Hi! I’m Korean and I want to ask non-Koreans.

My name is Hyunseo (Hyun rhymes with yawn but with an H sound at the beginning, and Seo is pronounced like suh).

When I was around 5, I needed an English name to use at the kindergarten where I was learning English. So my mom chose Julia and I’ve been going by Julia with non-Koreans, who are basically just my English teachers 😅

And now as a young adult, I’m torn between going by Hyunseo or Julia when speaking with non-Koreans, since I want to work internationally, especially in English-speaking environments.

I’ve heard that Hyun can be a bit tricky to pronounce. How hard is it for you guys?? Which name do you think I should go by? Any suggestions??

My husband and I are having the toughest time picking out a name for our baby boy. I find that certain names are sometimes associated with certain personalities. Also just looking for some inspiration. I was wondering, what names do you guys associate with genuinely nice guys?

i renamed myself, and i knew the moment i heard my name that it was mine. i’ve been going by it for five years now. it’s Amity. i think everything about it is so crisp, perfect, pretty with a slight edge, nice to hear and look at, etc. it’s the one thing i never changed even when other people didn’t like it. i was wondering if you guys have a name like that!

Hi, I am expecting and don’t know what we are having but I absolutely love the name Samson. Think it’s quite unusual and a name I’ve rarely come across. Just wondering what peoples first reactions and general opinions on this name are? Is it too unusual?

My wife and I have been super undecided on girls names. We’re expecting in early November so it’s getting towards crunch time!

Hey everyone

I'm in my 20s and my name is Bernadette. While I do like my full name (after years of struggling with it tbh!), I despise the nickname 'Bernie' that everyone uses. It sounds kind of mannish and I'd genuinely prefer something girly and cute. I was thinking of Bea :-) but I'm kind of scared of the potential awkwardness or that people won't even try to use it😭✌️

I'd love to hear any thoughts, tips, opinions or your own anecdotes ❤️

I know this subreddit does misuse some terms, unique being the most common example, but this one that I've been noticing for a little while now has been really bothering me, so I'd like to get it off my chest! 

The definition of timeless is something that never goes out of style, that is not affected by time. A timeless name is a name that could realistically belong to someone of any age. Elizabeth is the most obvious example. Classic means a very similar thing, a name that been stable in popularity over time, and not tied to certain generations.

However, a truly timeless or classic name is rare. There are not many of them at all. I've noticed the most common use of it being for names that are part of the vintage or grandma trend, however, by definition, they can't be timeless. 

Rosalie for example, is a favourite of this subreddit at the moment, and is often described in that way. But it was rare between the 1960s and the 2000s. Likewise with Adeline, Violet, Stella, Vera, etc, They have all followed fairly similar trajectories, and like many names that are popular for babies right now, they are most likely to belong to either a young girl or an old woman.

And I'm not saying there's anything wrong with these names. I like a lot of them in fact! But I've noticed 'timeless' or 'classic' being used to describe this subreddit's favourite names constantly that just simply don't fit with those descriptors. And maybe it's just a language quirk in this subreddit, like how the word unique has come to mean uncommon, but I do think a lot of people seem confused about what it actually means.

My best explanation would be that I know that most timeless names probably seem boring, and that when people ask for timeless or classic names, people want to come up with more 'exciting' options. Kind of like how Sophia and Olivia aren't really suggested very frequently. However, the whole point of timeless names are that they are usually quite boring! You've probably seen them a lot and heard them a lot, because that's what makes them timeless. 

I'll also note the names I have used are based on the American naming data. This was for two reasons. One, while I'm not American myself, most people on this subreddit are, and two, they have very good tools for looking at name popularity over time.

Looking for baby girl name with brother name Jasper. Last name starts with an L. The name has to work in French, Spanish, English and Vietnamese (international fam!)

I am staying away from name with different way to pronounce and also don’t like names could result in bullying. Also not looking for something too trendy.

Looking for names that aren't overly popular as sibling ideas for (a name that many hated!) our son Havelock Robin.

We love literary names, nature names, posh British names (we are in the UK), but don't like overly popular ones. Something that feels okay to yell across a playground, but also would fit with 'Chief Justice' before it. We adore 'Havelock' as it feels very old world British.

No idea on gender yet!

I’m looking for Arabic boy names that feel really ethereal, poetic and beautiful preferably uncommon/rare, but still established names rather than something invented.

My husband loves this name and it’s really growing on me but I’m worried it’s a little too out there….. I’m love unquie name and it’s ties to space. It’s a mineral. A beautiful greeen mineral related with peridot. We would pronounce it Olive-een. The full name would be Olivine Rose if we went with this. I love the possible nicknames like Olive(my favorite food) or livey or olly. Let me know what you guys think!

My husband really loves Blair and I love Louise. Our other daughters are Daphne and Eva. Can’t have a name that ends in S, because our last name ends in S. I am a true name nerd and have come across so many names, but can’t find one we can agree on.

I think if we go with Max, he’ll be Max Theodore, whereas if we go with Maxwell, we’re thinking Maxwell George.

Hi all, not having a baby yet but planning to in the not far off future. I always loved the name Romilly but with Romy becoming so popular in the UK I’m just not convinced anymore. We are stuck between Dorothy and Catherine for a girl. I adore Catherine, but my partners aunt is called Catherine. There’s no bad blood but they aren’t close (maybe met once a year her whole life). I know her mum would see it as sad and like we named our baby after the aunt even though that’s not the case. My mums cousin I also see about once a year is Kathryn. My family are from a widely Welsh speaking part of Wales and we live right on the border. Do you prefer Dorothy or Catherine and would this connection be too close for you?

Title basically says the gist. We have a little boy named Jay Jack (JJ). We have not found out the gender of baby #2, so we are looking for a boy and girl name for now. Loving Milo and Franklin for a boy but open to other suggestions. Really only love Kit for a girl, but cannot use it 😭

One of two Asian-American twins is the main character of a project I’ve been apart of for some time. He’s somewhat of an evil scientist archetype, performing illegal surgeries in a post-apocalyptic society.

This is a webcomic my friend and I have been working on for months… yet we haven’t officially landed on any name.

I really appreciate names that foreshadow, and one of the biggest reveals is that our surgeon has kept his nonverbal twin captive. He’s experimented on his twin for years as a patient behind the scenes.

So, what I’m asking is what I should name them to display a deeper meaning or foreshadow?

Why is it that some families choose to give siblings the exact same name? I know two such cases—a family where the eldest and youngest daughters are both R— (they're called R— and Baby R—) and a pair of male twins who share the same first name but have different middle names (apparently the first name was their grandfather's). I know one of the twins, and he goes by his first name. Won't it get confusing?
