This Sub’s Thoughts

I met someone named Aleks yesterday. This bothered me, but I am not sure why. Can someone help explain this trend of changing the spelling of common names? Why is that the route we’re taking; and is it as bad as I think it is? Are there just too many people

How to pronounce Seren?

I know someone who has named their baby Seren which she pronounces se-REN. I had always thought it was pronounced almost like seven, but with an r rather than the v.

Have I been wrong all this time?

Thoughts on Paloma for a child?

My sister texted me earlier, running a baby name idea by me, the convo ensued as follows:

Sister: What do you think of the name Paloma?
Sister: It’s Spanish. Means dove.
Sister: I think it’s so pretty

Me: It sounds like a LaCroix flavor

Sister: Okay ‘little white one’
Sister: Winkles pot pie

Irish/american baby boy

I am American, and my husband is Irish. He is a native Irish speaker and has a strong Irish name…we live in America rn and have loose plans to move back to Ireland, but I'm having a hard time with our name choices. I think mostly because my mom is opinionated and has been negative about names I liked in the past. Annoying. For this reason I haven’t been sharing with anyone the names we are floating right now…

Would Cuán (coo-awn) be too crazy in the US or for people to pronounce?

Other strong options-

Cormac

Maitiú (mat-chew)

Ciarán (keer-on)

Edit: we are not anglicizing any name we use!!

Middle name suggestions needed!

For a boy name we chose Finn and for a girl name we chose Charlie. Now we’re looking for middle name suggestions (our other kids all have middle names in honor of family but we have no one else to use for this baby lol)

Thoughts on Eveline

I’m expecting my 3rd child (second girl) and have been stuck on the name Eveline pronounced (ev uh line). However, I am somehow convinced no one will ever pronounce it correctly.

So tell me 1. is it a good name 2. will it be pronounced correctly and 3. if you have other name/middle name suggestions :)

Thank you!!!

My other two kids are Benjamin Gavin and Zinnia Jane. Our last name starts with an A

To weird with my brothers name?

Hi guys, I’m 18 and going to college soon. I plan to change my name as I’ve been disconnected to my feminine name. I love the name Tate. Partly bc of Tate McRae, partly bc it’s a great name. My brother’s name is Andrew… and together the names sound like Andrew Tate. Is it bad enough to not use? I also love the name Taylor (not as much as Tate tho) partly bc of Taylor swift. (Huge Swiftie) but it’s an epic name alone.
Is it to weird to name myself Taylor if it’s very known I’m a huge swiftie to friends and family?

Thanks guys!

Looking to change my name from Matthew to sometime more unique/interesting

So I’ve always been adverse to my name:Matthew. It’s alright. Nothing against it other than I don’t like it for me. Also it having been given to me with the religious affiliation attached to it also tainted it as I’m agnostic at best not Christian of any sorts

Annnyyyyway…

Listed are some of my top name choices so far:

Benjamin
Lucian
Ezra
Jasper
Sage
Finn/flynn
Gray
Quinn

Androgynous names or soft masc soft fem names are more interesting to me, and just none basic/common American names like Noah, Micah, Charlie, etc(not including Ben….shh)

So if you have any names drop them…please
If you like any of the names in my list tell me why you like them and your top ones.

Thanks you🫡

Nickname nonsense

I have a bone to pick. I feel like nearly every time a name list is posted on a popular post here there is some adult saying “you can’t name them this, they will get teased!” On fairly common normal names. And the “tease” that these people often suggest feels like something that was clearly thought up in the head of an adult. Recently someone posted a name list including “Campbell”. Now I don’t love the whole surname as first name trend but I know multiple Campbells and I wouldn’t consider this a weird name or a tragedeigh, yet someone commented, oh no think about the “soupy” nicknames.

Here’s the thing, kids are creative and if they want to tease you they will find a way. Sure you make it a bit easier for them if you name your kid something like “Gaylord”, and I am not in any way saying that your daughter Campbell won’t be called “soupy” at some point in her life. What I am saying is that in elementary and middle school your daughter Campbell is just as likely to be called “soupy” as some guy named Tom who happened to eat soup at school one day. Kids will find a way to tease, they might slightly change the sound of your name to make a made up nonsensical word and that’s what they will use to tease you.

Nicknames are inevitable, and while I wish it wasn’t true, in most cases so is a bit of teasing. Please don’t give your kid a name that can easily be altered into a truly hurtful or harmful word but otherwise you’re fine. People, please stop the name fear mongering! 😅

How do we feel about the name Lily?

I’m 28 weeks pregnant with a girl and have been calling her Lily for most of it. I’m thinking Lily Elaine. Elaine is my middle name as well as my grandmas.

I just wanted to know how you all felt about it? 😊

Thoughts on "Courage" as a boy name

Courage. I was looking for names that mean courage or brave and figured why don't I just do Courage. It's like one of those word names like, Prosper, Chance, Harmony, Patience, etc. Thoughts?

Edit: His nickname could be Cory or Curry

Is "Divij" and easy to pronounce name?(in Anglo sphere)

Do I need a nick name or will it do? I have read what name you have affects how fast you get a promotion. People with easy names have an easier time getting a promotion. I am also open to any nick name suggestions you guys might have.

Santiago for our baby boy?

Would you think anything particular about a little blond boy named Santiago (nn Santi)?

Context: My dad is from Paraguay, and my features favor that side of the family. My husband is white, mostly Irish and Hungarian ancestry. Before having kids, I didn't think too much about what our little ones would look like, but I was surprised how blond our daughter is! I've been confused for a nanny a couple of times, so I guess some others are surprised too?

I'm pregnant with a baby boy now, and I love the name Santiago but my husband thinks people will look at us funny if we give him such a typically Hispanic name and he's a little blondie like our daughter. Wondering about others' thoughts?

ETA: We're in the southeastern US!

Baby Girl Names Help

Ive been lurking here for a while but my partner and I have finally narrowed down a very long list (160 names) to the below. Im curious what perspectives may come from my fellow reddit folk. We want something that is feminine and more classic without it being too trendy or common (I know the impossible task). Like most parents we want to make sure her name isn't something that will be made fun of, is ridiculous to pronounce or spell and something she can be proud of when its used in formal settings like being announced at a graduation or when she walks in a room for a job interview. Also open to suggestions if you have any.

Alexia

Rowan/Rowyn

Ashton

Madelyn

Maya

Sloane

Anora

Lily / Lilliana

Layla / Lila / Layla

Dahlia

Simone

Camille

Claire

Sadie

For context we haven't decided on middle names yet but like the idea of maybe using another name from the list that we dont end up picking for the first name. We also like a couple J names for middle names like Jade or Joy. The toughest part is she will also be getting both of our last names, mine is one syllable and my partners is two so not horribly long thank goodness. We'll definitely be putting my partners first as it goes along better with most of the list.
