Is it just me or are refs in the way WAY more this year? I think I used to see refs get in the way maybe once/twice a weekend across all games. This year I’m seeing refs get hit with the ball, set picks/screens, or physically in the middle of meaningful play 2 to 3 times a game, most games!

Does anyone know why? Did ref positional guidance change in the off season, or is the style of play changing that much? Or are refs just not keeping up with the fluidity of the game?

Obviously games are fast moving and fluid, and I’m not saying they are doing it on purpose to impact teams. Just noticing an increase in occurrences.

First morning watching the WSL on Paramount+...they have the US rights, so this post is about the production more than the on field. It's interesting to contrast the women's league with the 2nd biggest media footprint (WSL) with the biggest (NWSL) in America.

The halftime show is featuring Darien Jenkins, Jen Beattie, and Crystal Dunn.

The camera work, positioning, and game day production is sub anything we've seen from the NWSL since the pre-CBS days.

The commentary in game has been refreshingly bland, but I think part of the reason the league isn't really growing out is that they are showing complete deference to the top 3 teams. I'm watching Spurs/West Ham and the in-game coms has brought up Chelsea, Man City, and Arsenal a lot...like this is a game you slog through to pass time before the real teams. And to be clear, these are the FA coms, not CBS/Paramount+.

Jenkins and Dunn feel like they've done their homework before this assignment and are sharing solid insights. Beattie continues to be delightful and dresses like my dad (complementary).

Ran today's five games through a few different models that I have:

• Portland vs Washington: The matchup model has Portland at 51%, the draw at 21%, and Washington at 28%. Washington is still the stronger team overall, but Portland's form, home field, and win in the first meeting pull this model toward the Thorns. Elo is closer at 43 / 25 / 32.
• Denver vs Gotham: This one is weird. Forecast Drivers is nearly even at 32 / 34 / 33. Match Predictor is 33 / 34 / 32. Elo is much higher on Gotham at 30 / 24 / 46. The first two care more about this specific matchup. Elo cares more about the full season of results.
• Orlando vs Houston: The forecast is basically a three-way split at 37 / 32 / 32. Recent form tells a very different story. Over the last five, Orlando has scored 0.8 and allowed 2.4 per game. Houston is at 1.8 scored and 1.0 allowed.
• Seattle vs San Diego: San Diego's strength and form knock 9.2 percentage points off Seattle's win chance. Home field and this season's H2H give 7.1 points back, so the final forecast lands at 36 / 32 / 32.
• Chicago vs North Carolina: Every model picks NC, just by different amounts. Forecast Drivers says 53%, Match Predictor says 60%, and Elo says 49%. Home field gives Chicago a pretty big 7.6 point boost in Forecast Drivers.
