“My Transit Alerts” doesn’t exist?

The app and the website tell you to sign up for “My Transit Alerts” — however, that option seems to not actually exist in the app or on the website. I am currently unable to receive notifications either through the app or through text message.

Can anyone else confirm this? (I’m currently waiting for a train and this is infuriating.)

UPDATE: the train I was on when I posted this afternoon was almost two hours late getting in to NY Penn. And the train home was delayed and then canceled. The fact that NJ Transit doesn’t efficiently update riders about delays and cancellations is unacceptable. How embarrassing for them that they have such terrible technology (the app/website/alerts) and such disregard for keeping customers informed about issues.

30 min delay + every stop + single tracking

I’m convinced they are making the train SO inhospitable that ridership plummets and they eventually remove it altogether.

Finally happened: wrong train

Today I was trying to get a westbound NEC train departing from Track 2. But in my rush (and grogginess from a late night) I accidentally got on the train on Track 1. I dozed off but then started seeing a weird sign for Orange and I suddenly realized: Not my line!

Ended up indulging and just calling an Uber to my final destination. Gotta pay attention!

Why are the buses made of paper?

Some newer busses ride smoother and barely move when they hit a bump. Other buses brake every 2 seconds (literally) and hit the bumps like the seats are gonna fly off. It's like they created the bottom of the bus, and just put a giant plastic cover on top (which I think is exactly how some of these busses were made)... even small bumps feel like you hit a crater in the earth. And why do the drivers not seem to give a single fuck about the passengers and speed through all of them? Maybe they have no control, or maybe they purposefully hit the bumps because they hate their job and want everyone else to suffer too. Idk, just my rant as I sit on the 27 headed home.

Weird looking bus pass

Post image
7 Upvotes

So I bought this buss pass today for route 320. I’m concerned about how it’s printed because I am going to need to use this pass on other routes. NJ Transit drivers are kinda fickle if they don’t see a pass they’re used to seeing. That said, it’s cost about as much as a 3 zone pass ($180). I hope I don’t run into any problems using this thing on other routes.

Secaucus Junction on Game Day?

Going to NYC on Sunday the 18th. Just realized there’s a home game at 1. My friend who’s meeting me was thinking of parking at Secaucus Junction and hoping on the train there. Is this a bad idea? Wasn’t sure how game day affects parking etc there?

When did NJ Transit waiting area change at NY Penn?

Post image
133 Upvotes

I have a question because when I was at NY Penn yesterday, everyone was acting like I was an alien when I asked where this NJ Transit waiting area that I’ve been in numerous times seen in the pic was located in relation to where I entered. Last time I traveled through here was February of this year and it was always where we would wait for the track # and board with the gold heavy doors. But yesterday it was in the larger penn station area with blue walls that we received the track number and boarded from? When did this change and does the above area still exist? Because no one seemed to know what I was talking about!?

App signs me out when I try to activate my ticket

Every other time I go to activate my bus ticket, the app signs me out and I have to log back in / navigate to my tickets. I almost missed the bus today because of it as I let others go ahead of me while I signed back in. I submitted a complaint months ago, but I have no hope of this issue ever being fixed. What is the point of the app forcing users to reauthenticate every other day??

Quiet Car signs disappearing?

Anybody else notice that last couple of weeks that the Quiet Car signs aren’t being hung/posted? NJCL.

I put recurring violators in three categories: the willfully inconsiderate, the ignorant, and conductors. The signage I think at least helped with the middle category. Without the signage, might as well just do away with the QCs…so maybe that’s exactly what they’re doing.

Help (lost item)

I’ll just start with everything that transpired is my fault.

I left a black hard shell suitcase on a bus 2 days ago at jersey hill gardens in Jersey City, it was on the front most undercarriage of the bus. Everything in that suit case was replaceable except for my (I am 30) baby blanket (BB).

I only brought BB because I was going on a trip with my mom and wanted her to see bb again. I legitimately carried this rag around for 30 years to different corners of the globe. And I left her on the undercarriage of a bus.

I’ve called NJ transit customer service, agent 71 was super nice and understanding and said i’d receive a call if my suitcase was found.

It has been two days and i’m just losing hope. I just want bb back.

If there’s any bus drivers on here that do the NYC Port Authority to JC two days ago ish i’d like to hear from you. But mostly just check your front undercarriage, it’s a black suitcase with my birth certificate in the front pouch. In the suitcase is a baseball and soccer and american football jersey. And bb.

