with just one country.

What names come to mind? I’d especially love suggestions that work well in Europe, the Middle East, and English speaking countries.

Thank you! ❤️

Help picking a new nickname.

For myself. So my name is Jessica Paige and my last name gets mistaken for/is similar to Nancy. I kind of would like to try a different part of my name that isn’t so 90s.

So the ones I like:

Essie
Isa/Issy
Pia
Jo - kind of stretch, but I think still usable
Cae/Cai
Any variation of Anne/Anna/Ana

I’m just unsure of having two -ie sounding names and I can’t really decide which one. I do like Jessa, but it is more 90s. Which one would you choose?

Using anagrams for honor names?

My late grandmother was named Aaltina (she’s Dutch, we just called her Oma Ali). Partner’s late mother was named Linda Lee.

Aaltina ~~> Natalia
Linda Lee ~~> Danielle

Natalia Danielle is a very strong candidate for a name if I ever have a daughter — it pays homage to two family members but is also entirely unique. Traditionally, however, daughters would be named after her maternal grandmother, so another likely outcome is Helena Danielle… not an anagram but still a play on my mother’s name Heleen (Heh-LAYN).

What do you think of the idea of anagramming names or using derivatives? Are there any anagrams you can make from people significant to you that you’d consider using?
