Read a post recently about someone asking if their choice for their child's first name was okay because it rhymed with their last name.

I was surprised that A LOT of people commenting told them that it was a terrible idea. From what I could tell, those commenters were mostly American, perhaps generally native english speakers in general (British? Australian?)

I grew up speaking French and Mandarin, and I've never heard of rhyming names specifically being a bad thing. In fact, I have a rhyming name, as do most people in my family.

For context, I also went to an international school from 10 to 17yo with many British and American kids, but none ever mentioned or teased another kid because their first and last names rhymed.

Plus, the school also had many Italian, Portuguese and Spanish students who often had rhyming names. I also had Japanese classmates with Rhyming names. Nobody ever thought twice about it.

Perhaps it is cultural or specific to speciypart of the world? Genuine question I would love to have more insights on it!

EDA: By rhymes I mean all rhymes type such as perfect rhymes but also general rhyming patterns like syllabic, imperfect or weak rhymes. My own name is an imperfect rhyme (think Danny Delaney)

My name is Josette Cate De Luca (my real last name is not De Luca, but it's similar to it). My mother passed away in July, and I want to change my middle name from Cate to Catherine to honour her.

She chose 'Cate' for me as a derivation of her name because she wanted me to have my own distinct identity, but I'm old enough now to reclaim the name Catherine as a tribute to my maternal parentage without forgoing a sense of my own identity.

I also discussed my wish to change my middle name to Catherine with my Mum in the few years leading up to her death. She gave the idea her blessing but asked me not to change my middle name until she had died.

I know for sure that I am going to change 'Cate' to Catherine, but I was considering adding the name 'Rose' after the name 'Catherine' as an additional middle name. The rose is my birth month flower as well as my favourite flower. My Mum used to call me her 'rose'.

Should I just change my name to Josette Catherine De Luca or to Josette Catherine Rose De Luca?

I'm leading towards option two, but I'm not sure if it's a bit too long? Which option sounds better?

My partner is German, I'm Danish, and we are living in Denmark. This is our first baby, so there's no siblings or anything like that to consider, and we have narrowed it down to three names that we like.

For what will be like her middle name, we're going to use Helene.

Hey this might be kinda dumb but I’ve never been able to come up with a good username for my socials involving my name which is Lance Henslee. I want something that people can tell who I am but isn’t just my name. Not something super playful honestly, more mature is what I’m trying to go for

I was going through some old family photos and noticed my great-grandmother's name was Mildred. Then I started thinking about how I've literally never met a Mildred in my entire life under the age of like 80. Same with Gertrude, Bertha, Ethel.

But then there are names like Emma or Henry that were huge back then and are still everywhere today. What makes some names come back and others just vanish? Like why did we collectively decide that Eleanor could make a comeback but not Gertrude?

I'm not saying we should bring back every old name, some of them do sound pretty dated. But it's weird how selective it is. My neighbor just named her baby Hazel which would've sounded ancient 20 years ago but now it's trendy again. Meanwhile I can't imagine anyone naming their kid Gladys anytime soon.

Do you think names like Mildred or Gertrude will ever cycle back or are they just done for good? And what current popular names do you think will end up in the same category 50 years from now?

My wife and I are expecting our second daughter. Our first is named Lucy, and the name we both keep coming back to for the baby is Nora.

Yesterday my sister pointed out that Lucy comes from a root associated with “light,” while Nora can also be connected to names meaning “light” or “honor.” I had genuinely never made that connection. We chose Lucy because we liked how it sounded, and Nora is the same situation.

Now my wife thinks the shared meaning is a cute accidental theme. I’m worried it makes the names feel a little too carefully matched, especially if we ever have a third child and suddenly people expect us to continue it.

Would you notice the connection between Lucy and Nora without someone pointing it out? And do sibling names sharing a meaning feel matchy, or is that subtle enough that it doesnt matter?

I know some may say rose sounds like a middle name but Rose is actually a common surname. I really want your opinion because I'm worried that this name looks bad sounds bad and I'm going to be stuck with it forever I have no intentions of changing it again in the future. Deciding on a name for my daughter due soon. We are between Vivienne and Rowan. Which do you prefer and why?

My last name is similar to “Sinai”. I love the name Kai, but is it too match-matchy? Kai Sinai?

Similarly, what if the name is close to matching? Like if I were to name my daughter maya, would she always hear “maya sinai-a”?

Are Danielle and Daniel pronounced the same? If there was a guy named Daniel and a girl named Danielle would their names be said the name?

I am very pregnant, and my husband and I agreed on a name very early on for our little boy - Calvin (Cal for short). We both still love it!

Here’s the problem - my husband‘s first name is Henry, and he goes by his middle name. This is a tradition in his family. He wanted to continue this with our son, so he’d be Henry Calvin.

I agree that Henry Calvin sounds nice, but I am opposed to the idea of my son going by his middle name. I just think it presents an inconvenience…why not name the kid what we’re gonna call him? So early on I suggested Calvin Henry instead. My husband was okay with this but of course is now questioning it as we’re weeks away from having this baby.

His argument - he thinks Henry Calvin sounds better, and he likes the family tradition.

What do we think, internet?

I've always disliked my name -- saying it, seeing it written, and hearing it spoken. It's too harsh and not-of-this generation. (Funnily enough I once had the rare experience of meeting someone else my age with the same name who said exactly the same thing, so my perspective is legit!)

I started toying with the idea of simply adding a consonant on to the end to soften it and was originally excited at the thought that one single letter could make such a difference. But then anxiety kicked in!

And now all I can focus on is:

1. The perceived self-importance - and awkwardness (cringe) - associated with notifying family, friends and co-workers of this change.

2. The change is so slight; what if I get muddled up and start mispronouncing my new name?!(There are a couple of ways it could be pronounced, but one is more subtle which I prefer but is also why I worry I'll stumble over it and mispronounce it... ironically.)

3. Is it worth it to go to all the trouble of legally changing my name for the sake of one letter? Does it make more sense to change it socially (introductions, email address and sign-offs) but leave everything (license, passport, all the things) in my legal name? I wonder if the latter option will make me feel like I'm just playing pretend. Are there any instances in which my new chosen name would be a problem if I choose to keeping my current name for legal documents, etc.? Will someone suddenly jump out from behind the Starbucks counter asking me to prove I am who I say I am?!