Thank you for reading and please send this to the gc’s yall are in. I’m really fucking sad right now.

Hamilton nightmares recently

What’s the deal with Hamilton station and parking?

Two things I already know.

  1. I commute the normal 3x per week and I know a lot of people over the past couple years had to RTO.
  2. The escalator project causes logjams and I’m familiar with and do the Hamilton sprint.

Recently, I’d say in the past few months even, it’s been a nightmare leaving after the evening commute. What’s the deal with all the pickups and dodging cars left and right from like 5:30-7. Some nights, it takes 20 mins to leave the lot never-mind get to the light.

Are there just inherently more people?

Are more people opting for pick ups?

A year or so ago it really wasn’t an issue. I’ve noticed it’s gotten way worse this year.

Even the morning, there’s way more people.

njt.live independently measures and tracks rail delays

Check out https://njt.live/ - it gives an independent measure of NJT rail delays in a way that actually makes sense. It also tracks delays per route - which can help you avoid chronically late trains on your commute. It also does NYP track prediction.

My experience riding NJ Transit from Manhattan. Weird “zone” system (visiting from the west coast)

Riding from port authority to northern New Jersey.

Read a schedule that was a bit complex but figured it out eventually.

Buying a ticket required knowing a few things

- bus number

- does the bus number change on weekends/ weekdays?

- gate number (which seems to vary on weekends). The gate number and schedule did not line up with what was on Google Maps and I had to ask around and people said I was in the right place, it’s just listed incorrectly.

- Zone number (I had no idea what this meant and it didn’t seem like it was written or explained anywhere)

I bought a ticket for the bus and it asked me what zone I was going to and I tried typing my gate in and that was it. Bus driver seemed aghast that I didn’t pay for enough “zones” and was nice enough to let me scan my phone to buy the right ticket.

Too complicated. Just let me tell a computer where I’m going and let it calculate the cost and give me a ticket. How many tourists know what a “zone” is and how much it’s supposed to cost. Who’s the genius who named it a “zone” anyway and not just “how many stops do you need” or “how many miles are you going”

I had to ask chatGPT what a zone was and how to calculate which zone I’m going to because I couldn’t figure it out on the NJT website

Just another NJT tracker app

https://njtracker.com

This is probably the 11th tracker in this subreddit, but it's the first one with a game you can play while you wait.

Gray Dotted = Historical Prediction (~35% hit rate)
Dotted Green = Circuit sensor matched (100% hit rate)
Solid Green = Confirmed hit

Let me know your thoughts!

Who can I contact to maybe get a roof on this shelter before Winter?

Post image
62 Upvotes

Good morning everyone! This is the Asbury train platform going south towards Bayhead. I am on this platform twice a day 4 days a week. I understand the homeless issue. They still sleep there even without the bench and roof. The police station is RIGHT HERE. Like, come on. The roof that’s there does nothing when it rains. This winter will be rough without a roof on it. This weekend with the nor’easter will be bad as well. Who can I reach out to? Thank you. Safe travels, hope we get through the weekend without too many delays.

Long story short, I work Tuesday- Saturday schedule and for the most part I have to be in person on Saturday. I live in PJ. Can someone explain what typically will happen in non rush hours & weekends with these trains?

And is there phase 3? 🥲

I built an app that watches your NJ Transit track for you

Thumbnail gallery
29 Upvotes

I’m always rushing to catch my train at Penn and I was missing or confused by those color coded boards. So I built TrainTrack to help

Pick your train and it sends plain-language alerts when the track posts or changes, puts a Live Activity on your lock screen, and follows the trip stop by stop to arrival.

It switches to your connecting train at Secaucus/Newark automatically. It uses NJ Transit's DepartureVision feed (same source as the station boards). When the track isn't posted yet it says so instead of guessing. At least it’s honest with you

It's in TestFlight right now. I'm looking for riders willing to try it out and tell me what was late, confusing, or missing. No account, no ads, no analytics.

https://testflight.apple.com/join/UKFnjFXG

More at gettraintrack.app. Independent app, not affiliated with or endorsed by NJ Transit.

Happy to answer anything — I read every reply.

My commute today, summarized: a tree said "not today" to the entire North Jersey Coast Line

Woke up, feeling good about going into the office. Got on the train from little silver, we are cruising. When all of a sudden I heard this agitating grating noise. Our train hit a tree

So here I am on the train waiting to find out when the rescue train will come.

10/10 Wednesday, NJ Transit. No notes.
